City Authorities Bay the Company Is In
Hole, the Company Bays the City
Oeta a Big Thing, Vet Both Sides Jump
at the Settlement With Eagerness.
The water question in Memphis has been
eettlod for ninny years, so far as tho city
authorities are conccrnod.
This conclusion was reached in short
order at tho Legislative Council meeting
yesterday afternoon.
From comments directed at tho ArrEAL
reporter, who "took in" the meeting and
witnessed the harmonious settlement,
tho city authorities consider themselves
the cxpertest of exports in drawiui; con
tructH, and the water company inou aro
"downed."
"Do you know those follows aro in a
pretty bad hole?" inquired President
lladden of tho roportor.
"Jso; are they, really?" was tho reply.
"They aro that!"
Col. Geort-e Uantt, attorney for the water
compuny, also remarked that the city was
getting a big thing, but it was observed
that all hainl.1 jumped at the settlement,
lest it slip through.
Following is tho report of tho commit
too, composed of Messrs. Pettit, Kney,
Lee and lladden, appointed at tho pre
ceding meeting to consider ways and
menus, as it were, for the two companies
to consolidate:

agreed to give its consent to trio sale of tho
property and franchises of the Memphis
Water Company to tho Artesian Water
Company, on condition, among other
tilings, that tho former company would
nbatiddn anil relinquish all claim to the
exclusivo privilege ot supplying said Dis
trict and its inhabitants with water; there
fore, be it
"Resolved, That in consideration of the
giving of said consent, aud lor other good
and valuable considerations, the said Mem
phis Water Company does hereby surren
der and relinipiish to the State of Teunes
seo, for the beiiclit of said Taxing District,
all claim whatever to the exclusive

extinguish, but in no event to transfer,
