THE DAILY DISPATCH Virginia Legislature. Mokdat, June 7. HNM Of DtICRUN. A bill wan passed authorising the appoint ment of Assistants to Commissioners of the licvenue, if the County Court shall deem an Assistant necessary, and requiring t'je Auditor of Public Accounts to furnish printed forms to aaid Commissioners for the books containing lists of the taxable property. A hill was also passed for the protection of the clam interest of the Eastern Shore counties. After soma time spsnt in efforts to perfect a bill from the Senate, proposing to tax Sherifls a certain amount to aid in paying juries and Justices of the Peace, the bill was committed to the Committee on Courts of Justice, witn the Tiew of having it reported in a form accep table to a majority of the Houses. At 12 o'clock,on motion, the Speaker was authorised to vacate the Chair, to enable liitn to sign the enrolled bills, of which there were upward of 400 awaiting his signature. At five o'clock, he resumed the Chair and business was again proceeded with. The whole of the evening session was occu pied with the bill assessing a tax upon She riffs, several disagreements having occurred be tween the Senate and the House on the bill.— Finolly a joint conference committee was ap pointed, who agreed upon the points of disa greement, and then the bill passed in the form by said committee. Durng th* evening session, W. D. Leake, Esq , the Delegate from Goochland, in a com munication to the Speaker, resigned his seat, and the Speaker was directed to issue a writ of election, to supply the vacancy on the 2d day of November next. A unanimous vote of thanks was given the Speaker, who returned his thanks in on appro priate partiag address. And at a quarter past 11 o'clock both Houses adjourned to the day of November next. During the evening session of Saturday, the Speaker presented a communication from the Executive, assigning his reason for granting a pardon to Peggy Jett, convicted in King George County, of assault and battery upon another woman, and sentenced to three months imprisonment in the Penitentiary. Correspondence of the Dispatch. VIRGINIA BAPTIST ANNIVERSARIES. Norfolk, June 4,1852. During the past two days hundreds of stran gers have arrived in our city to attend the an niversaries of the Baptist denomination of Virginia. Yesterday the Curtis Peck brought down over four hundred, and the steamer- Star. from the Mattaponi rwer, one hundred and twenty. Others are now arriving from various quarters. Private houses, hotels and boarding houses are perfectly crammed. It is said to be the largest Baptist meeting ever held in Virginia. Corresponding delegates from Maryland, District of Columbia, Ken tucky, Tennessee, Missouri, North and South Carolina, are in attendance. Among them i notice the Rev. Dr. Bacon, Rev. Dr. Jeter, Rev. Messrs. VVm. F. Broaddus, William C. Buck, E. T. Winkler, Forey and others. In accordance with previous notice, the General Association met this morning in ths Cumberland Street Church. The entire floor of this spacious building was occupied by the delegates, and the galleries thronged with vis itors. Rev. J. B. Taylor, of Richmond, the Mode rator, called the body to order. After the ap pointment of the usual committees, and the report on delegations, the Association was or ganised by the re-election of Rev. J. B.Taylor Moderator, and H. K. Ellyson, Clerk. The introductory sermon was then deliver ed by Rev. Basil Manly, of Richmond. Rev. Mr.Poindexter offered a preamble and resolutions on the subject of the agents ot Northern Baptist Boards collecting funds in the South, and calling on the Southern churches to discountenance them. They gave rise to an animated discussion between Rev. Meosrrt. Poind p xter, Hume and Jcier, and were finally referred to a committee, with in atructions to report to morrow. It is snid they will be adopted by an almost unanimous »ote. The annual report of the Board of Mana gers was then called for, and read by the Cor responding Secretary, Mr. Eltyson. It noticed, 111 feeling terms, the deceuse of two of the venerable fathers of the Association, Rev. Messrs. I'hilip Montague and O. B. Brown. Twenty seven missionaries hud been employed in this State during the year, who preuched at 120 stations, in 28 towns and vil lages, and 52 counties. They preached 2997 sermons, baptized 551 converts, constituted 5 new churches, organized 14 Sunday schools, erected seven houses of worship, and com menced the erection of six others, and distri buted several hundred Bibles and religious books. Amount of funds received into the Treasury, $4,117 21. The report closes with an appeal to the churches to contribute $10,000 the approaching year to enlarge the operations of the body. The report was laid 011 the table till 10-morrow, it being understood that several able addresses will then be made on the motion to adopt it. It was stated that eleven thousand converts had been baptized, and one fourth of all (he Baptist churches in the Stale had been constituted by the Mission aries of the Association since its organization. There are now 612 churches and 231 Ministers in Virginia, with a membership largely over 90,000. Baptized last year about 5000. At two o'clock the Associaton adjourned until to-morrow. In the afternoon the Foreign Mission Socie ty held its annual meeting. Rev. Jas. Fife, of Albemarle, was elected President. The names ot the other officers I was unable to ob tain. Rev. Mr. Taylor read in interesting re port, exhibiting the extent of the foreign mis sion operations of Southern Baptists. Re eeipts for the year $24,548 30, and the expen ditures about the same amount. Fifteen inis sionatiesand assistants are employed in China and eighteen in Africa. Three others are soon to embark for China. Rev. Dr. Bacon, of Columbian College, and Rev. Dr. Jeter, of Sc. Louis, addressed the Society. At an early hour in the afternoon, we were visited by a severe "Northeaster" storm of wind and rain, which continues to the present hour. This did not prevent the assemblage of a large audience, at night, on the occasion of the annual meeting of the Sunday School and Publication Society. Mr. James C. Crane presided, and in the absence of the Corres ponding Secretary, read the annual report.— 1 here are u large number of Sunday Schools connected with this institution, and the sales of books at the store in Richmond were largely incieaaed. ** - It is proposed to employ a large number of Colporteurs in the district Associations. Addresses were made bv Messrs. Winkler W. F. Broaddus, Buck," Manly, Craue und Howell. Although the session was protracted until eleven o'clock, the intense interest manifested by the congregation seemed in nowise to abate. The pe culiar advantage of the article which they offer, is this: in all tobacco there is a concrete oil. Nicotine, one of its active principles, and which i 3 eminently poisonous The effects of this principle are disa greeably felt, more or less, upon the nerves and stomach, by all smokers. The Tobacco offered by the undersigned has been entirely deprived of its poisonous properties, whilst, at the same time, it retains all its fragrant and aromatic qualities. So mild and pleasant has it been rendered that persens of weak nerves can use it without inconvenience.— It has the additional advantage that it does not leave that strong and pungent odor so perceptible and offensive in close rooms.
