Gentlemen Our baby when
about two weeks old was attacked
with a scroEulous affliction that for
a time destroyed her eyesight en
tirely and caused us to despair of
her life She was treated by the
best physicians without benefit
We finally gave her Swifts Spe
cific which soon relieved her com
pletely and she is now as hale and
hearty a child of three years as
can be found anywhero

A Key West fisherman has cap
tured a turtle weighing 1600
pounds the largest ever seen The
old fellow was broad enough on
the back for six men to stand on
him and he could have floated
off with a ton of coal
A striking instance of the benefit
of discipline occurred the other
day in Cincinnati Ohio A school
building containing seven hundred
boys and girls took fire and the
children were marched out without
any confusion or the least accident
by one stairway while the firemen
were ascending by another The
teachers have a firealam drill for
such emergencies and tho teacher
who first discovered tho fire gave
tho alarm in tho prescribed way
and at once the teachers in all the
rooms of the three stories mar
shaled their pupils and marched
them out with the precision of
veterans

Wben tbo wild winter winds did blow
The bitter winds of January
Tbat swept with sparkling swirls of snow
The wastes of western prairie
A little child camo to luy arm
To bring me joy cr sorrow may be
And o beset with vague alarms

Another little waft to tend
Another little belpicsi stranger
To lead to feed to fold to bend
From every wrong and danger
To malec ono anxions mako ons sad
And fearful for each morrow may lie
With heart half sorrowful half glad
I mourned Another baby
And then I thought how nearhowdear
Tbo little children God had 6ent lis
How full they made our home of cheer
And bow theirrresenccdid content us
Hard if but line were laid away
This year or next as might or may be
Our hearts would ache would burn would
break
Aud now another baby
Ah so I thought and so I said
In ecstacy of peace and pleasure
As bending down I kissed ho head
Of my last weest weaken treasure
O dear child of my life and love

A Curious Statement
The report of the Commissioner
of Agriculture contains one curious
statement and coming from as
careful and efficient an officer as
Col Colman has been is all the
more curious Iu connection with
a refererence to the extensive
adulteration of food products the
commissioner says that generally
they are of a character that is
harmless to health We believe
that some time ago the depart
ment issued a bulletin detailing
the articles adulterated and if we
are not mistaken there were named
isjiot healthful nor are the adeftr
terating ingredients in candy or
flour In a word we do not be
liove that the average adulteration
is harmless by any means But if
it was it is a rank fraud upon the
publis and upon nono is it n great
er fraud than the class than the
Department of Agriculture repre
sents Henco harmless or hurtful
the government of the United
States has no business to speak of
the despicable business in the
slightest way apologetic Every
decent man ought to assume as he
has the right to assume that these
adulterated foods are harmful to
to the health and ho should de
nounce the business of their manu
facture as tho meanest and most
conscienceless swindle that has
evor been perpetrated It is such
indirect apologies as the statement
in tho report of the Agricultural
Department though probably not
intended and such open defiant
impudent chnmpionship of adul
terations as the Board of Agricul
ture of the state of Illinois has
assumed in its attitude toward
bogus butter that hurts the honest
producer and the cause of decency
more than almost anything else
that could bo done Exchange

put it to his ear in order to hear
the sound of the voice that spoke
to the reader The savages of
west Australia used to be greatly
puzzled by the speaking papers
as they called books and letters
They could not understand how a
person receiving a letter announc
ing the sending of a number of
sheep was able to detect by it that
ono was missing Some Cochin
China bannols were in like man
ner astonished at finding that a
demand for payment for carrying
a letter was defeated by tho letter
itself the writer having announced
the payment of the fee A Cali
fornia Indian having by a letter
been detected in the theft of one of

that it should not see him eat the
bread and be able to tell of the
theft
