IS; The ice gorge in the river below this city gave away this altcrnoon. The ice swept past this city with tremendous power, sinic ing or seriously damaging a dozen steamers and a nutnl cr of barges, involving a loss of absut 300,000. New Yobe, Dec. 19. A St Louis despatch siys the scene of the ice disaster on the river yc.-terday was a nioi-t exciting one. The levee wis a perfect prom enade of all kinds of people gazing at and commenting upon the scene of smashed and sunken steamers. The river is frozen solid, and huge chunks of ice five inches thick were piled up in shapeless masses around the doomed steamers, flatbonts and broken wharves. A group of four boats tightly jammed together and so damaged that it was not easy to distinguish one from another, lay in the stream on the verge of the chan ncl. All the others arc crushed against tho bank, some were fairly broken in the middle, others had their pilot houses, upper decks and chimnics carried away. The gunboats Kntal, J SbiluJi, lying at tbc loot of Plum street, are- uninjured, ilicir iron wi-ict resisting the pressure of the ice. Yesterday the ice at Cora street was ttrong enough lor quite a large number to cross to and fro. Mails were brought over on sleighs by the post office employees from this .city to a point about 50 miles below there, the river is cleared but there is a heavy gorge at that point and when it moves tbc boats which cr-caped total wreck on Saturday will proba bly all lie destroyed.
