How a Spool of Thread Saved a Ladt's Life.—A fow days ago quite a lit tle sensation occurred atStittville. During the afternoon, while a very respectable manied lady was sitting in her house sew ing, a si range-looking man came into the houso unannounced. Of course the lady was startled, but asked the intruder what his business wns. After staring wildly at her for some time, tho fellow shrieked out, "Anna, you promised to marry me, and did not do so; I am going to kill you 1" Tho lunatic, for such he proved to bo, thon sprang at the lady, with a largo knife in bis hand, and struck at her breast several times. The larly escaped injury for a few min utes by a severe struggle, but the fellow finally succeeded in inflicting a severe flesh wound in tho centre of tho lady's breast. The knife fortunately came in contact with a spool of thread which Iho lady was using and'hnd placed in her bosom, and cut through the In read to the wood. After dealing this blow, the fellow ran from the house and was not seen again. Ha is sup posed to be au escaped lunatic from the asylum in this cily or the poor-house in Rome. Tho lady never ssw the fellow be fore, and as she is not the "Anna" that ap parcriily went back on him, she certainly docs not der.iro to sec him agaiD. Thomas Gullen, residing in the southern portiou of the city, and said to bo the pro prietor of the Keystone skating park, is still thoroughly imbued with the old Dem ocratic idea of the war of the races, and seenu to have forgotten or never to have knowu what tbe nation has passed through since 1861. The recent history of our courts hero in Philadelphia has given abundant evidence of tho fact that tho distinction on account of color has become a thing of the past. Colored mcv havo been empanuelled on several occasions, and have even served io the jury-box ;in fact, one is now occupy ing that position in tho Church case now being heard in the Nisi Prius Court before Judge Williamr. Judge Ludlow—You must understand, sir, that tho law of the laud has made the I colored man your equal in the jury-box", and while you may not be pleased with it, you must, with me, obey the law. I shall now order you into custody until you pay tho fine, and I shall also impose an addi tional fine of $200 every time you refuse to serve. Tho juror was then taken into custody.
