J bat the favorite method appears to have been
j stilling 111 the head wnh tomahawks. The
I blush ol dawn shone upon this fearful speeta-

! Someof tli**se wretched creatures had lived

the dreadful work. This is no sensation sto

In tbeir blind and insatiate fury they killed
one of their u\mi party, (McEiroy,) while

to Hull's house, and remained there a week,

house, upon which the corpses were allowed I
to foster and rot m the blaze of the day.
Alter th" last s.junw and child bad been I

W. 11. Sewaki>.—lt is stated that the change
of the Chicago Republican Convention from
: the ilth of June to the loth of May, is regard
ed by the K> publicans as a move of tbe Sew-
I ardites to get it into their own bauds. Of the
speech of Seward in the Senate, the If. Y. Ex
press says
What is most to be reaaarked in this remruk-
J able speech. Hum certainly a nio-t remarka
ble man—is not any new linht tbat il sheds
upon the relationship, North and South, on
the slavery issue—but the toning down, the
glossing over, and the rounding off 0. the
, -harp edges ol the misebievoas, ii not revolu
tionary, sentiments advanced by tbe orator ia
bis speech in this state, a twelvemonth ago
and more particularly in the famous "iirel
pressible speech*' at Rochester. Thus, we
look in vain now tor a repetition ot thai Ro
chester phrase ;in \ain for the? extreme mea
sures against the "pro-slavery oligarchy,"
so earnestly urged then: in vain for a word
j or sentence of any kind,'that would bid to
the belief ihat the speaker had ever dreamed
of such a thing as an irrepressible conflict.—
Hut we do flud in theirsie.ul the most glowing
panegyrics of this Union, and ihe most saint
like appeals to toleration and fraternity, cou
pled with au unequivocal expression 01 theat
rical horror at the treason ot John Brown
and of reproach for all Who seek. like him, to |
•'enforce their peculiar principles by the
I sword." The main object Oi this speech from I
j tha original patentee of the irrepressible con
j flic, is transparent enough. The object is to
conciliate, aa iar a possible, the conservative
elemeat ot tbe Opposition, with a view lo the
contingencies ot iba coming Presidential elec
tion. The doctriaa enunciated at Rochester
by Mi. Seward, before be went 10 Europe, was
bo alarming, that iv view oi ihe fearful agna
tion since, which iias been 111 part its bitter
fruit, many Republicans eveu were doubtful
of tbe expediency of taking him a» their stan
dard-baarer. 11 is to o, met these fears that this
oily speech was expressly made. Hut anybody
can see it is the incendiary profeaaiag to help
extinguish the conflagration after he has ap
plied lhe torch. In oiher word.-, it is the Sen
ator's highest bid for the sectional nomination
at Chicago; the last cam, which is exacted to
WMi tor Mm the stakes tor which he has beeu
playlnp; so desperately these many years past.

of the Governor of Sagua, in response to a de

Argued.— Tbe argument before the Conn of
Appeals, on thelsltb street obstruction case
has been concluded, but the Couri has no; yet
given its decision. It will >>c remembered th-t
when Messrs. Warwick .V Barksdale took pos
session of a portion of IlMIi atreet aad fenced
it m, th.* Mayor summoned them before him
and fined them for obstructing a public*
ili.ro ugh fare. The defendants then sued un
a writ of prohibition, to prevent the Mayor
trom collecting the tints, and the case wa*7ir
guetl at length, and with great ability, before
Judge Meredith, who decided iv favor of the
cny, and virtually against the right of Messrs.
V. . k B. to the streei. From this decision an ap
peal was taken to the Curt of Appeals—
If tbe decision of Judge Meredith is sustain
ed, the Mayor will bave the right to fine tin*
parties for every day the obstruction contin
ues alter that decision is rendered. If Judge
Meredith is reversed, we presume tbe City
(.ouiicil will proceed Htonce to bave tbe pro
party condemned, and thus put an end to
mrtiier litigation. Tbe public, and especially
the business houses oa l-.th street, souibof
Cary, have been seriously inconvenienced and
annoyed l.y the obstruction in tlie street, and
will be gratified at any decision that may open
the thoroughfare. If the claimants have a
right to the property, tbey should be paid for
it. If ihey have no right, the obstruction
should be removed immediately.
