FRIDAY AUGUST 29, 1S73. H0ME2IEWS. The new church at Pendleton is to be built immediately. There are fivo districts in Ronton county that have no schools. The principal of the Pendleton school receives an annual salary of $1,000. Seventy thousand pounds of wool have ben shipped from the Eugene uepot uus season. usou's u rutin i'anslau Circus to night and to-morrow evening. Also, a maiinee to-morrow afternoon. J. o. v nson, lias accepted a position as one of the teachers in The Dalles public L. C. "Walker, of Forest Grove, has been selected by the School Directors as the Principal of the- public school of The Dalles. The new school house at the Eastport coal bank is nearly completed and will be opened for educational purposes early in the ensuing month. The funeral of our old friend Henry Bird, who was buried last week from Ij. residence in this city, was largely attended. The funeral sermon, by Mr. Roberts, was a fitting eulogy upon the life of the deceased and a feeling exhor tation to the largo family of sons and daughters to emulate his virtues. His estimable wife has our deepest sympa thy in her aftlictiou. Attention is called to the "Statement of Dr. Champlain" in our advertising columns. To fully appreciate the rem edy the dyspeptic suflerer has merely to understand that its component parts are composed simply of condensed smoke, chemically prepared. The editor of this paper was suffering acutely some two months since with dyspepsia, and being induced to try this remedy was astonished at its efilcacy. Its action seems to be to heal the diseased mem branes of the stomach after the manner 01 -curing" meats. Tins explanation may not be scientific but it is compre hensible. EEPLT TO'kR. WILEY. Portland, Aug. 27, 1S73. Joteph Wiley, Ej., Captain Emmet GuardSir:1 am pleased to see the spirit manifested in your letter to the New Northwest of last week in rela tion to cruelty practiced upon a China man on the day of the fire. I do not know the name of the Guard who did the deed. It was witnessed by the editor-in-chief of the OregonUtH, Mr. J. Taylor, myself and many others. I, myself, bound up the Chinaman's feet, which were horribly charred, and the poor fel low's agony was simply awful. It was not my intention to cast a reflection upon the Emmet Guards as a body. I judged the offender to be an Emmet by his uniform, which was grey, orna mented with green.
