Thirx is to be a national con
vention of silver men at St. Louis,
July 22, 1896. It begins to look
like the. silver advocates mean busi
ness.. If neither of the two: old
parties take aa unequivocal stand,
for bi-metalum, there will be a
ticket placed in the field favoring
the free coinage of silver, which
will receive the support of millions
of voters and revolutionize the
status of politics in this country
more than any other movement
since 1861. It does not teem that
the silver sentiment is dying out
very rapidly. Let the good work

Thirty-five years ago the people
of the South were in a state of re
bellion, and the world thought they
would be the means of destroying
popular government on these
shores. Today the eyes of the
nation are turned to this same
Bection, and are hoping and trusting
that these very people may be the
means of averting as great a disas
ter as threatened us in 1861. It
really seems strange, that the men
who once sought to overthrow this
government should now he its
saviors. They once went to arms
to keep the blacks in slavery, and
now they are leading in the struggle
to free the whites from a bondage

W. W. Taylor, editor aud pro
prietor of the Plain Double Dealer,
has had his cup of joy filled to ov
erflowing. A week or so ago, he
wandered into the Senate chamber
and was spied by President Cannon
who gave the ex-dog-catcher a wink,
and invited him to sit on the plat
form a few minutes, which so
pleased the classic gentleman that
he at once forgave the g. o. p. for
all their broken promises. Small

Senator Bruce, of Mississippi, was
once invited to "preside over the
United States Senate while the
presiding officer went into thelebby
to drink a cocktail, and thereupon,
Brace imagined tliat he was des
tined to be nominated for vice-president;
but at the ensuing Republi
can convention, Bruce received only
three votes, and one of those, is said
to have beea cast by himself. "We
advise Brother Taylor to profit by
