TRUST IN CHRIST ALONE.
PRECEPT AND EXAMPLE OP THE
APOSTLE PAUL IN RELIGION.
A Truth of Universal Application and
of Infinite Importance Synopsis of a
Discourse by the Rev. Dr. W. B.
Botrgs on Sunday.
The Rev. Dr. Boggs, who has been ab
sent for two Sundays on duty connected
with the University of Georgia, preached
to a full house at the Second Presbyterian
Church Sunday on the themo, 'Taul Re
nouncing Sulf-Uighteousnoss to Trust in
Christ Alone." Dr. Boggs took for his
text Phil, ill., 4-9, and said:
AVe huve hore in the form of personal
exporionce a truth of universal application
and of infinite importance. That truth is
that fallen man, man tho sinner, can never
by his own personal merits restore himself
to fellowship with God; the pardon of our
sins and the acceptance of our persons
w ith God must he attained in bouio other
way.
To appreciate the force of this argument
' from experience wo must recall the rela
tions which existed betwocn 1'aul and the
converts at Philippl. Ho was the founder
of tho church; they wero his children in
the gospel. Ho had lived and labored
among them. They knew him woll and
loved him as father. They wero eyo-wit-nesses
of his blameless life and of his tiro
less teal. This letter of Paul trthoin
bears every traco of uninterrupted aU'oo
tion and of their tender care o( him. He
reminds tlicm that at a certain crisis of
his life, as a prisoner at Itoino, they alone,
of all the churches that he had founded,
sent him remittances of money and sup
plied him with comforts. For these con
verts, therefore, no argument could bo
stronger than tho personal experience of
him who had been God's instrument in
thoir salvation. To have hinvnv, so em
phatically, that for himself, "Paul, the
aged," the prisoner of Christ, tho founder
of churches, tiiu inspired apoellc, there was
absolutely no hope save In Christ cruci
fied to say this of himself was to say it
with emphasis for them and for all uicu of.
our sinful rare. Let us. therefore, exam
ine into Paul's personal cxiericura that
we, too, may feel tho force of that argu
ment w hich ho buses upon it to dissuudo
other men from trusting in self.
In the matter of their acceptance with
God men are prono to rely cliii lly.upoa
one or other of two things, or elso upon
both of thcuo together. Uno of these
thing it religious ordinances; tho other is
their moral virtues. Paul here testifies
that he hail both qualifications, so to
lenk, in the highest degree, ami yet that
ho had rejected both of llieiu from being
any part of hoe he lore God in order Unit
be might fly to a crucified Savior and find
refuge in him ulone.
1. Ami tirst, as to religious ordinances.
Paul testifies that he could have Ixjusiud

been complied with from his birth. Ilo
hud not wily observed those written by
(irid's authority, but aUo endless doctrines

Ist of Ritualists. If ordinances, if

then Paul miiil.t routi'lently rely on thetn.
A member in full communion of (iod's

so acknowledged by bis lifedong habit of
going to the sanctuary year by year to
unite with his brethren in devotions.
Paul was a momlH-r in good standing of
that very rlmnli in which the lnl Jesus
bad lived and died. Ho had enjoyed sll its
ordinances, devotions and saemuicnts.
And yet hu rcnoiimi-s all lor Christ.
I-ct us ! Hire that we tinderatand the
Apostle. Ho did not despise or ucglcct
those ordinances as duties iniHNT by
(iixl's authority as means of grace onlained
for our good. Jut so soon as ho had cx
jierienceil Ciixl'e converting and pardoning
grace at Damascus, we read that ho "hpiao
nd was baptized" (Gr. having ktoodAip
bo caused himself lo be biiptid). And
for all men he writes these words: "If
thou shalt confess with thy mouth tho
Lord Jesus, and shalt behevo in thluo
iourt that tiod hath ni'setl Hun from llio
dead, thou shalt be saved. For with tho
heart man hcllcvoth onto righteousness
and with tho month confctulon U mado

duty public confession of Christ must bo
msde. Paul, therefore, complied Unhi-si-tatingly
for himsell and urged others to
do so. Hut ill tho matter of his justillra
lion, that is to say, in the matter of his
pardon and acceptance before God, Paul
tefused to trust even so much as a

ties, and rested wholly tiin Christ.
2. Other men look to their morality for
justification rather than to religious or
