The West Point llilles of We t Point, who are celebrated throughout the State as having beaten the Volun teer Southrons immediately after the Greenville drill, in which the South rons had been so successful. The Yieksdurg Southrons, who lately won the f &00-pri.e at Savannah in the maiden drill, and at the men tion of whose name the average Vioksburger feels lite pulling ft' his hat aud cheering The Sjuthrons are, imbed, a crack company, whose every evolution is g ace. and whose exhibition drills are alwaya trump cards in drawing auiltecces. The Vicksburg Rifles who are, they claim, and many admit, the ladies' favorites, and who make the South rons get down to solide-t work if they want to win, when the Rifles are in the field. The Winona Rifles, the winters of the maiden drill prire here last fell. Besides these, there are tbe Capital Light Gua ds of Jackson. Miss., the Meridian Rifle- of Meridian, Miss., the Columbus Riflemen of Columiius, Miss., ind the Greenville Rillec of Greenville, Miss , all of whom present a fine appearance and foci sure of carrying off a prize. THE FIRST DAY'S CONTESTS. To-day came off the grand contest for the champiouship cf the State and only Mississippi companies were al lowed to enter. The companies enter ing were the Vicksburg Rifles, the Meridian Rifles and the Capital Light Guard cf Jacison. The virkoburg Southrons declined to drill in this contest, wishing to save themselves for to-morrow and th day after to mo row, when the inter-state drill comes off, and bigger prize-money is up. The West Point Rifles also re fused to drill, be ause they want to drill only against the Southrons. There will be a competative drill be tween firpe two compan es Saturday. The .Vend an Rifles drilled first to day and made several very ba.l breaks. The Capital Lig t Guards drilled tiecoiid, and put up a sp Vndid drill. Their manual was v ry line. Their friends are betting high on them. The Vii'ksburg Ritlei drilird third and last, and showed up handsomely. They are the ladies' favorites, and re ceive m.iny cheers. They feel confi dent of winninz. Thr e thousand people were pres ent at the Buseu Zuuaves' exhibition drill.
