7V> th* h'ditor of the Stat* Journal :
Last night a thief, and stranger among
ns the ritizens of this county, gained ad
mission iuto the houses of Messrs. W. 11.
dudkins, W. B. Manart), (United States
assessor,) L. L. Deakins, and .Tolin R.
Chambliss. Tho last named gentleman
lost $300 in money and his wife's gold
watch. The citizens gave chase to the
scoundrel by telegraph, and otherwise, and
he was arrested this morning at Weldori,
and will be brought here to-night for
examination to-morrow, when you shall
bave all tho particulars. I will state that
the articles have all been recovered except
$80. The thief drank a bowl of milk
from L. L Deakins and took a pocket
knife from W. H. Judkins.

The Ruler of New York. —George
Alfred Townsend, iv the Washington
Capital, writes as follows of "tho boss":
I have known Tweed for very ma_y
years. He is a man without shame, and
very nearly without fear. A newspaper
attack will make Dick Connolly think that
a vigilauce committee is going to hang
him straightway, and he will cringe and
writhe iv pitiable terror, for he is really
nothing but. a "Pence," like Dickens' Fa
gan, and when he dies, even if he dies in
his bed, he will go through the same con
tortions. Sweeny feels a newspaper at
tack like a man of education and worldly
wisdom, who has lived long enough to feel
that the good opinion of the world is the
highest felicity ; but, unwilling to givo up
his bad power, ho can only sit and mope
and have a mental spell of sickness every
time he is admonished that no one respects
him.
But Bill Tweed, or "Tweedy," as they
call bim, is perfectly callous ; uothing im
presses him ; he lias fits of good nature,
spells of licentiousness, a good deal of
gluttony, aud most of the lower tastes well
kept in check : but for all, he is a power
ful business man, always at work, never
wearied out, never thoughtful, stirring
from morn till midnight, doing a good part
of this work himself, a fair judge of ageuts,
a big brutal nature, equal to the most
brutal work and animated with the same
spirit which drives a mill or runs Stewart's
dry goods house—confidence, economy, en
ergy, enterprise. Ho is a man of big build,
brown complexion, square shoulders, big
limbs and feet, gray eyes and a quick,
prompt manner, without a particle of su
avity of seutimentality in him. If you
were to go over and see him now, and say,
,"I have come here to write a sketch
of you exactly as you are, and I
want the points," Tweed would reply:
"I would give them, my son, to you if
it could be done iv a minuto, but there is
a thousand things just now on my hands.
lam on tho make; you put that down,
sure. 1 keep my eyes wide open for what
ever comes along ; stick my arm down as
far as it will go, and pull my hand out its
full as I can. Stick to my friends, that's
me! If that will do you any good, you
go and print it." Tho audacity of this
man takes well with the lower classes,
whom he occasionally descends to. It fills
Connolly with terror and admiration ; and
it makes the more logical Sweeny acknow
ledge Tweed's superior abilities. Tweed
used to bo a chairmaker, with business
habits, and getting into politics out of a
naturally bustling, busy rowdyism, ho read
law a little, learned to make a rude sort of
speech, and has gone from grade to grade
until he rules New York.
i.*
Tweed of "Tweedale."—The marriage
of Mr. Ambrose McGinniss and Miss
Amelia Tweed, on Wednesday evening
last, was made the occasion for a bold and
indecent exposition in the newspapers of
Thursday, of the extent to which the
people of New York are robbed by their
rulers. Every pauper officeholder, who
contributes nothing to tho city other thau
legitimate and illegitimate offspring to feed
in future upon the people, felt obligated to
make a present, aud tho beggars of a few
years ago succeeded in imposing upon
the newly married couple gold aud silver
and diamonds aud corals to tho extent, of
over a half million dollars
Terhaps some hard-fisted mechanic, who
had walked the streets a week in search of
work, which he could not obtain, and left
his miserable room to be relieved for even
a short time of the harrowing cry of wife
and children for bread, wandered into
Fifth avenue on Wednesday evening, and
witnessed the spectacle which that wealthy
avenue presented, from Twenty-seventh to
Thirty-fourth street. He saw tho richly
caparisoned horses, the liveiied servants,
the gaudy coaches, and their occupants
glittering with expensive at.d vulgar orna
ments. And ail these things were to be
seen because a member of the American
branch of the Heuso of "Tweed of Tweed
ale" was married that evening. That me
chanic must have shouted himself hoarse
iv his admiration of Democracy. Of
course he thought not of the man who has
made his millions hy keeping him and his
fellow mechanics in beggary, boudagc, and
want.— New York paper.
