Continued From 1'ago One)
Arlsona-Whlte Chief Mining company
have been applied for by II. S. Cooper
and A. H. Glenn, who purpose turning
over to tbe company a group of valu
able claims In the south end of tho
camp. Judge T. W. Wainpler Is as
sociated with them In the enterprise
and is looking after the financial end.
Judge Wampler is an authority on
mining law and ia equally as well
versed on matters pertaining to prac
tical mining. He lias practiced min
ing law and followed the mining busi
ness for more than 25 "years, slany
former Nevadans now residing here
remember Judge Wampler as a prom
inent banker, Jurist and mine operator
at Wonder during the halcyon of that
camp.
The estate of the Arlsona-Whlte
Chief company comprises ten claims
and carries an outcrop 10 feet wide
for a length of 4 000 feet. Develop
ment of the property was started con
currently with the filing of the incor
poration papers with the Arizona
Corporation Commission. At a depth
of 14 feet a body of ore was encount
ered In the shaft that shows values
of nearly 1100.0k In the pannlngs.
Samples taken from the vein gave
assay returns of $44.03 and $24.80 per
ton in gold. As the shaft Is deepened
the ore body Is widening and is pre
senting stronger indications of per
manency. Arizona-Tom Reed.
Plans for the development of the
estate of the Artiotia-Tom need com
pany have, been formulated by George
F. Moser,- saperihtendent, and Within
a short, time will be in operation. As
the acreage adjoins that of the Pion
eer Consolidated company, and the
latter's main shaft Is so situated as
to be available for the development
of the former, tt is the intention to
utilize the shatt and its equipment for
that purpose until such time as opera
tions are resumed by the Pioneer com
pany. Negotiations to that end have
been closed with the Pioneer manage
ment and will have the effect of great
ly reducing the cost of the initial de
velopment of Hie Arisona-Tom Heed
ground ; and this at a time when every
dollar counts with the Artjita-Tora
Reed people. That la to say, the ex
tension of the mammoth Pioneer ledgo
will be developed at a depth of 400
feet in Arisona-Tom need ground
through medium of the Pioneer sliaft
nnd la willing to wnger that it will
hold up to hh expectnttqns.
The Catev-Jones. ill
V. S. Itowley and associates, who
recently optfbned tho J. J. Casoy
group of claims have turned their op
tion to tho Casey-Jones Mining com
pany, a recent incorporation. Mr.
itowloy nnd his associates retain
largo stock Interests in the company
and will have control of Its affairs.
The CaBey group was tho scene of a
Gold strike early last spring that
caused considerable excitement local
ly. Specimens of porpliyry ore brought
Into the camp by Casey at that Urns
showed considerable free gold. De
velopment work to date tends to sub
stantiate the golden promise held out
by the specimen rock. It is probable,
however, tho Casoy claims will prove
a Very largo and valuable low grade
ore proposition rather than one of sen
sational valuos.
The- phorphyry dlkv llint trends
through the acreage is the largest in
the Tom Ileed-Gold Itoad District,
and paralleling this dike are the ex
tensions of the Ontmim M. M., vein,
the Hartmnn vein and either the mainl
Black Ragle vein .or a branch thereof.
The dike is composed of white porphy
ry and calclte, has a varying breadth
of from 200 'to 700 feet, outcrops bold
ly and Is highly mineralised. Samples
taken across a width of several fB6t
at surface gave assay returns as high
as $7.00 pei; ton. The average brook
crosses 10 feet at surface approxi
mates $3.80 per ton. The surface
values mentioned are above the aver
age for this camp It is probable the
veins from which they were obtained
will at depth make into a large body
of pay grade milling ore.

Company, and many others are con
stantly on the watch for mining prop
erties of promise, and at that they do
not sit back in the office in New York
and wait for a fully developed prop

no coat, as seems also to be the im
precision. These companies have
scouts In the field constantly; their
agents are constantly traveling
around the mining country on the
lookout for prospects of promise; they

The objection one hears to dealing

Ilutlness, genorolly, in the District has been comparatively slow during
the past fortnight. This has been due, to a large degree, to the natural
slowing down of general business in tbe month of September. People are
either going or' returning from vacations, and money has tightened up. The
first of the coming month, however, will witness a wonderful and unprecedent
ed business In the District. , .
BUREAU OF MINES.
The pures.ii of Mines of the University of Arliona has had many Inquiries
concerning the Short' Course for Miners and Prospector, but desires to know
(Infinitely all those who are planning to take tbe courses starting October 4th.
In order that proper accommodations may be made for them. This Is really
very necessary because of the fact that the University dormitories are filling
very rapidly. Short course students can secure board and room on the cam
pus for six dollars per week, whereas If reservations are not made for them,
(hey wold be obliged to pay from ten to twelve dollars a week off tbe campus.
The courses for the practical miner will start about January 17th, giving
them a little morelme, but the students In prospecting should have their
names In as early as possible. This will not bind them in any way should
circumstances prevent their coming.
Any further information desired may be had by addressing the president
of tbe University.
GOLD REED LOOKS GOOD.
Gold Heed, which Is owned mors extensively In the Warren District than
any other stock in the Tom Reed-Gold Roads District, looks like it is on the
eve of something sensational in the line of development and ore. The man
agement of dold Heed, for the past several months, has been rather reticent
In regard to the work befog done. Here of late considerable has been leaking
out and a summary qf that looks mighty good to the many in Blsbee who
own stock In tie coin pa ny.
Under tbe direction of Manager L. V. Moore, remarkable gold values are
being uncovered on the STB level of the Gold Reed. While the general average
of ore Is over $1 per ton, there are bunches qf high grade, and it is said
they are encountered at frequent and satisfying intervals, which nut to and
far above the- $100 mark. Sonie of this high grade Is now being sacked for
shipment. The vein baa a strong outcrop and good pannlngs have been made
from many parts of the surfaced There is one vein, tunning through the
property, which is now being crosscutted, that gives every indication of being
160 feet wide.
The abaft is down to tbe 375 level. From there Moore Is drifting under
tbe ore chute and has gone a matter of 100 feet. He is also crossctltting and
has encountered some excellent showings In fact the showings are so good
that ii Denver combination of capitalists have made several offers for-the
whole or part of the property.
Another significant factor in the Gold Reed development is the indication
that the stock will be listed, shortly, on the Uw Angeles nnd San Francisco
stock, exchanges. Robert Manson, n heavy stockholder in the company, stated
severer days ago, that as soon as President Saase returned to iiisbee immedi
ate steps would be taken leading to tbe placing of the stock on the above
exchanges. vt
Taken aJ-in-all Gold Heed looks food. Certain local Interests are buying
every share of file stock, they can get t anywhere neat tbe original price.
The general actlvitf in tlje Oetman Dlatrict" has (Increased interest and con
fidence In the Oatraan District and, with the development which shows ex
cellent value; and in commercial quantities, this Blsbee combination prom
ises to "bring home tbe bacon".

bow to present your case in good form
is taken up later In this article.
It stands to reason that these de
velopment syndicates are not In busi
ness for their health and are no differ
ent than those n other businesses.
They are going to drive the beat pos
sible bargain. ICyeryone wishes to se
cure the best possible bargain; the
seller Is willing te take more than his
property Is worth if be can get It. It
lis nothing but a question of bargain
ing, anu it win ne round tnat uiese
larger syndicates will often tafce
chances on purchases that smaller
companies cannot afford to take. They
will often take an option on a prop
erty, and par a goodly sum for tbe
option, only to find on further explora
tion that the property does not live
up to thet rexpectatlons, and the
amount paid is forfeited. '
Then, it Is unlikely that any com
pany ia going to apend any great turn
In the development of a property
without having a control so that the
xeller must expect to give up at least
a control and he must not expect id
receive more than it Is worth. The

lished and a crosscut be run to and

ledges yield satisfactory assay returns
at surface and In general present In
dication of making into pay ore at
a not excessive depth.
James L. Mclver, who with George
Long, developed the I'nlted Eastern
estate from a prospect into a bonansa
In less than u. year, has taken over,
tbe Green Quartz group of four claims
from L. K. Arroll. Mclver has two
shifts of miners at work sinking In
the ore body at various points for
tbe purpose of determining the best
point at which to start the main
working shatt. As soon us the shaft
site has been selected a plant of ma
chinery will be installed und the job
of reel mining be on in earnest. The
yeln'. that' is being prospected ean be
traced on the surface for a length of
4560 feet. Armll has opened it at
various points to a nominal depth and
always with satisfactory results In
tbe way of pay ore. Gold values run
an high a $100.00 per ton. Mclver
proposes to find out just how valuable
and exteObive. this ledge is at depth
ized very high, hut the buyer will ttl-
dom pay mncb for his evidence ot
good will.
Besides these larger syndicates,
there are snialler ones, of which we
hear but little. These are largely re
presented by prominent engineers,
wbos business is to be on the lookout
for properties of promise. Here again,
It is largely a matter of the presents
tlon of the case In the proper form to
gain their attention- More mines are
rejected because of the character ot
the first letters or report received
than from any other one source.

tbe worth of his strike be began the
long journey northward to Globe.
Here be talked tbe find over with his

that rtaulted in a few short months
In the most spectacular "rush" In
modern times., Zecendorf of Tucson
staked the venturesome trio t0 grub

to the elusive chronicles of fchbae days,
said that Scbieftiin would next be or
dering a Tombstone. Tbe story has
It that the prospector grimly named

Zecendorf's quip.
When the news of the great rich

world, thousands of the nation's more
venturesome wen went racing south

only, was a mineral bonansa, but also
made possible the concomitant devel

Although three hundred miles from
the nearest railroad point Yuma
the community at the edge of the
Mule mountains grew until within a
few months it contslned more than
ten thousand sentient, hustling Grin

as the Prospector, Epitaph, tbe Nug

theatres, dance halls, gambling palac

itreets In the early eighties were
thronged with the most cosmopolitan
mass of humanity that ever trod
wooden sidewalks. In short, It was a
reminiscence 0' the El Dorado of the
'fifties on the shores of San Franris-
i co Bay. Tbe argonauts of the Golden
Gate had deflected southward and
founded an Industrial empire In re
mote Apache land.
OI course it slumped In time. For
yesrs it was almost deserted. Blsbee
became one of the world'H greatest
copper camps and the old timers re
luctantly trekked over tbe range to
share in the prosperity oi the dis
trict George Warren founded. But in
the early nineties the Tombstone Con
solidated Mines company secured con
trol of about ninety percent of the old
district's mines, installed one of tbe
largest plants In tbe world and gave
tbe city of Tombstone a new lease ot
life. !
tt did not endure, however, and the
once splendid mining ramp dwindled
Into an obqrce village of a few hun

Now Seems Permanent.
But tbe present activity has every
indication of permanency.
The Hunker Hill Mining company, a
subsidiary company of the Phelp
Dodge Rndlcate. bewail i(n work ot
rehabilitation and experimentation In
tlie Tomb-tone district about the mid
die of July, 1814. Today it is working
ten mines and experimenting on a sub
stantial scale in the treatment of the
various ores of the many properties
It Is holding, under the management I
of Dr. G. Grebe.
The Bunker Hill company Is doing
its principal mining southwest of tbf
city ot Tombstone, and the mineral
ised zone it will eventually explore
and mine extends In an easterly and
westerly direction about tw0 miles
northerly and southerly about two
and one-half miles. The holdings of
the company Include the ground of
the former Tombstone Consolidated
Mines company, and several smaller
companies and Individuals.
The company's present operations
are principally confined to claims im
mediately adjacent to the city of
Tombstone and a few contiguous to
these, such as tbe Lucky Cuss, Ore
gon, Prompter, Telephone and Bunker
Hill. Much of this work is limited to
making sate old workings and clean
ing out those Ailed by lessees during
several years preceding the Bunker
Hill company's operations.
Tbe company is now engaged In
making tests In the way of treatment
o( its various ores. The character of
tbe ores is very complex and the
treatment of these ores may necessi
tate application of several processes
such as straight conrentrates com
bined concentration and cyanldation
of tailings from the concentrating ta
bles, and experiments will also be
made with the flotation process for
certain sulphide ores. Some of the
ores that will be treated (the princi

and zinc silicate; manganese ores' car
