intended to impress upon sinners the neces

blotting out anything that should come like

It was of a pour artist, who portrayed his
religious enthusiasm upon canvass, painting

sea ol Galilee. It was the hour of sunset,
antl the beautiful Savior was deliniated as
wrapt in sacred communion with the father.
Beyond Him stretched the deep, cerulean
sea, bordered with golden fringes from the
setting sun. Still further in perspective
were the dim outlines of receding -hip-,
and rising from au upper sea of mist the
tapering spires of Cans loomed. In all, were
the reflective tints of sky and sea so exquis
itely blended as to throw an atmosphere of
amber light around the Lord, making the
revelation of His presence, dreamy and
Divine. But 'mid the throng who gathered
around this picture to admire, all exclaimed
over the wonderful sea view, none had a
word for Christ. The diamond was lost
in its elaborate setting. At last, in a frenzy
of dispair—and in the presence of a nttilti
iitdc of admirers, the artist seized his
bush, and, with one bold dash, erased
everything bat the Saviour! An absolute
want of appreciation, when forced upon the
sensitive soul of genius, is often more pain

perity erf the country. It is founded upon the
axioms tliat the products of the soil comprise the
basis of all wealth; that individual happiness de
pends upon general prosperity, and that the
wealth ofa country depend*- upon the general in
telligence and mental culture of the producing
classes.
In the meetings of this Order all but members
art-excluded, and there is in its proceedings a
symbolized ritual, pleasing, beautiful, aud appro
priate, which is .resigned not only to charm the
iiincy, but to cultivate and enlarge the mind uud
purify the heart, having at the same time, strict
adaptation to rural pursuits.
The secrecy of the ritual and proceedings of
the Order have been adopted for the pur
pose of accomplishing desired efficiency, exten
sion, and unity, aud to secure among its mem
bers, in the internal working of the Order, confi
dence, harmony, and security.
Women are admitted to full membership, and
we solicit the co-operation of women because ol
a conviction that without her aid success will be
less certain and decided. Much might be suid in
this connection, but every husband and brother
knows that where he can be accompanied hy his
wife or sister no lessons will be learned but those
of purity and truth.
The Order of the Patrons of Husbandry will
accomplish a thorough.systematic organization
among Farmers and Horticultui ists throughout
the United States, and will secure among them
Intimate social relations and acquaintance with
each other, for the advancement and elevation o
their pursuits, with an appreciation and protec
tion of their true interests. By such means may
be accomplished tliat which exists throughout
the country in all other avocations and among
all other classes —combined co-operative associa
tion for individual improvement aud common
benefit.
~Amo._g the advantages which may be derived
ironi i he Order are systematic arrangements ior
procuring and disseminating, in the most expedi
tious manner, information relative to crops, de
mand and supply, prices, markets, and transpor
tation throughout the country; also lor the pur
chase and exchange of stock, seeds, and desired
varieties of plants and trees, and for the purpose
of procuriM help at home or from abroad, and
situations for persons seeking employment; also
for ascertaining and testing tlie merits ol newly
invented farming implements and those not in
general use, and for detecting and exposing those
tliat are mi worthy, and for protecting, by all
available means, thefanmingiuterestsfrom fraud
and deception, and combinations of every kind.
Wi* ignore all political or religious discussions
hi the Order; we do not solicit the patronage of
any sect, association or individual, upon any
grounds whatever except upon the Intrinsic merit i
of the Order.
The better to secure greater benefits to our
members, we desire to establish Granges in
every city, town, and village in the United States.
Information relative to organizing may be ob
tained by addressing tlte undersigned, or either
of the (leneral Deputies.
