The handy man of the Times, who for a lew years past, has been permitted to use a column of the paper in his own way, to detail city news, which the dignity of the Editor) would not permit them to do, has of late (like the frog in the fable) been puffing out his own skin, until he begins to thiok himself at liberty to dealwth the affairs of his neighbors, as though he was really as big as an ox, and tbey as small as he ased to be. Now we have little time, and less taste for bandy ing the smail blows of iters, but there is a feeling that comes over us when we are shot at so often by rhem with their straw arrows, (though they can do no harm) similar to that a man feels when riding and a small animal comes barking at his horse's heels. I presume most men are ac quainted with this feeling. Now this spectacle gentleman of the Times, on Tuesday last, after his superb article on cutting and slashing, ai d one oth er splendid effort on Joseph Bazzeli, makes a won dertul casualty of a trifling accident that occurred at the new building on the corner of 12th and Main streets (which was, in fact, that Mr Smith,of the firm of James Kersey &. Co, who are doing the carpenter work of the building) let a board fall from the alley in rear of the buiiding, and which struck Capt Kteeee on the head and shoulder, and tor a moment stunned him a little. Mr Smith went down immediately and explained how it happened, and Capt Keesee laughed at his fright, and went about his business; and long before this profound retailer of small news had written, revised, and corrected his i rticle, the Captain had forgotten thatithud happened. The sub Editor, however, determined on the exercise of his reserved rights, and feeling it a sense of duty to fill up his column of dilutable literature, went on to detail this wonder ful casualty, and wound up by calling the live story new building a public nuisance. The next day Mr Smith caused to be printed in the Dispatch, the following: "The gentleman of the small quill of the Times, who details with such profound tact and laste the Billingsgate news of tht city, has been quite prolific with his cerements on the accidents that have hap pened at the corner of 12th and Main strete. We would submit the question : Which is the greatest j nuisance, a man wno is good only at wearing out the seat of his chair, (to say nothing of bis pants, loons) and doing the dirty work ot gratifying a de praved taste by finding fault with ottiers ; or hand some and substantial brick buildings, which beeuti ty aud add wealth to thejcity Y—though accidtnts do sometimes occur in the erection of them The Man ichat let the Plank fall." This nettled tbe little man s« much that be could hardly attend to his office work all day. We can imagine him fussing around the room, not exactly knowing what he was after, and every time he would get out of that chair, his eyes would instinct ively look at its seat to see whether it was really worsted, and in spite of himself, his hands would keep feeling whether there was any worn place in his pants about the place most used ; and for fear some one in the street would discover that there j was a slick place on his trowaers, he would, as he went out, pull down his coat-tails and spread them as wide as possible But soon he determined to fall otick again on his sense of duty to the public, and after procuring the largest kind of a pen, for fear the boys in the office would see him write with .sis smail quill, he seated himself again and wrote the tollowing, which was duly published next morning : "We are really afraid that our sense of duty to the public will compel us to subject the construct or of the Catacombs on the corner of Main and 12th stieets, to a skinning. The operation will be an unpleasant one, to be sore ; but as the safety of the public seems to demand it, we shall apply the scalpel " . , i , i * Now we will ask, what was it that made this dal ly watcher over the public good, wake up all at once to a sense of duty to the public / Some one has suggested tual a tnend of hi* had informed him that the question propounded by the let the i'lank fall) had been pretty generally decided against him, and that maae him think at once, of his sense of duty to the public. Now for his skin ning ; we will wait until morning to see it. We are excessively disappointed this morning; tbe scalpel must be dull; or perhaps we are to be in vited to Washington beforehand, to save annoying the dear public; in that event, as tbe public would suffer by his absence, we would suggest that we go down to Hudson's Pistol Gallery and take each a fire at his iron man, and the one that makes tbe worst shot, shall acknowledge himself|wounded. — Places for reporters to »be provided by the proprie tor of the Gallery. my B—lt' Thk Consteuctqb. irSSa HOOFING!
