i The list ot subterranean rivers of im
portance is being constantly added to
xai what used to be n very limited list
jl jnow become quite an extended one
Ii s only a few days ago that the dis
i is gave an account of the discovery
of one of these streams in one of the East
ern States and its exploration for miles
jn a canoo by the two adventurous dis
covers According to the published ac
counts this stream is even more remarka
ble than that found in the JIammoth Cave
in Kentucky This latter flows a distance
of 300 feet beneath the earths surface
between banks about thirty feet apart
nnd is a volume of water forty feet deep
Rolling on for about a quarter of mile it
disappears in a bank of fino sand veiled
n both its coming and its going as the

rather less written of is the river tys
which on its entrance into Belgium
dashes abruptly over a precipice and is
lost to sight for nearly half a mile The
Jleuso also has a subterranean course ex
tending to a distance of six miles while

of Soucy from which it never reappears
except in the form of new springs which
are supposed to arise from the lost waters
In Derbyshire England there are two
small streams called the Ilamp and the
Manifold Formed by the union ot sev
eral small springs they flow in the open
for a short distance and then turn in close
together under the face of a hill range
Here they have made for themselves a
passage through the solid earth and for
miles they flow underground each main
taining its own completo individuality
until atjength they reemerge to the light
by apertures only fifteen yards apart
That their waters never intermingle is
proved by this experiment that any
floating body thrown in where the rivers
enter tho underground passage again re
ippcars in the separata river into which
It has been thrown when the strange
itreams of water issue into the light of
day
A somewhat similar condition of affairs
b said to exist about a little Cornish lake
called Dozmere or Dosmary pool sup
posed to be that mere into which the good

neither visible outlet nor inlet but it is
laid that articles thrown into the lake will
reappear in Fslmouth harbor which is at
east sixty miles away

and the river instead of disappearing be
fore it reaches the sea comes from the sea

This is by no means the only seafed
river it appears for very soon after the
publication of the above statement it
was followed by another from a New
York gentleman who said that tuch
were common in Mexico where they
were known as zanates While
passing through Yucatan in 1870 he
writes I saw large river running
with torrential speed within a natural
tunnel not far from the seashore and
probably not over one hundred feet below
the surface of the ocean Its shaftlike
entrance was adorned by a picturesque
old Spanish wellcurb of stone fur
uished with standards of fancifully
wrought ironwork Nothing on the
surface indicated the existence of the
vast cavern under the monotonous and
flat lowlands of the peninsula of
Yucatan and though not a breath
of air stirred the deafening roar
of the torrent under our feet
could not bo perceived until we were
fully inside the cavern A rapid de
scent brought us to the level of the
pumps used for irrigating a very ex
tensivo ixtl plantation and from here
we could see by the light of our torches
the yellow foam of the waters upon
the undefined background of the chasm
below Descending still further the
full stream could be seen through a
wide fissure in the limestone of the
cave It had the rounded appearance
of a stream flowing horizontally under
great pressure ten or twelve feet in di
tmeter and looking like a gigantic black
Icicle lying on its side The largo vol
ume of water plunged with great swift
ness into an unexplored and dark cham
ber with a terrific roar producing noises
which resembled the hollow echoes
of heavy explosions heard now
and then above tho perpetual rumbling
of the rushing water The mouth or
entrance of the zanate was only twenty
eight feet above the level of the Gulf of
Mexico and as my barometer indicated
a descent of HO feet it meant that tho
river was flowing 112 feet below the
level of the sea The manager of the
plantation near which was found the sub
terranean stream informed the writer
that there were many other such zanatcs
along the coast and that they were
looked upon by the natives with almost
> iuperstitious reverence and spoken of as
great miracles which have always been a3

The phenomenon of a stream flowing
merrily down from a mountain and then
disappearing is in the West a very com
mon one says a writer in an early num
ber of Science In following down the
Rio Grande on an enlarged map we find
many streams entering into it in its upper
course In going down a little farther
reaching the San Luis Valley they are
found to suddenly give out on the north
ern side and a few miles farther down
on tho southern side also The princi
pal streams of the valley the Rio
Grande excepted come in full force
down the mountain flow freely on and
terminate in u marsh or a small lake on
the sand The beds of those which
should empty into the Rio Grande are
there but there is no water in them
Similar streams are common all over the
southwest and the various streams show
all the different stagus from those which
really go somewhere all tho tune and
those which alive and fall of water
above always fail to reach the stream to
which they are headed below
There is one remarkable case in New
Mexico where the lost tributaries are
plentiful but the main stream does not
V istatall This is in a valley which
siflfcetween the Rio Grande and the Pe
cosilivers The valley beginsnear the
Sandia Mountains and is shut in by
broken mountain ranges It is a well
defined valley not very broad but Hav
ing a length of perhaps 300 miles
Flowing into it especially on the western
side near the upper end and on the east
Xcrn toward the lower are numerous lost
tributaries while the primary stream has
so completely disappeared that itsTery

People Who Worship the Bear
In the north island of Japan and in
some parts of the extreme northwest of
Asia there lives an interesting raco of
people called Amos Where they came
from nobody seems to know for in many
respects they are not at alllike the
Japanese and Chinese
The men are well built but rather
undersized and their bodies are covered
more or less thickly with hair They
wear long beards and the hair of their
head is also long and bushy The women
are not so welllooking as they have to
do all the hard work of the tribe
The folk are not gifted with much in
tclligence and they worship natural ob
jects and animals the bear being specially
selected for this purpose They spend
their time in fishing and hunting It is
hard to tell what is the number of the
Ainos But as they arc not supposed to
number more than 50000 at the very
most it is likely that they will sooner or
later become extinct

thinks baptism may counteract the con
juring and cure its affliction as she re

considerable time on sounding operations
in the South Pacific state that she has
just completed a survey of the Union
group of islands and a line of soundings
has been carried from those islands to
Fiji andtheuce to Tonga for the pur
pose of cablelaying shoulda cabtoat

sary On the 1st of October the Egeria left
Tonga for the Falcon Island one of the
Tonga group which was thrown up five
years ago by a volcanic eruption and was
then stated to be five miles long by three
wide but to the surprise of the scien
tific officers on board they now found it
to be only about half its original size
The place proved to bo composed en
tirely of volcanic cinders with small
hot sulphurous springs here and there
and in some places the ground was so
hot as to render walking exceedingly un
comfortable and in other places actually
dangerous
Lieutenant Marescaux and a party of

placed a mark on the highest point of
land on the island about 250 feet from
the level of the sea and about twenty

trade She is now working at her lathe

better iob or in less time than the fair

when Miss Nellie began to think of the
means whereby she must earn her living
she looked over the whole field of womans
work Among the trades or occupations
which the pushing women of this country
had made their own there was none she
especially liked She was a bright girl
with a great deal of Yankee cleverness

ness The remark was made by a friend
that she was so fond of inventions she

Milk Toast Toast a goodly number
of slices and arrange in a deep dip
Put into a saucepan one quart of sweet
milk and stir into it ttto tablcspoonfuls

with a lijtle milk Stir constantly till it
boils cook a moment or two add a little
salt and small piece of butter and pour
over the toasted bread
Potato Yeast Grate four goodsized
uncooked potatoes into a quart of hot
water stir over the fire and cook slowly
for five minutes Turn into a jar add a
halfcup of sugar and a tablespoonful of
salt and when lukewarm add a halfcup
of good yeast Allow this to ferment for
sis or seven hours stirring it down as it
comes to the top of the jar Keep in a
cold place well covered
Beef Rissoles Chop fine some cold
roast beef season it well with salt and
pepper and to each halfpint of this add
a tablespoonfnl of chopped parsley and a
halfcup of bread crumbs then add two
whole eggs and work the mixture to a
smooth paste Form into round balls
dip in egg and then in bread crumbs and
fry in smoking hot fat Serve with a
nice brown sauce pouted around them

light bread dough into small balls the
