The sides in railroad bonds amounted to $2,314,000, the most active being Krie seconds, eor sols, and Canada Southern seconds. - Stocks Htocks closed irregular,with both advances and declines ranging from fractions to 2 per cent. The strength at the opening, which was attributed in part to foreign buying, gave more encouragement, first prices Knowing an advance generally of to l over last evening's close, and con tinued strength during the forenoon, accompanied by considerable activity, in a measure counteracted the unfa vorable news regarding the strike in the West. There was a decided break after midday, led by Northwestern and Union Pacific, but this was checked on reports of more favorable news from the West regarding the trouble between railroads and their employes, which again stimulated buying. Just before thcclose there was e very slight reaction, and the final prices were a shade below the figures rnling at 2:55 o'clock. The result of the day's operations, how ever,, is nn advance for everything on the active list of fractions to I per cent.
