Those who have eounselnd in the moasures so ruinous lo our great interests, stand ! condemned, like those who have, in oflicial conduct, assailed tho purity of elections. Tho limited commercial intelligence and shott sight ed views of the ncgotistor of the Mclean Treaty wiili England, have gone far to injure our commerce, and sacrificed much of our carrying trade j whilo Mr. Ste venson, our present minister, embracing ip his views only tho Slave and Tobacco interests, has sought no redress nr alleviation to the consequent disasters of that ill-fated treaty. Ilcforo 1630, when the treaty came into ojieration, the American tonnage to Hritish Colonial ports was nine times as much as the Hritish tonnage cleared from America to the samo ports. Hut since tho treaty, the Hritish tonnage is greater than the American to the samo ports. Our trade to tho Hritish Colonics thus diminished, is however loss injured than tho commerce to other coun tries. In 1630, when the treaty look ciTect, tho Amer ican tonnigo to foreign ports was 071,800 tons, and nearly eleven times as much as tho Hritish tonnage cleared from American ports, which was then only 69,800 tons. It was in 1839, 101,500 Ions, which shows a rate of increase, under the treaty, of four hundred and forty-seven per cent. The more effectually to injuro tho fisheries and sup plant the carrying trade, American vessels aro not nl lowed, by tho treaty with England, logo from one col ony to another, and can only make a direct voyage from tho United States to one of her colonics; and there thoy aro countervailed by enormous and dispro portionate duties on produce brought in American ves sels. In many of tho West India Islands a bounty is given on tho importation of fish in tho vessels of tho homo country, greater than tho value of tho article, American shippers, if allowed to enter tho port, would gladly contract to deliver any quantity ofliko fish at tho line of tho bounty. Oilier nations ato thus skil fully taking caro of their interests, and cherishing their I fisheries ami shipping. Hut tho Van lluren administra I tion was so busy in squabbling to Keep up ' The Par ty,' that it could not and did not attend to such small matters as the agriculture and commerce of the coun try. Its ministers and agents were party hacks, so lcctod for paity purposes, and altogether incompetent for the high duties expected to bo performed, and there fore tho pcoplo willed an entire change of administra tion. France. A treaty has been negotiated with 7-Vancc, and with much boasting it has adjusted tho claims and obtained indemnity for former spoliations on our com merce. Hut mark tho fraud, and tho manner in which our government agreed to be cheated. Tho duties on the importation of French productions, aro to bo so re mitted on her wines, silks, trinkets, &c. &c. that we have given two dollars to France in remission of du ties upon the luxuries imported, for every dollar she had agreed to pay us, for spoliations; and our incum bent minister, fresh from the Van lluren cabinet, has been content for years past with his salary and such a state of commerce. Tho Corn Laws of England and Franco havo gone far to injure our commerce ; have rejected all rccipro city in trade; havo prostrated tho great agricultural ntcrests of this country, and have been permitted to ursue their course ol depression and destruction with out any adequate efforts of resistance, or self-defence, on tho part of our administration, or any voluntary hin- ranccs from cither of tho diplomatic agents repre senting those great interests which they seem not to lavo understood. The returns of the cccsus show an amount of pro duction in tho United Stales of seventy-tlneo millions bushels of wheat, and with tho capacity of an increased and unlimited production. It has been left to decay on tho farmer's hands without any efforts to provide for it a foreign market, while a particular mission was created to find a continental market, for tobacco alone. To encourago domestic production, a duty of Jive cents was laid on imported sugars, and to aid commerce a drawback of five cents was allowed on exportation. In the zeal to break up any protection to domestic la bor, the duty on foreign sugar has been reduced to two and one half cents, while the drawback on re-ex portation is continued at five cents. Vessels loaded with sugar, bound to foreign ports, touch at American ports to get this difference of two and one half cents, on tho drawback. Such is the present course of trade, and it is woll suited to tho late administration. It permitted commerce to drawback double the sums paid in as duties: and allowed Swarlicout, Jloyt - Co. Ac. fcc. to draw out any residue. No wonder wo havo a deficient Troasury ! !! Even Diddle might have been trusted with such a balance sheet as safely as Wood bury. It is the boast of England that the steam power used in her works is equal to the labor of forty millions of men. Tho returns to the census show that our farmers have nineten millions of sheep, and about thirty mill ions pounds of wool. Tho wheat and wool, if ihey had any market would pay all ballanccs on importa lions, and leavo us out of debt and prosperous. Hut no inattci for tho farmers ! ! The a bility of Eastern vessels to touch at a home port, and take out new papers, rendered the whole business po culiarly unjust and oppressive to the commcrco from New York. Hut we have no time to go the rounds of our diplo malic corps to-day, nor space to say more, than that the Whig administration must look over this whole business, nnd come to the rescue of our agriculture commerce, and country, from tho miserable men and grovelling measures of tho Van Uuren administration This department has not been as corrupl and rapacious as the Custum House, but infused as it is, with the narrow views of the late administration, and from in capacity and neglect, it has more injuriously aflocted all the essential interests of the country. MELANCHOLY SHIPWRECK One Hundred and Forty Lives Lost, It again becomes our painful duty to record a ca lamity involving destruction of human life to an awful extent. Four of tho crew and four of the passengers of (he brig minstrel, Capt. The Minstrel left Limerick, Ireland, on the 21st. of April for Quebec, with one hundred and furty-ono pas sengers, emigrants. Tho vessel had a tolerable pas. sago up to April last, at 4 o'clock in the rnoriiing, when sho struck on the Red Island Reef. There was a heavy sea running at tho lime, hut the boats wcra launched and made fast to tho fore-chains. Upwards of one hundred passengers were embaiked in tlitf boats but their doom was quickly sealed; the vessel 'heeled off into deep water and went down stcril foremost, so suddenly that the painters of tho boats could not be cast off, and the people who had embarked in the boats purished with their equally unfortunate companions on board the ship, except four uf the crew and four pas sengers, who alone of upwards of one hundred and fif ty souU remained lo tell the sad tale.
