The Trialjor Mrs. Wharton.
Annapolis, _V'..,Dec.9. —Tlie court met at
ten o'clock. Before the hour of com
mencing the court-room was packed with
spectators, including many ladies. Be- j
sides Mrs. Neilson autl her daughter, seve
ral other ladies sat with the prisoner and
her daughter within the bar.
Dr. S. C. Chew resumed the stand, and
testified that that the post mortem did
not indicate poison by opium, A tumbler
containing a sediment was given him on
the evening of Wednesday, the 38th of
June, by Mr. Loney, iv the house of Mrs.
Wharton ; the sediment was a whitish de
posit, at that time somewhat moist; car
ried the glass home and locked it up in a
case; on Friday, June 30, carried that
tumbler to Professor Aiken, and delivered
it to him at the University of Maryland ; !
tasted a very small fragment of the sedi
ment ; it had a slightly acid taste ; applied
no further tests, tartar emetic in substance
or concentrated solution has an acrid taste ; :
the books state that it has a inetalic taste ;
this taste is never noticed. Witness here
stated to the jury the purposes for which
chloroform is administered ; chloral is not
new as a medicine; its application is n«w ;
it has been known to chemists for forty
years ; it is administered principally to pro
duce, and sometimes to keep up, the effect
of chloroform ; whetn administered to a pit- i
tient, it is believed lo undergo a conversion
into chloroform. Witness here explained
the process of making chloroform, to il
lustrate the action of chloral. So far as
witness could judge from the symptoms of
General K. as staled by Dr. Williams,
nothing would have been better than
chloroform followed by chloral.

[tp»i I'll to the New Ifoii: Herald.]
Londem, Dec. 9. —A change in the French

until this plan is carried out.
The change is to be effected directly.
All the details have been arranged. Tlie
