r,ALTiM"r.E, Mi), May 1 '". At the
di-diiut on yesterday ni tin- row
church of ili Holy Crons, in this
city, Ari-hlii-Loji (.lilibons t'tok al
vaiitajze of tho pri'Monco of a lnij-e
nuniher of foreigners, imd spuku
forcibly on the. hins of nnarchism
that liave recently been developeil in
America. In his remark on loyalty
to country ho (said:
the AiU'iimsiiop's aihki.
Tho Governnient of the United
States is a governmerJ"for the benefit
of the people. Htraners from eva y
part of Europe are welcome to our
shores L ke tho sun that shines for
all, the government of our country
sheils its genial rays upon all classes
withou'. regard to race, national! tf or
religion. The glorious banner of our
country protects alike the humble
and poor, the mighty and the rich.
Every man in the I nited States has
an opportunity for earning for himself
an honest livelihood, and many have
opportunities oi acquiring an inde
pendent fortune. The German popu
lation of Bal lmore forms an impor
tant, conservative and influential ele
ment, and the same maybe said of
the " German p pulati n through
out the United Btates as well of the
other nationalities. They contribute
largely to the developmt-nt of the re
sources of the country and daily aug
ment our maternal prosperity. But
as the events of the last few days in
'Chicago has shown, there i-xists in
this country asnnall but turbu'ent e'e
nient, composed of men who bold y
preach the gospel of anarchy, Social
ism and Nihilism. These men are
land pirates, p-eyi g upon the indus
try, commerce and trade of the coun
try. Their favorite weapon is dyna
mite Their mission is to destroy
rat1 er than to build up. Instead of
strengtiening the hands of the gov
ernment that upholds end protects
them, they are bent upon its destruc
tion. Instead of blessing the mother
that open her arms to welcome them,
thev insult and strike her. If these,
men bad their way, industry and
trade would be pa alyzerf ; honest
labor would be unrewarded and gaunt
poverty would stalk over the land.
They have no conception of true lib
erty. They would retain for them
selves the lion's share of freedom,
leaving to other" only a nv rsel. Tne
citizens of the United States enjoy
the amplest liberty, but it is liberty of
law. order and authority. Liberty
without law degenerates into
license. We have no standing
armies in this country, and I am glad
of it. for such armies are a great drain
nnnn, the resources of a country, and
necessarily condemn large numbers of
men to a life of enforced idleness.
Thn strongest force of a nation lies in
the laws pi the land judiciously ad-
ruinisteicd. and these laws are upuold
and sustained bv a healthy public
opinion. The strongest- bulwark of a
naiLOU IB IOUI1U III lllW iuwjlllgrin.tr,
virtus and uatriotism of its native and
adopted citizens. So long as they lova
their country and cherish her tnstitu
tions. and are readv to die for her if
necessary, we will have nothing to fear
from Ana chism. Socialism and Nihil
ism. Socialism is a foreign plant, a
noxious exotic which Brows only in
drk places, and withers and decays
under the genial sun ana aimospuere
of the United States.
The archbishop concluded his re
marks bv exhorting the congregation
to love their country and her institu
tion', and to do all in their power to
promote he' best interests; to avoid
danB-eious. forb dden socie ies; to be-
ware of demagog ies, and not to sur
render th ir liberty to any man or
1ass-of men. and at all times to ob-
erve the uolden maxim of doing unto
others as thev would have men do
onto them.

Sunday ni rn ng, a fuel fl t which had
broken from i s moorings somewhere
up tho river, came drifting rapidly

which was rising at the rate of six
inches an hour. Just below ihe dam
it struck against a fleet of twelve

of tLe shoe's was so great the li ' es

aways had gone far, they encountered
tw enty barges belonging to O'Seil fc
Co., and further down three barges of
the Birmingham Coal Company, and
one each of Brown & Sons a-d
Sneathen & Wils n. The steamboats
Fred Wi'son and Dippold started in
pursuit, but they only saved eleven of
the barges. The other twenty-seven
were sunk and their contents strewn
along the river No further damage
occurred. The 1 sses areas follows:
Malumet Company, 13 barges sunk,
$13,100. O'Noil & Co , 9 barges sunk,

After the train had moved out the
