Sho was called Mara ; and wo all of us wondered how a namo of such Badness could have been given to a girl so bright, sweet, and tender. But Authur Ilalscy, who was in love- with her, raved that tho namo was tho softest ho had ever heard, and that it was just such a ono as ho would havo chosen to distinguish her from otiicr women, she be ing peerless. Ho would dilato upon her beauty, her gen tleness, the winning power of her voice, with that mcditativo ecstasy used by certain art enthusiasts in describing a picture, or by connoisseurs in precious stones, who hold up a diamond in tho sunlight, aud ask you to ad miro every ono of its glittering facets. Men who bchavo like this oro generally great bores. But Ilalscy was not ; for wo all of us know tho object of his praise, and thought as well of her as ho did. If tho truth must bo told, tho fact that bo had been tho first to declare his love, and tip evident . strength of her preferenco for him, were, perhaps tho only things that saved us from experiencing for her a passion deep as bis own. It is not even so sure that wo had escaped her influ ence ; and may ba oach of us refloated in se cret how muah lighter tho journey of life might bo niado to him, could he set out on it with Mara for his companion. Yet nobody could tell whenco sho came, cor what was her parentage ; and she was destitute of that commonest buttress to re spectability, and to roguery, too, for that matter, references. Sho had arrived ono day at the small seasido town of Sandbcacb, had taken cheap lodgings, and had given out her namo naively as Mara Child ; only adding, on tho inquiry of her landlady, that she was Miss, not Mrs. Tho same, day sho had gone to Butts's Circulating Library, and had asked Butts, in person, whether ho knew of any family in want of a governess. Butts was a simpleton of tho discursive sort. Besides circulating books, ho was house-agent and proprietor of the Sandbeach Gazelle. This three-handed titlo allowed hint to keep a Eager in tho pics of almost all the inhabitants of tho town, and had led bitn up to a vaguo notion that Sandbeacli belong ed to him. Ho woro a velvet skull-cap, bad a pastryfaco with a doublo chin, and proba bly meant no harm, though he occasionally did some. "You havo held a governess's sit uation before, I suppose 7" was his magiste rial answer to the girl-stranger's question, as she stood at tho counter of his well-stocked shop. "No : I havo nover held any situation," she said quietly. "Then you havo soino one who will ans wer for you, speak to your abilities, I mean and give you a character?" Butts looked at her as his plump fingers unstrung a par cel of books just come from London. Sho was dressed in black, mid woro a very whito collar and cuffs. It w.is a plain drcs?, but not poor. "No," sho replied, with- a shako of tho head. "I am an orphnu, and know of no body who could give ma a character." Butts was both astonished and scandalized. "Tho prico of a Gvc-liuo advertisement in tho Sandbeach Gazelle is ouc-and-sizpenco," said ho suspiciously, "half a crown for two insertions, Tho paper appears twico a week." Mara drew out a littlo network purse, and handed him half a sovcrign : "I think 1 will havo two insertions, pleaso," she said. "You can say 1 am twenty-fivo years old, and am able to draw a littlo ; but I do not play tho piano." Butts rang tho coin on tho counter j and, finding it good, it grieved him to part with so much as sovcnand-ixpenco chango. "Tho subscription to tho circulating library and reading-room is half u crown a month," ho remarked in a half-conciliatory tono. "Wo tako in tho London magazines and The Times whero you can read of peoplo who want governesses. You havo also tho privilege of carrying away two bo'iks together to road at homo." Mara said sho would subscribo ; then Butts asked her whether sho needed station ery, to which sho Bald no, but bought soino drawiug-penoils aud a mill-board, lu brief, most of hr-r ten shillings remained in tho possession of Butts, who, itlll suspicious, tfed up her purchases in a parcel, and, when sho had left his shop, ejaculated, "I don't much liko tho look of her." Wo learned all this u few weeks afterwards when Halsoy and tho other thrco of us had como up from Oxford to read at Sand beach during tho long vacation, Ilalsey had just taken his degree, and was going to Btudy for tho bar ! Merry, Clowes, and myself wero still undergraduates but preparing for tho Honor Schools next term-; and wo had pitch ed upon Sandbeach as tho quietest plaeo on tho map. It was not so quiet, howorcr, but that wo soon found peoplo mado plenty of noiso thcro about their neighbors' concerns ; and it must havo been on tho very morning after our arrival, that wo wero informod by our landlady of this sigularly beautiful and odd girl .who had como to Sandbeach, hoping to find a situation "without references, just as if sho thought all tho peoplo in these parts wero mad-folk, gentlemen 1" In tho oourso of a week, having tecomo intimato with Butts, ho treated us to furthor details; though wo had not asked him to do so. But ho was full of his nubjait, and so wero all tho othur Sandbcachors ; this event being tho nearest approach to a scandal with which tho town had over been favored. It aecmcd that two families had answered Miss Child's advertisement; but thoyhad been able to elic it nothing satisfactory as to her antecedents, and so, of course, had receded, All Miss Child would say, was, that her mother was dead, and that eho had nevor known her fa ther, who had descrtod hor inotner years ago. At first her mother had Boomed in easy cir cumstances; afterwards thoy bad becomo very poor, and had been obliged to work with their needles for their living. How long was it sinco her mother had died ? Six years. And what had sho Miss Child dono since? Worked. Vhcro?Thtsshorol'usedtosay; aud sho would ncithorstato whero her mother had lived, nor how it c.niin that sho herself, after being reduced to live by needlework, was suddenly in a position to apply for a placo as governess. To tho last inquiry, sho had simply answered that sho had mot with soino people "who had been good to her." All this was extremely suspicious. Butts appeared to consider it a premeditated aflrout upon Sandbeach, that auy ono should come thcro not prepared to givo tho fullest account, in print if need were, of his or her lifo from birthday upwards. He doubted whether he was justified in letting her subscribe to his library, and tako home books which would afterwards pass into tho immacculate hands of visitors having references. To bo suro she seldom c.ime now to his reading-room to look at The Times' advertisements as sho had done at first. Tho lady-subscribers had stared her out of countenance, observed a chil ling silenco in her presence, drawn their skirts hastily away to avoid her contact as she pass ed, aud dono other things that were most natural and proper under the circumstances. But now and then sho would como to bring back books, and borrow others ; and a few days ago, added Butts, sho bad glided in timidly at nightfall, and brought him a dozen water-color sketches, asking him whether ho saw any hope of selling them. Ho had kept tho sketches out of curiosity, and shown them to soino of his lady-subscribers, who had been much amused at tho girl's impudct cc. Naturally ho had not been ablo to sell any, nor Vras he' sure that1 he would consent to do so, even had tho chanco occurred ; for ono should never encourago peoplo whom ono docs not know. This is what Butts said. Wo wero lounging over tho counter, cut ting the leaves of new magazines, skimming through tho papers and inspecting the libra ry catalogues. "Let us sco the sketches, Butts," asked Ilalscy, who, liko tho rest of us, had, front the outset of his acquaintanceship with the Sandbeach magnate, discarded tho namo "Mr." as superfluous. "As tho womcu are making such a dead set at the girl, it is obvious sho is pretty," remarked Merry, whoso character was, con trary to tho usual rule, not out of keeping with his namo. "I even suspect that, sinco oar friend Butts talks so lightly of tho sketches, thcro must bo somo merit in them," But no : thero was no merit in them whatever, except such as comes from patient ,work misapplied. Butts, who was quite impervious to sarcasm from not understand ing what it meant, produced tho sketches out of a drawer, and laid them before us with a kind ofoxpostulatory shrug. They were views of Sandbeach aud ncigborhood, the sea by day aud by moonlight, and dis played only the most elementary knowl edge of coloring. Poor, siinplo drawings they were, with dabs of Lluo for sky, gray for sea, and brown for tliingle. It was school-girl art, not so bad as to bo absurd, not good enough to be worth a glance. Merry, Clowes, and I threw a look over them, and no more. Clowes, who was a bit of a cynio, oven said something tart about teaching girls to wasto paper and colors in stead of instructing them to bako aud spin. But ilalscy collected tho sketches, and, after going through thorn cursorily, began to poro over them ono by ono, with deep attention, as if thcro wero beauties iu them which wo had failed to discover, but which wero im blc to him. When ho reached tho last, he held it almost fivo minutes beforu his oyes : then, liko a good fellow that ho was, with a manly sympathy for all that was weak and suffering, ho exclaimed, "Poor littlo thing! Imagine a girl trying to hiro herself out to teach her poor scraps of knowledge, and Lev ing rebuffed overywhero becauso thcro is a iniscrablo secret iu her young lifo which sho wishes to conceal. Perhaps it is her moth er's or her father's honor which sho is en deavoring to cloak. But Butts thcro and his lady-patrons don't chooso to pcrccivo that, if this pretty girl had vicious instincts, sho need never havo troubled any of them for a placo or money. They ban her, tho ladies by pursing up their lips when sho crosses them, tho chastj Butts by preaching her down from behind his counter, and mus ing as to whether ho shall let hoi' beguilo her evenings by reading ono of his books, which sho has paid for. Then sho Tails back upon theso attempts to earn her bread ; and Butts puts them In a drawer, vowing not to sell them, lest ho should encourage immorality. Well, ono day when sho has exhausted all (he methods eho knows for keeping starvation away, sho will find her self, thanks to Butts and his ladies, with a choico of thrco roads beforo her, theft, dis honor, or suicido. If sho takes to tho first road, Butts will bo there uudcr tho coat of a policeman, and with handuufjs in bit pocket. If eho scloots tho second courso, Butts will proclaim that ho foresaw It all along, If sho flings herself into tho sea, wo shall havo Butts wanting to bury Iter in tho MtE VERMONT frAftMEU: AN AGRIOUTYrURAL AND FAMILY NEWSPAPER. folons' corner of tho churohvard, with a vcr diet of self-murder. Isn't that about It, Butts?" Butts, who was quito Impenetrable to the notion that anybody should think of poking Irony at him, did not soixo a word of this, and nnswerod complacently, "Thoy'ro silly daubs; aren't thoy?" "Nevertheless, 1 shall buy them, Bulls," answered Ilalsey. "What Is their prico?" "Oh I" said Butts, who would havo smil ed had naturo endowed htm with a eapaoity for doing so, "slxpcnco npioco would bo a doal of monoy for suoh things as them, I should say." "How do you rato tho worth of labor, Butts ?" muttered Ilalscy, still considering tho sketches, "tiach of theso drawings must havo taken a day and a half to execute. Supposing anybody wero to Bet you working for a day and a half, thengivo you sixpenoo, and call it a deal of money ?' "Thotrage8ofamaloartisan averagabetween thrco shillings a day and ten ; thoso of a woman between nincpenco and fivo shillings," replied Butts, who always took questions gravely. "And It must bo skilled labor to earn tho monoy," took up Clowes, who, although an cxcollcot fellow; Was for 'uprooting scntimcn talism. "Don't let Us havd any paradoxes, Ilalsey. You pay work if it's good : if not( you givo nothing." "That's your theory, Clowes ; W suppos ing wo generalized it, and paid professional men only for tho good work thoy did : what would becomo of most novelists, barristers, and. cabinet ministers, to say nothing of the clergy ? I'll rate tho. drawings according to their industry, and according to my own means, at soven-and-six each, Butts ; or let us say a fiver for tho lot;" and, putting the unknown girl's pictures togothcr, Arthur Halsoy hand ed tho Sandbeach censor a banknote I suppose tho money could not havo lain ten seconds in Butts's hesitating palm, when tho shop-door turned, and admitted a girl, at whoso sight Merry, Clowes', and I, who had begun to banter Ualsoy on his Quixotism, in stantly lapsed silent ; for it needed no ono to tell us that here was tho very person wo wero discussing, como as if to speak mute ly for herself, as to her deserts, her sadness, and her destitution. Sho, was surprisingly lovely, but pale ; and her beauty was of that frail, infant-liko sort, which has astonished eyes, deep and mysterious as velvet, tho tin iest of mouths, and timid candor spread over all tho features liko a bloom. Thcro was nothing in her dress to mark absoluto pen ury : only hor ways displayed somo of that weariness which resulted from tho struggle against a current too strong, for her young arms. Sho colored as sho entered, but ' less bo causo of us than because of two smart young ladies Miss Ida and Miss Ada Wilkins who had como in with her. Thoy Bomchow generally contrived to bo at Butts's, these pretty and proper Misses Wilkins, at tho hour when Merry and Clowes wero thcro ; and, virtue-like, they forthwith began to staro at the strange girl in black, whoso name thoy knew, as if thoy suspected her of shop lifting. Mara' Child laid somo books on the coun ter, aud began to speak in a low' tono to Butts. But Butts, amongst his other quali ties, possessed that of being slightly doaf ; so, with her faco flushing deeper at this necessi ty, tho girl was obliged to ralso her voico so that wo all heard what sho said." ' "I havo brought back theso books," sho faltered ; "and and as it is the end of tbb month, Mr. Butts, I don't think I shall renew my subscription. And pleaso .would you insert this twico in tha Sandbeach Ga zette V (Sho was crimson by this time, and drew a slip of paper, with a half-crown, from Ircr pocket.) "It is another advertise ment, but not for a governess's place." Butts being a simpleton in all things, small as well as great, unfolded tho paper, scruti nized it as if it wero a passport, and read its contents pompously aloud : " 'Wanted, somo work by a nccdlowoman who can embroider and mako dresses. Tha advertiser would work cheaply, and as many hours a day as desired. Address : M. 0., Circulating Li brary, Sandbeach.' " Tho Misses Wilkins tittered, and from that unlucky moment wero banished forever from tho affections of both Clowes aud Mer ry. Ilalscy had covered his sketches with a newspaper, and pretended to be examining an album ; but his oyes, glancing over its edges, wero fastened on Mara ; and, on hear iug tho Misses Wilkins tiuklo out their scorn, ho reddened as if ho had been struck, Ilutts had heard tho titter; aud ho an swered with a frown, "Oh, no ! I cannot let any more lottors bo addressed to you here. You idust liuvu them sent to youn lodgings. But" (and it was evident these words cost him an effort, as if ho wero being constrain ed to do a menia! office), "but this five pound noto is yours : ono of thoso gentlemen has just bought all your drawings." HutU did not Bay which gentleman; but I remember, as if it wero to-day, her turn ing round with tho noto in her hands and looking at us. Sho gazed first at mo, then her eyes rested upon Halsoy ; aud such an oxprcssion of wistful gratitudo roso to her face, that, if I had been in Halsoy's placo, I, should havo faucied sho was speaking to tno, and I should havo answered her,' 'But Ilalsey did not speak ; nor did sho. Her thanks wero all given with tho oyes ; and tho reply to the thanks was convoyed In tho saino manner, that is at ono gianoo, Continued next week.) v offlotah- LAWS OF THE UKITXip STATUS, riisco AT 1115 SF.COND SESSION OF TUB 42d CONOItESS.
