This work is bein-- carried on Jointly by
tbe I'nited States -and the city. Colonel j
William 1*. Craighill, of the United Mates
Engineer Corp-, bas direction of the work.
?estated by Mr. H. D. Whitcomb, who i-;
employed bf the eily. The present-cheme
is to obtain a depth to the city wharves of
ld feet at mean hii*b tide. The avail, ible
depth ol channel in 1870 was |0J feel. Du?
ring the past year -everal ve-si ls drawing .
Ill feet have loaded at tbe wharves at Kock
etts, and others drawim.* If feet bav loaded
at thc Cbeeapeake and Ohio wharves and
proceeded le sea without difficulty.
The contract, for widening DotCU t-apcut
off wa* completed in May. and this improve
mont, which saves five and a half miles of j
navigation, has now a minimum width of
SOO feet iii Ihe middle, and is 300 feet wide
it thc ends, with a blfb-tidO depth of 18
feet.
Work on the channel near Richmond was
resumed bf the city in June, and wa* re?
sumed by the United States tn August.
Thee operations consist in tte*-*"-' '""'
dredging where tbe mali rial in ftm channel
le too herd I i be moved by the current-.
Where the river is ol.?tmeted by sand-bars
a system of contracting the width by vvin::
dams and dikes is being carried out, the
effects of which are sometimes aided by
dredging. These works have been I ?rge|y
extended during the loetail month*; but
a- the river bas been very low, until about
two weeks since, the tull effect of the*e
arorfci has not been felt, itecent examlno
tioneubOWi bow. vcr, some enlargiment of
the channel in width and depth, which be?
low Richmond bar is now 17 feet deep at
ordinary high tide, and from Rocketts to
over the b ir fully 16 feet. The examination
on Rocketts reef, when- theexcavation is in
rock, und where small points may exist of
I.-aa depth, bas not been thorough enough
lo warrant any statement of Considerable
Increase la depth over la-t summer, but thc
ctiannci baa been widened about /infect. A
careful siirvev will be made of this reef a
soon aa operstlona oe it are inapended for
the winier. V<---els eui safely load to about
-ix inches less than the depth of channel in
this liver.
As the depth of channel to R'chmond now
approacher that over Harrison's har, which
is nearly forty miles below the eily. Colonel
Craigbill has contracted for channels SOO I
feel wide willi a centre depth ul If feet Bl
int.in lom tide through Harrison's bar.
Swami's I'oiTit shoal, and Qoose Hill Hat*;
all of wblcb arc lo bf completed by July l,
IMO. Thc contractor b hom ll work at
Harrison's bar. When thi-contract is com
plcted reaach* drawing il feel caa come to
City Point, aad leretal miles above, nt ordi?
nal y high tide; and a comparatively small
expenditure, u >t over flo.ono, will enable
such a ve-scl to come to verina, fifteen miles
below the city.
The Improvement of tbe river bas thus far
progressed Steadily towards the depth in?
tended by the United states engiueero- and
there 1* no good reacoa to fear that the de
?*? i*_'11 will not bc fully accomplished in a
sboit time if tiie appropriations called for
are furnished. *
