All xnrt-driiplng fnbrltt lend them
selves to tlii' new styles In afternoon
frocks licoiiiMi' Btyle ti'iidencli't In
theso nnd evening gowns are nil toward
fabrics that fall softly iilmut tliu II (.'lire
mid make for slender lines. There ure
u guild many materials tluit make
drapery of this description; certain
weaves In sntln nnd fmiliinls, new
weaves In other silks, chllTon cloth nnd
crepes mid all the fine nets and luces.
These two last mentioned, niiiile tip
with satin or georgette, are accredited
ns tho most fusclnatltii: afternoon
gowns ln nil the fnlr compnny of
beautiful frocks for summer.
Two lovely examples of new gowns
for afternoon wear bear out the asser
tions of the admirers of lace and soft
draping fabrics, and nro shown In the
picture above. Starting out with luce
nnd u supple, figured silk, the gown at
the left adds to these advantages an
orlglnnl and simple deslcn. and when
these things are Joined they spell
distinction. I.oo'Vng at HiW frock one
wonders that there lire not more like
It. W.sbroldereil net makes the short
yoke nnd the tup of the sleeves and
from this the body of the gown Hows
to the feet. A wide frill of lace fulls
In a very scant tlmince about the bot
tom of the skirt. The timiiageinent of
the waist line Is novel nnd beautiful,
with narrow lumd of the fabric looped
over In a loewe girdle at each side.
A more elaborate frock, shown nt the
right, Is of lace iloiinclng and georgette
with the luce used for the upper part
of the bodice and for the sleeves. It
fulls over the front of the skirt In three
tiers and ut the buck In a full short
tunic. An Important Item In this dress
Is the narrow girdle of grosgrnln rlln
lion with plcot edge that has four hang
ing ends, llnlsbed with looped heads.
Two of these ends hang to the ankle,
and two are shorter. No one should
overlook bends and the new bend
fringes In planning evening and aft
ernoon frocks. This model Is very
narrow about the nnkle but draped so
us to admit sufllclent freedom In walk
Ing. It Is fashionably uneven at the
bottom and Is worn over a thin silk
slip.

The wedding gown may bo splendid,
or It may bo simple, or anywhere be
tween so long us It Is chic, and the
veil, or other headdress, must at leiiRt
measure up to It, Long custom has
resulted In an unwritten law that the
gown must have sleeves and must not
bo decolletto; except for these vague
limitations tho bride has little to bum
per her In choice of Myles. Hut It Is
a good thing to bear In mind that the
best of all wedding gowns nro simple
In design, however Intricate and ex
qulslto In finish they may be.
Shown nbovo Is a wedding gown,
from a nationally famous designer,
thnt merits Its description an superb.
Yet tho design could hardly bo less
simple. It has u skirt and long square
train of duchesso satin, with n chiffon
tunic over It, embroidered In crystal
bends. Thcro Is n coronet of pearl
heads with u chalnstriip of pearls, that
supports u wonderful luco veil which
falls over Hie train. Thero tire angel
sleeves of chiffon nnd a long htrund
of small pearls about the neck. The
bouquet Is of lilies of the valley nnd
white orchids. This is u hpleudld con
ception of the brldnl costume but there
nre visions of bridal loveliness In which
white daisies replace orchids and tulle
vies with rich lace, In less regal but
not less beautiful costumes. Even
when the matter of expense Is not
reckoned with, tulle, more often than
luce, Is chosen for tho voll.
Crepo georgette, exqulslto nnd beau
tiful In Itself, Is perfect as n fabric
for tho wedding gown, whether It Is
to be simple or otherwise. Nets nnd
laces are, and always lmvo been, ap
propriate for It, draped over satin or
other foundations.
