A CLUB:
James Yormley was a famous
colored map who made a fortune of
$100,000 in the hotel business and
left it to his two sons, says the
Boston Transtript. Wormley's
hotel is still cie of the famous
hostelries of th country. Worm
ley was at one time caterer to a
club. Then h began doing cater
ing on his own iccount, and opened
a little place n I street, opposite
the Arlington otel The fame of
his suppers sj ead, and his place
became the xt ort of some of the
most famous i ?n in the Senate'and
the House a gi leration ago. Chas.
Sumner was me of its regular
visitors. Won ley was always very
much attachec to Mr. Sumner and
when the gre ; statesman died it
was Wormley hands that laid out
the remains ai 1 prepared them for
burial. One Wormley's regular
patrons was Samuel Hooper, a
member of th hoe from the Suf
folk district, Massachusetts. He
lent Wormley ;he money to build a
hotel in Was! ogton. The fame of
its table spre; 1 far and wide, and a
supper at "VN irmley's was one of
the experienc j which every visitor
to Washingt n thought he must
not miss. 1 ere are other hotels
larger than the Wormley's and
more resplenlent now, where the
table is even as good as any that
can be fount in New York, but
Wormley's st!l maintains its repu
tation. It j$ in the hands of
James Worn lev, Jr., to whom his
father left it "His brother, W. H.
A. Wormley who was for a time in
partnership ith him, is a caterer.
His wealth i: estimated at $50,000.
It was saic of the elder Wormley
that he was me of the few colored
men with wbma white man could
talk withoutthe consciousness that
he was tailing to a negro. A
generation fr two hence this may
disappear; it can not beeradicated
in a shortc- space of time. But
Wormley it is an exception to the
rule that pverns his race. His
manner wa; simple and utiaffected,
but unmistat ably natural and inde
pendent. His friends were as often
white as black.though his intimates
were necessarily all "of his own race.
He had a great manv white friends
in the south. When "Bob" Olds
was sent north by Jefferson'Davis
as commissioner from the south for
the exchange of prisoners Wormley
got up as fine a dinner as he could,
had it parked in a basket with
several bottles of wine and took it
down to Fortress Monroe. There
he presented it to Olds. "I knew
you hadtrt seen a square meal in a
long time" he said. The gift was
very welcome.
The census of 1890 gives the
statistics of labor and wages in
355,401 manufacturing establish
ments employing an average of
4,711,$.j2 wage-earners of all
classes. These returns show that
of the total number 3,491,456 were
classed as operatives, including in
that description both skilhd and
unskilled labor, and that the av
erage earnings were $455 per year,
or $$.7o per week. A separate re
turn of 759,327 doing piece work
gave the average yearly earnings as
$393, or $7.55 per week.

men owned all the world. When
Babylon went down 2 per cent of
her population owned all the
wealth. When Egypt -went down
2 por cent of her population owned
97 per cent of her wealth. There
are about 50,000,000 people Tn
England, Irela&d, and Wales and

100,000 own all the United King
dom. In 1860 there were but two
millionaires in the United States
and no tramps. Today there are
35,000 millionaires and 1,500,000
tramps. In the United States
three-fifths of the entire wealth of
the country is owned by 31,000
persons less than one-Jtwelfth of 1
per cent of the population. Farm
