Public Offices About Occur

Mayor Harrison Issued a proclama
tion making Oct. 12 a holiday, It be
ing the anniversary of the discovery
of America. Tho proclamation fol
lows: "Whereas, Saturday, Oct. 12, Is the
four hundred and twentieth anniver
sary of the discovery of America;
and
"Whereas, That date has been set
npurt by law for the celebration of
the discovery of this country;
"Therefore, 1, Carter H. Harrison,
mayor of the city of Chicago, do here
by declare Saturday, Oct. 12, a legal
holiday, and all departments of the
city government are ordered closed on
that date, with tho exception of the
police, Arc, health and electrical de
partments, which will remain open for
the transaction of necessary busi

tion at llrst, but this wus soon swept
away.
If tho council grants tho permit tho
company will build a ftibway from Its
present storo to Its proposed new one
at tho southwest corner of N. Wabash
avenuo and E. Washington, directly
across tho street from Its existing
building.
Tho proposed tunnel will occupy all
of tho spaco under W. Washington
street, between lloldon court and N.
Wabash avenue. It will bo about 150
feet long and about GO feet wide.
Definite action on tho construction
of a brldgo over tho Dralnago Canal
nt S. California avenuo was taken at
tho meeting of the engineering com
mltteo of tho Sanitary District. A
subcommittee, consisting of Trustees
Williams, Ileaty and Sullivan, was ap
pointed to Hud out tho amount of tho
expense to bo borne by tho city. Al
derman Charles Martin of tho Fifth
Ward told tho committee that tho
city had $200,000 available for brldgo
construction purposes on California
avenue..
"It Is the Intention of tho city to
construct three bridges on California
nvenue," said Alderman Martin in ad
dressing tho committee. "Ono is to
be constructed over tho west fork of
this west branch of tho Chicago River,
ono over tho old Illinois & Michigan
Cnnnl, and ono over tin Dralnago
Cannl."
