This Tassel was to sail oa th* 16th last, (last Saturday weak.) Unless she Is much slower than she has thecredltofbelng, sheshonld have been already in port. But* no Udings of her seem to have beea received. The fact is, her brief history presents snch.a catalogue of disappointments, failures and catastrophes, that people seem to have lost all confidence in her movements. There has, heretofore, bean no better assurance that she -was aei coming, than an announcement tbat she tea*. As a proof of tbe low ebb or public confidence, only twenty-fiv* passenger* had engaged berths up to the 13th of Jane. For oar own part, we have no doubt she has been again de tained, aud we advise all who feel aay curi osity Bboat her, to do as we are doing; that is, to expect her when they see ber, and aot one moment before. There must be shockingly bad managemeat ef ber affairs ia com* quarter. «• •m Her agents in New York, meanwhile, seem to be determined not to be taken unawares.— They act upon the presumed probability tbat ( after all. she may come some of these days* like a thief in the ni-ht, when she is least ex pected, and they stand continually oa their guard. They hare mads arrangement* to have her announced by telegraph from Sandy Hook as soon as she shall heave in sight, if that auspicious moment should ever arrive, wl.lcb seems somewhat doubtful. In the interval they hope and believe—as the Jews do about tbe rebuilding of the temple—tbat the event may come to pass, tbongh they sbonld never live to see it. Continued disappointments, nevertheless, sink ths heart of man, aad the constant postponement of hope renders it sick unto death. We profess to be still hopeful, but incredulous, and should we ever seethe great ship, we promise to believe. For who knows, after all, that she may not be some my th of a craft, some " Flying Dutchman " of onr cousins' imaginations, Invented to gull his kinsmen on this side of tbe water, and tnrn them into a laughing stock? Arch bishop Whatblt proved, according to the most approved rules of logic as taught at tbe schools, tbat there never was any such man as Nafolboh Bobafabtb, or such fight as Waterloo. He proved it by a process tamillar to every obstinate unbeliever, being tbe very same that led tbe late lamented Jambs Head Ltkcb to the conclusion that there was no such country as Oregon. He bad never seen Bokapabtk, and had never seen anybody that hnd, so far as be could as certain with certainty. To he sure, he had seen many people who said they bad seen him - hut—new difficulties springing up at even step—how could he know that they told tbe iruth? Now, who has seen the Great Eastern I lf there be any maa who says ha has seen her, how are we to know that he Is not playing upon onr credulity! Sum* wit, when a friend told him a very improbable story, said, "as you say you sate it, I believe it; but if I had seen it myself, I should ne* have believed it." Now, "our sentiments," with regard to this mammoth steamboat, are exactly there verse of all this. We are determined to be lieve tbat there is such a vessel whea we see it, and not before. Until tbat time we shall ' continue to be as incredulous as the Irish > clergyman, (we forget bis name,) who per sists in maintaining that the san travels aroand theearth.every twenty-four hour»,and cannot be made to believe ihat the earth turaa upon it* axis, because be cannot fas} it, or that anybody ever circumnavigated the globe, be cause he waa not of the party. We have beea writing about these doubtful matters, until we have become almost as great a skeptic as Blehop Ban-arntßY. "Since yon come to that," said th* India* to the Misatou ary, "I doa't believe that •*** story* •ither." We feel ourselves doubting whether ihsre are really aay each people as the Japanese. We do not yet, however, go qwlto as far as the Bishop la question. He distrusted tbe evi dence of his own senses. He said, "there was no matter," aad wa have Brnoa'* authority for saying he proved it, too. How he contrived to accomplish that stupendous feat of ratio cination, wa are unable to say, for we are not familiar with his writiags. But we know a maa caa prove anything, when be sets reeo latoly to worh to de it. It is sufficient to say thatwe confide in the vary In telligenoers which the Bishop must have rejected. Wa trust to oar eyes, aad when we shall havßseea the big ship and tha subjects of tho Tycoon, we shall believe. ; Miss Talley'a Fees*. Messrs. We all tote to grow yon ag again, to go back ia visions to tha babbling brooks aad green Aelds, and the sound of a horn calls up all thsss associations and takes aa once more to th* calm aad quiet period of onr own aud the world's history.— If the Coaacll expected to stop all noises ia the street, it woald better not have any streets at all, or adopt such a policy as woald make the grass grow la them.— Tuey oaght to have all the carriage wheals well greased, forbid all conversation in a loud tone, the laughing audibly of all persons la eettously inclined, th* bellowing of cows aad tbe barking of dogs. Th* bora is th* least aaaoyiag of all street noises, aad, associated with the idea of ice, is agreeable aad refresh lug. If there are some whom it annoys, the same objection would forbid th* blowing of all horns, and then what would become of all the patriots and politicians who blow their own or each other's horns, in tbe newspapers and on tbe hustings, and thereby give offence to all who look upon modesty aa a commend able quality 1 In fact, ihere Is nothing going on in the political, commercial and literary world but the blowing of horns, each man blowing bia own, unless tbe office can be bet ter performed by another,'and all this without regard to tbe quiet aud repose of people wbo ar* mora disturbed and irritated by this in cessant self-trumpeting than anybody possi bly can baby an Innocent ice born. On one occasion, Lorenzo Dow, who was about to address an oat-door congregation on the subject of the last judgment, placed a lit tle negro boy in a tree with a horn in bi* hand, and instructed bim, at a signal which he should give, to blow with all his might — The rural audience assembled; the eccentric preacher waxed warm with bis subject, aad picturing to bis hearers the fearful scenes when the dead should be called to judgment, he suddenly exclaimed, "Sound thy trumpet, archangel," whereupon tbe concealed musi cian gave aa appalling Sourish of his instru ment, which scared the congregation half ont of their wits. Even when they discovered the cause of the uproar, it was difficult for them to compose their nerves, which seem to have been as easily affected by horns of this kind as some of our own delicate organizations.— Lobbbzo, in no wise disconcerted by the dis covery of bis black angel in the tree, addressed his hearers in words whicb are not unwortby the attention of those wbo are put in such tribulation by the music of the ice carts: "If a little nigger with a tin horn frightens you so, what will you do when Gabriel sounds the last trumpet 1" Lord Palmerstea en the Siciliaa Re vol u tien, ate. Tbe reply ot Lord Falmbbsto:-, iv the House of Commons, ou the l-_t.li of June, to certain questions propounded by Mr. H. B. Sbbridam, appears to be decisive of tbe fate ef Sicily. Mr. S. asked Lord Pa-Mbbbton whether it waa tbe intention of the Govern ment to increase the naval force in the bay of Naples and around Sicily to such an extent as to afford adequate protection to British sub jects ; whether it was their intention to com municate to the Court of Naples their abhor rence of the bombardmeniot Palermo; whether such communication was to he accompanied by a recommendation to conduct tbe war hereafter on civilised principles, and whether it was their Intention to protest against, and, if necessary, avert any attempt by foreign powers to interfere in behalf of the King of Naples I Lord Palmbbston said, Ist, tbat a sufficient number of ships had already been sent- 2d, tbat a diplomatic agent from the Court of Naples waa already on his way to London and Paris to make communications to tbe two Governments, end that, doubtless, proper representations would be made to him with regard to those larbaritiea, which he regarded as a disgrace to the present age. 3d. With regard to aay remonstrance that might be made, he had no hope that It would have any effect, being, on the contrary, fear ful that the same thing might happen in this case which occurred after the sack and mas sacre of Perugia; that is to aay, that the offi cers engaged in it might meet with rewards and promotion, instead of punishment. 4th. The Neapolitan government had already ap plied to foreign powers. Austria had pe remptorily refused, France had given an an swer similar to that of Austria, and, he con ceived, It was not necessary to say what the feeling of the British government bad been, and woald be, in a ease of the kind He then said in substance, that governments like that of Naples, whea they had driven their sub ject* into resistance by their own cruelties, were vary apt to become alarmed, and to ap ply to old friendly powers for assistance, to remove tbe authors of the revolutions.— "These governments," said he, "forget that they are themselves the real, original authors of tbe revolt—(cheers)—and of all those revo lutionary movements—and that if their prayer were granted, the first step would be their own removal." This Is very plain and very appropriate lan guage. Fbabcis 11. cannot fail to hear it, though he were deafer than the "deaf adder" of the Scriptures, and to learn from it, If he has not long sine* known it, tbat bis sceptre is about to pass from him forever. He can took for ao aolp from abroad—be must depend entirely upon himself and hi* own resources. Wo do not believe that the rumored mediation of Nafolxob, on tho condition th it Sicily be separated from Naples, aad governed by a younger branch of tho Neapolitan Bourbons, will be accepted by the latter, or that if it be, the Sicilians will give their consent.
