OFFICIAL COUNTY. PAPER
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 15. 1903.
DEVELOPING ARIZONA.
Ey -wonderlully rapid stages
the southwest is being developed,
particularly in the reclamation
of deserts, acd a correspondent
writes thus from Tucson regard
ing work in this line in our
neighboring territory :
A number of communities in
southern Arizona are following
the lead of Phoenix and are
seeking assistance from the na
tional government for the de
velopment of . water-storage
plants and the irrigation of the
great arid areas of the south
west. Florence has organized
on Phoenix lines, for the irriga
tion of the Casa Grande valley,
by means of a dam which it is
hoped the government will build
jon the Gila river, near San Car
los. Another organization is
being formed by the farmers of
the San Pedro valley, who hope
for the construction of a storage
dam above Fairbank. The boards
.of supervisors of Pima and Santa
Cruz counties- have swung into
line and have adopted resolu
tions telling that there are many
logical sites in Santa Cruz and
Pima counties "for dams, reser
voirs and water catchments for
impounding water and where
submerged dams can be con
structed at a minimum cost and
which will provide water suf
.. ficent to reclaim euough of pub
lic lands, the jjroceeds from the
' sale of which will be ample to
reimburse the government for
the construction of such dam."
It is also averred that these
small dams can be constructed
at much less cost and risk than
the system of dams now con
templated and the proceeds from
the sale of the land can be much
sooner realized. On the basis
of these resolutions it is pro
posed to get together some tan
gible schemes which can be sub
mitted to the hydrographic
bureau. The Tucson Chamber
of Commerce has already had
irrigation questions under con
sideration and has passed reso
lutions asking the government
to build the dam on the Gila
river at San Carlos, for the bene
fit of the Pima Indians, rather
than the one on Salt river,
which would benefit only Phoe
nix and the whites.
"A syndicate of San Francisco
capitalists have purchased the
itocKiana canal in luraa couniv.
The heading is twenty miles
above Yuma on the Colorado
fceven mues or tne cutcn are
already completed and it is pro-
posed to extend the canal into
Sonora, Mex. An immense area
is to be irrigated, particularly
"below Yuma. The main difficulty
is the crossing of the Gila,
which is proposed to accomplish
'by nreans of a. syphon. The
new company has also, pur
chased the Rawling pumpin
"plant at Yuma, principally used
in the development of the fruit
growing section of Yuma
Heights. Imperial Press.
fc JUDGE GEQ. R. DAVIS.
luma, lor rue nrst time m
years, has experienced the nov
elty of a real term of court. It
was not a lick and a promise of
two or three days and then an
adjournment for six months, but
a real eight-days' session with
number of night sessions thrown
in. The conscientious determin
ation of Judge Davis to clear the
docket has created a very favor
able impression on the people of
Yuma.
While here Judge Davis made
many friends iu as well as out of
court. His quiet and gentle
manly demeanor and his clear
interpretations of law won com
mendations from both bar and
litigants. He takes with him a
very favorable impression of
Yuma and its people. On his
return here in December Mrs.
Davis kwill, in all probability,
accompany him.
The notorious Mr. Rathbone
and some of his friends among
the democratic editors have con
strued the silver service pre
sented to General Leonard Wood
by the fashionable tennis club of
Havana, as a bribe present by a
gamblers-association.

A man says. "Look at this." And he
over-laps his coat to show how loose it
is. There are some people who can lose
fat to advantage, but the loss of flesh is
one of the accepted evidences of tailing
health. As flesh-making processes begin
in the stomach, so
naturally when
there is loss of
flesh we look first
to the stomach for
the cause. And
the cause is gen

disease of the

Danger of Colds and Grip.
The greatest danger from
colds and grip is their resulting
in pneumonia. If reasonable
care is used, however, and Cham
Iain's Cough Remedy taken, all
danger will be avoided. Among
the tens of thousands who have
used this remedy for these dis
eases we have yet to learn of i
smsrie case navmg resulted m
pneumonia, which shows conclu
sively that it is a certain pre
ventive of that dangerous dis
ease, it win cure a cola or an
attack of the grip in less time
than any other treatment. It is

COLORADO
DELTA
CANAL COMPANY
From tlicSan Francisco Bureau.
A company, organized in San
Francisco, was recently incor
poratea under tne above name
in the State of New Jersey. The
capital stock is 2,200,000. Ar
ticies are about to be filed, in
this state. H. W. Postlethwaite
of San Francisco is president
and G. L. Bennett secretary of
the company; Archibald Bar
nard, attorney; J. M. Howells,
chief engineer, and J. D. Schuy
ler, consulting engineer. The
local office is at room 604 Hay-
ward building. The principal
omect of the incorporation is to
construction of a large gravity
canal system for the purpose of
irrigating about 150,000 acres of
land in Yuma county, Arizona.
The main canal will be about
200 feet in width and 8 feet in
depth for the greater part of its
45 miles of length in Yuma
county. Water will be diverted
from- the Colorado river at Co
copah Point. 174- miles above
Yuma, and the canal will extend
in a general southwesterly di
rection to the Mexican Inter
national boundary line, the total
fall in the grade from the point
of intake amounting to 75 feet.
The line of the route parallels
the river and passes through the
town of Yuma, Ariz.
The scheme includes provision
for extending the canal into
Mexico when required. In the
United States the greater part
of the laud to be irrigated is al
ready settled upon, and is more
or less under cultivation, mere
is, nowever, a large tract or
mesa land a part of which is,
nowever, a large tract ox mesa
land a part of which is still un
surveyed, capable of producing
all kinds of fruits.
The water will.be dropped at

four points on the canal, and
the power thereby obtained used
to raise water, about 00 feet to
the top of the mesa. The total
head of water thus utilized will
be 48 feet, varying from 10 to 15
feet at the four different power
sites within 12 miles of Yuma.
With the large volume of water
available an additional supply of
electricity for light and power
can be furnished in Ynma.
Before commencing construe1
tion the company will obtain
contracts from the owners of the
land to be served by the canal
with the understanding that at
the expiration of ten years the
canal is to become the property
of the land-owners using the
water.
The existing owners of the
undertaking reserve the right to
run the canal for the first ten
years, taking their profits din
ing that period from its con
strution and operation. The
farmers will own the distribut
ing canals from the start. A
railroad is being promoted by
some heavy capitalists from
Yuma to the Gulf, a distance of
about 60 miles, and negotiations
have been commenced to secure
electric power for its operation
from the Colorado Delta com
pany.
TI13 Gila will be crossed Ly an
elevated flume. The Colorado
Delta Company has acquired the
rights and property of the
Rockland Canal and Improve
ment company, a Yuma corpor
ation, organized to supply water
to a portion of the lands that
will be served by the new canal.
