In 1912 the development of the Mi
ami ore body for mining was exten
sively carried forward Ly extending
the extraction drifts on the 410-foot
level so as to undercut the main ore
body on that level, and alBo to get
underneath the Captain ore body and
to connect with the Captain shaft
The develoimient of the 570-foot level
was extensive so as to prepare this
level for an extraction level. It, is be
ing cut up Iu the same rectangular
gridiron fashion as the 420-foot level,
and Is so arranged that when the flnai
method of mining U determined upon.
It will be mailable for any method
belected. The third extraction levei
was arranged for in the main shaft at
a depth of 720 feet, bu Bothing has
been done at this point as it may be
advantageous to put this IevI to a
sitU greater depth, repending upon the

fclfcing. The shrinkage stoes which
have been tried out on the 420-foot
level are nearly all in shape, but the
work of cutting out with square sets
above them and the intervening pil
lars was not completed. The indica
tions so far are that this method of
combined shrinkage stopes and pij
lai slicing will prove' to be econom
ical both as regards percentage of ex
tractloii and cost.
The early estimates of ore reserve
assumed ibe pre to extend to a depth
of only 50 feet below .the 570-foot lev
el. During the latter part of 1012
eight diamond drill holes v. ere p'lt
down from the 570 foot level showing
that the ore extends tn places trom
160 to 200 feet below that level, and
In some places the bottom was no
reached. The indications are that the
ore will go to a much greater depth
than was expected, following, along

In January. 1912, the mill was treat
Ing at the rate of 2200 tons per da
and since June 1, at the rate of near!
3000 tons per day The ai proximau
uroductlon for the year was 32.00O.00u
pounds of refined copper. Tne yearn I
work in the mill demonstrated the
increased efcclency of the Hardinge
pebble mills over the Chile mills, and
orders have'been placed for the riar
dtnge pebble mills to replace tbt .
Chile jnllls as they are worn out An
extremely heavy tyie of intermediate

pany, are being introduced, one St &
' time, In each section of the mill. In
addition to this experiments indicate!
the desirability a certain amount of
mineral which is at present lost in the
sand tailings, and these improve
ments will gradually be installed dur
ing 1913. The indications are that
with these betterments the capacity
of tb present mill can be materially
Increased over its present limit of
2,000 tons per day.
In the power bouse the sraces left
for new machinery w-ere filled by the
installation of a 600-hors power boil
er, a 4000 cubic foot air compressor,
a 1250-kw. generating set, and a sec
ond condenser. A second 400-horse
jiower synchronous motor vs In
stalled at the Ilurch pump -nation,
thus giving .tlia.pumplng plant with
im two pumpsfa capacity of 2400 gal
Ions of wattir per minute. A tailing
elevator was installed below tho mill
raising the tailing- to a height of 73 1
feet and permitting of its discharge
In the second gulch below the mill.
On 'the surfaee, a number of houses
where built, and a hospital, jointly
owned by the Miami and the Inspira
tion, is bow being created. ITi work
for the year procrewyed smoothly and
the prospects, as above stated, for
increased ore reserves and an in
