Henry Clay'b Advice to Yovko Mek.— Two years ago, during Mr. Clay's address to the students of New York State and National Law School, in Ballston, Spa., one otyect of which is to train young men in the art of ex temporaneous speaking, he aaid, when coußt tag on the advantagea of the institution— "I owe my success iu life, to one single fact, viz: that at the age of 27 I commenced, and continued for years, the piactice of daily read ing and speaking upon the contents of some historical or scientific book. These offhand efforts were made sometimes in a corn fieid, and at others in the forest, and not unfrequent ly in some distant barn, with the horse »nd the -ox for my auditors. It is to this early prac tice of the great art of arts, that I am indebted for the primary and leading impulses that stimulated me forward, and have shaped and moulded my entire subs'quent destiny; im prove then, young gentlemen, the superior ad vantages you here enjoy. Let not a day pass without exercising powers of speech. Cssar controlled men by exaiting their fears ; Cicero by captivating their uffections and swaying ■their passions. The influence of the one per ished with its author—that of the other con tinues to this dnv." A BeaH Ficht.—The Portland Argus con-, ■tains the following account of a bear light which transpired in Andovei, North Surplus, Oxford Co., Maine, recently; As Eranius Bean, a young man of 20 years, -was haying in his field, accompanied by a boy -of 12, named Dunn, he looked up and saw near faim, a large black bear of the white-faced breed, (the most savage of the black variety.) Having taken his gun with him to shoot par tridges. he caught it up and fired at the brute, but with li tie effect, us the bear immediately began to close upon him. Beau fell hack slowly, loadiug his gun the meantime, when, ju?t as he had got his charge in, his heel caught against a twiz and he fell backwards, and bruin leapt upon hitn. His situation now was a frightful one, but his coolness did not forsake him. and he immediately fired again, but with no visible effect. The bear at once went to work, seizing his left arm. biting through it and lacerating it severely. While thus amusing himself, he was tearing with his fore paws the clothes and scratching the flesh on the young man's breast. Having dropped his arm, he opened bis huge mouth to make a pounce at bis face. Then it was that the young man made the dash that saved his Hie. As the bear opened his jaws, Beau thrust his lacerated arm down the brute's throat as far as desperation would enable him. There he had him. The bear could neither letreat nor advance, though the position of the besieged was anything but agreeable on so warm a day as Thursday last. Bean now culled upon the Ipd to come and take from his pocket a jack-knife and open it. The boy was u fitting companion for this brave youne man. He marched up to the work bold ly. But before he could get at the pocket be had to crowd the bear's head over a little to get at it—the beast meantime not being at all easy with such a huge mouthful iu his throat.— Having got the knife, Bean, with his untram melled hand, cut the bear's throat fiom ear to ear. killing him stone dead while he lav on his body! He then threw the beast off, notified his friends, had his wounds dressed, and is now comfortable. It was judged the bear weighed nearly 400 pounds! One of his paws, which our informant saw, weighed two pounds eleven ounces. Muggins once read Shakspeare, and thinking itwas ' not much of a book," determined to let the world see a touch of his quality, in the way of authorsing. "So you wrote a novel, eh?"' said we; M atrai»ee that we have not seen it. Did vou publish it?" 3 "Why, yes—that is—l wrote it, and took it to an editor, and the blockhead only made light of it!" replied Muggins. "Made light—how ?" •'He looked over it, carelessly, and deliber ately lighted his cigar with it!" _ Scene in Cccrt.—Not long t>iuce, one o the learned counsel in a small suit deemed it necessary to shake the testimony of a Mr. Samuel Butterwoith by impugning his veraci ty.
