REJOICE.
As Ihe smoke lifts from tfaa battle fUM
uf the 7th of November, wo are enable lo
discover the iniiiieilialc results of the great
eoutest in which nine Slates were engaged.
As a whole, it is full of encouragement for
us. The mighty Slates of the North and
West have wheeled grandly into line, and
complete that all-compier'uig nnd powerful
army before which every stronghold of
Demociacy and fossilized t'onserva'i in
is destined to go down. New York, Mas
sachusetts, Illinois, Wisconsin, Mm
and Michigan complete the splendid array
of Republican States.
Let us rejoice, that while we must i.mam
for a time subject to the domination of a
party, in which truculent Democracy vies
with Conservative old fogyisni, the forces
are slowly and surely working for its over
throw. Let us rejoice, that the heart of the
nation is as sound and loyal as ever, and
that the work of nationalizing the South is
not to be arrested. The men who now up
hold the old Hag in Virginia and through
out the South are not to be abandoned to
the lierceness of sectional hate.
The great ally of the rebellion, whose
disloyalty was only nigulphcd by its
corruption and by its cowardice, whii h
encouraged tiie first, and has bun
seeking to foment a second war
against (lie government, thai arch liewl
Tammany, is dead. No more gold will
come from its coffers to corrupt our poli
tics; no more arms to equip bands of mid
night assassins, or to bribe legislatures. It
is hopelessly ruined, and disgraced.
Let us take heart, and purifying our par
ty of its con vt it ions, labor in faith for
the ascendency of truth and justice in the
councils of our State. The result of these
elections settles beyond ipiestjon, Hi-publi
can ascendency in the nation fur the next
live years. With surprising unanimity the
Republican States hate endorsed the ad
ministration of General Grant. Unless
some impinimble contingency occurs, tin
present Chief Magistrate will be renomi
nated and reelected, for the next Presiden
tial term. With the assurance uf (his
strong support, we may well rejoice, and
wait in hope, for the day of redemption for
Virginia.
"The e.OO- can well afford lo wait,
The evil cannot brook delay."
TIIE NEW MAYIIH Ol' < llll'.UJO.
We are glad to chronicle the election of
Joseph Medill, the veteran editor of the
Tribune, Mayor oi Chicago by 12,000 ma
jority. In great emergencies, when __v"
gers are to be met,or disasters are to be re
trieved, the people instinctively turn to their
great men for help and guidance. Then the
petty arts of mere politicians fail, and sleek
mediocrity is thrust aside, in the .search for
powerful leaders. In Joseph Mrdill the
people of Chicago have incorruptible hon
esty, a capacious and richly stored mind
fertile in resources, and a noble heart. IL S
reputation at home and abroad will be a
tower of strength to ihe afflicted city, and
we hope to see it advancing rapidly to its
former prosperity, under his aduiinistra-
