MOHAVE COUNTY MINER; KINGMAN. ARIZONA, JANUARY 13. 1912
Arizona.
Gold and Silver in 1911.
Tho jfold production in Arizona in
1011 increased slightly and the silver
output cooiiiler.ibly over the yield of
1!)10, according to V. C. Iluikes, of the
United States Geological Survey. The
greater production of (fold was at
tributable to the minim; of siliceous
lead ores, and copper lead ores, as the
total ;old output from copper ores re
mained about the same as in l!)10.
The principal producers of siliceous
(fold ore were the Tom Reed, Gold
Iload, North Star, Tier, Congress,
-ind Vulture mines, in Mohave, Yuma,
Yavapai, and Maricopa counties.
Tnere Is promise of an increased out
put from the dry placers near Quartz
site, in Yuma County, and from the
vicinity of Ureaterville, in Cochise
County. Placer mining was revived
on Frisco Klver, in the Clifton-Morenci
diitrict of Greenlee County. The
lredj;es in Yavapai County, ou Lynx
Creek and near KirKland, were not
successfully operated. Two dredginjj
plants of the suction type were erect
od on the Colorado River, one in Ari-
zon and the other near Pahreah,
Utah Both plants are said to be
operating and producing.
The increased output of silver de
pends mainly on the increased produc
tion of copper and lead ores. All the
old copper producers at Bisbee,
Clifton, Globe, and Jerome maintain
ed an output which combined made
nearly the same yield of ore as in 1910.
The mines of the Consolidated-Arizona
and the two new producers, the
Miami and Hay, largely made up for
the idleness of the Imperi.il and the
curtailed output of several other prop
erties. However, there wis a large
increase in lead output and a some
wn it larger zinc production, due to
greater yield of lead oro in tho War
ren district of Cochise County and the
zino and lead ores of Mohave County.
Tno largest silver producers of recent
years nave bjan the Commonwealth
a id Tombstone mines. Toe output of
silver diminished in 1911. The Common
wealth is in the hands of new owners
and the Tombstone is worked by les
sees. Near Paradise a 10-ton concentra
tion mill was stirted In November.
Tne 2J-stam ) am ilsjim ition and cy
nidation mill built in 1910 at the Vul
ture mine, in Maricopa County, has
beon in successful operation. New
mill equipment was ordered for the
Big Blue mine and the Monarch mine,
the latter having been Idle three
years. Toe Tom Reed and Gold Road
mines, in Mohave county, produce
guld-bea ring ore, which is treated in
cyanide plants. The former averaged
nearly 05,000$ In gold per month from
the operation of its 20-stamp mill in
1911, and the latter, with a better
grade of ore thin formerly, averaged
nearly the same amount from the
treatment of about 300 tons daily. In
the Union Pass district tho Frisco mill,
recently built, provides for line grind
ing and cyanidatiou.
Two other gold mills, the Gold
Crown and Ruth, were operated. In
Todd Basin tho Oro Plata mill is un
der construction. Tho new owners of
tho Southern Belle mine, in Pinal
County, have ordered a 100-ton mill.
The Eluebabl mine, on Santa Cruz
River, in Santa Cruz County, was re
cently equipped with a tube mill and
cyanide plant. Large bodies of low
grade ore are reported to exist in this
mine. The Congress mine and mill,
in Yavapai County, were closed after
being operated the first three months
of 1911. At the Monica and Rincon
gold mines preparations were mado to
operate. The Tiger mine and mill,
near Crown King, were operated
steadily, producing gold bullion and
lead concentrates. Grading was com
menced for the cyanide mill on the
Venezia mine, in Crook Canyon. In
Yuma County the SalTord Lane mill,
nearVicksburg, was in regular opera
tion, and also tho North Star at Kofa.
According to the preliminary figures
prepared by the Director of the Mint,
which do not include statistics of ex
ports, the production of gold in Ari
zona in 1011 was valued at 2,954,7i05
and that of silver was 1,594,428 line
ounces, valued at 840,935$. Final fig
ures for 1910 gave for Arizona 3,413,
200$ worth of gold and 2,055,700 fine
ounces of silver, valued at 1,434,100$.
Lead and Zinc in
Yavapai Pay Well.
A Prescott dispatch says: George
C Meese, general manager of the Ari
zona Lead and Zinc company, has de
cided to install a reduction plant at
the U. S. Navy mine in Copper Basin
district, and left for Joplin, Mo., on
Sunday to confer with associates to
this end. This decision was reached
ufter ',lie lower levels were pumped
out, which exposed an immense ton
nage of lead and zinc ores ready for
sloping. Added to this are the breasts
of the four drifts showing ore bodies
of workable zinc and richness.
Machinery was recently installed to
begin exploration, and tho initial
movement to this end wastheunwater
ing of all levels, which was accomplish
ed a few days ago, and the mlneralog
ical showing was as had been represent
ed.
While negotiations were under way
for the purchase of this property the
surface workings only were investi
gated and the conditions being favor
able the sale was closed and first pay
ment made.
A shipment was made several days
ago of 80,000 pounds of ore from the old
dumps that accumulated from former
operations conducted for gold and cop
per values. This ore was treated in a
specially designed plant which proved
succcessful. hence the intention to
erect a similar process at the mines,
necessarily follows.
The company is the first to enter
this field on the distinctive basis of
mining for lead and zinc. With the
determinations made in tho past few
months, mining circles are showing
markec interest in this branch of min
ing. There is a belt in this section of
Arizona which has great possibilities
in tho near future in those metals.
It is reported that the 80.000 pounds
shipped to Joplin for a test run, ex
ceed 15$ per ton in net returns, which,
considering the time consumed in sort
ing, wagon and rail transportation and
miscellaneous handling was better
than was expected."
The Live Oak Mine
Discontinues Drilling.
The Live Oak Development Co. has
discontinued churn-drilling operations
and while they may be resumed after
the return from the East of Manager
M. K. McCarthy, it is believed that
future development will be confined to
underground work.
The station on the 900-foot level in
No. 2 shaft, near the western end of
the property, is virtually completed
and it is intended to begin drifting on
the ore this week. At the eastern end
of the ore body, a drift is being driven
from No. 1 shaft, on the fourth level,
and Is reported to be faced in ore.
Raises are being driven from this level
on two of the churn-drill holes. Glob's

Inspiration Starts Con
struction of Dam.
The Inspiration Copper company
has started work on its dam across
Pinal creek lfl miles from the mine.
Tho dam will be the chief source of
water-supply for the concentrator.
It will be built of concrete rubble
masonry will be 75 feet long, and av
erage 25 feet high. There will be a
concrete forebay and i tunnel to c n
nect with tho pumping station.
The method of concentration recom
mended by J. M. Callow is being tested
by him in tlu etparlmanfil mill. It
is designed to be an improvem jnt on
the roughing system as practiced in
many of the large mills of the country
and alms first, by means of graded
crushing to produce a comparatively
small amount of slime and second, by
application of the roughing system
without classification, to remove the
greatest possible amount of copper
from the slime before It is separated
from the sand and sent to the slime
treating machinery, the best o! which
Is notoriously Inefficient in recovering
the metallic content from slime.

Carload Goes to
Needles Smelter.
Messrs. Charles .1. Carr and Charles
Fearney were up this week from their
Leadville property, thirty miles south
of Searchlight and over the line in
California. These gentlemen are
working this property in company with
George Weeks, and have a car of ore
ready for shipment to the Needlfs
smelter. Lew Sherwood, the freighter,
goes down this week to haul the stutt
from tho mine to the Santa Fe at Ibis.
The ore is silver-lead, with very grati
fying values. It is being taken from a
stope which is being worked upward
from the fifty-foot level. There are
two shafts about thirty feet apart,
which are connected by a lateral, and
the ore shows all the way for the thirty
feet. Values are increasing as w rk
progresses, with the silver content be
coming greater. Searchlight Bulletin.
