FRIDAY- JUNE1, 1877.
HOMENEWS.
Members of Portland Lodge, T. O. G.
T., are talking up a moonlight excur
sion. Strawberries are plentiful in the mar
ket. Cherries have also put in a timid
' appearance.
Showery weather caused the postpone
ment of the picnics advertised to come
off last week.
The first strawberry festival of the
season was held at the Unitarian Church
on Tuesday evening.
We are pleased to note the return to
this city by the "Chester" of M. F. Mul
key, Esq., who has been absent in the
East for some weeks.
The Howe Sewing Machine Company
have removed their office to their large
store-room in Beck's building, on Sec
ond street. Remember the Howe is the
ploueer of all.
Dr. E. A. Jones, lately of Southern
Oregon, has established himself in this
city, and entered upon the practice of
his profession. He is a skillful surgeon
as well as a scientific and practical phy
sician. Six prisoners confined In the county
jail very "nearly effected their escape by
tiling away at their bolts and bars. The
plot was discovered on Sunday, and the
men removed to closer and more secure
quarters.
Any dairyman, farmer, or farmer's
wife who desires to purchuse a "Granger
Churn" will do well to call at this office
or communicate with us bv letter.
Fresh butter at ruling prices will be
laKen in payment.
A reception will be given Mrs. Emma
Jiellogg by the members of Multnomah
Lodge, 1. O. ti. T.. at their hall on Sat
urday evening. The lady expects soon
to depart ror tne Jast to remain lor an
inuennite length of time.
Lone Fir Cemetery, which has hereto
fore presented such a neglected appear
ance, has, of late, been carefully and
tastefully improved. The subscription
of $300 bestowed by our citizens for that
purpose has been judiciously and lmpar
tially expended.
Dr. P. D. Bunnell, whose card appears
elsewhere, comes to thiscity well recom
mended, having achieved much success
in tne treatmentot those diseases which
he claims as a specialty. He is prepared
to prove to the satisfaction of anv pa
tient so afflicted, the assertion made at
tne conclusion or his advertisement.
A runaway which resulted in the seri
ous injury of a man named Crummie
aud his little son occurred a few days
since on Fourth street. The boy had
leg broken and the father was dragged
for some distance, sustaining severe
bruises. The family resides on First
anu Mill streets, and are in destitute
circumstances.
We call special attention to the ad
vertisement of Dr. Warner's Health

DAVID AND ANNA MATSO.
By Mrs. -AJbigail Scott Diiniv:v',
Editor "New Northwest," Portland, Oregon,
WITH BEAUTIFUL ILLUSTRATIONS, AND ELEGANTLY BOUND.
A new epic, from a vigorous and skillful pen, on a subject which occupies a large place in the
social discussions of the day. The subject is taken Irom Mr. Whittier's short narrative or "Da
vid Matson," with which the reader is probably familiar. David Matson, a Merrimac sailor,
was captured by the Algerlnes (during one of his voyages) and sold Into slavery. After many
years he obtained release and was on his way to the home of his boyhood, when he fell In with
his old employer, who Informed him that his wife, believing him dead, had remarried, and,
stunned by his trouble, he surrendered all claim as husband and rather to the man who had
stepped into his place, and departed. Mrs. Dunlway has found a theme In this story with
which her heart beats in warmest sympathy, and her lines flow on In the smooth cadence in
dicative or the fullest accord. She pictures the gentle, tender, trustful Anna and the wily, cov
etous Pelatiah in vivid colors; and how years of poverty and longing, and the cries of the nun
gry boys, compelled poor Anna to yield to Pelatlah's Importunity,
"Rise, rejoice,
My poor, unmated dove," said he,
" And look henceforth for love to me."
A little rurther on he says:
" Become my wire and you shall be
Made happy through prosperity,"
While, if she persists in declining his advances, wolf-like, he threatens to abandon her to star
vation and cold. And this Pelatiah was a "deacon,"
" In exhortations deep and Iond."
The wanderings of David, his captivity, release, hapless Interview with Pelatiah, discovery ot
Anna's second wifehood, and his sad going back to Algeria, are all told so pathetically that our
leelings at e deeply enlisted. No one, with any true sentiment, can read the poem without be
ing thoroughly stirred. The illustrations are in admirable keeping with the passages they are
designed to portray, and a line engraving or tho author is a fitting frontispiece. The subject
spirit, fire and passion of the poem should give It an extensive reading, aside from the Interest
which the literary reputation of the author must awaken In it. As a specimen of book-making
the volume is certainly beautiful, and would adorn any center-table.
We know of no work so well adapted as a present. It Is printed on heavy tinted paper
and most beautifully bound, piice, $2 00 ; full gilt extra, S2 50. For sale by book-sellers, or
by mall, post-paid, by
