There Are Many Fancy Suits
Bft &Jp3Kp?tf i$ yf fpaKtR .y&gy8gttsKKS5EMeHeeemeraW
A stroll through establishments,
Whoso styles wo know to bo authorita
tive soon verlfle the nsertlon made
by manufacturers that tailored suits
nro growing fancier. That Is tho first
Impression to bo gathered from almost
any llpliiy. But ono must not draw
conclusions too quickly. It has como
to tho plnco where tliero nro several
distinct types of the tailored suit, In
cluding tho knock-about suit, tho walk
ing suit nnd tho promenade .suit (which
must lto another name for what wo
have known as tho formal suit.) Tiio
knock-about nnd walking Milts will
please those who nro wedded to severe
tnllor-mnde, whllo promenade and
formal suits nro for those who like
departures from this type.
Probably tho influence of French
Ideas has promoted tho success of tho
fancier tailored suits, for tho bevcro
typo has never been n favorlto with
Paris. Where there Is no place for n
gay or frivolous or dnlnty touch to ap
parel, French designers seem to feel
bumpered; they do not llko the typo
of suit that attends strictly to tho
business of being practical and well
made. They delight In unexpected lit
tles decorative touches that havo no
reason for existing, except to bo In
teresting and good looking.
All tho now glove finish fabrics and
their nnmo Is legion proiuoto tho
cause of fancier suits. Duvetyn,
velours, duvet and their like, nro very
soft with surfaces that vary, hut aro
never hard. Close behind them trlco-
tine and gabardine lend themselves to
promenade suits by their texture. A
line example In u trlcotino model for
fall and winter wear Is shown In tho
accompanying picture. It shows al
legiance to tho Int decrees for longer
skirts and coats nnd presents odd em
placements of material on tho skirt
and coat, with braid, buttons, nnd but
tonholes cleverly managed to elnborato
both. Tho collar Is unusual with
strnlcht rovers that extend over tho
shoulder nnd widen at tho back Into
n small square cape. Tho coat 19 open
to tho waistline nt tho front, ranking
plenty of opportunity for n fnncy
hlouso or vetee. Tho choker of fur Is
n separate nlfalr. Tho choker collar
Is everywhere present, but Is often
convertible nnd N either of fur or fur
fabric or of tho material In tho suit.
Belts nro narrow and may be taken
off so that tho Milt Is worn with or
without them. Occasionally n suit Is
shown with two belts, ono of tho fab
ric and ono of leather. Not nil coats
nro long. There nro those of tho short
rlpplo vnrlety that seem to he liked
best In tho dressier suits. Their bodies
nro somllUtcd. Sleeves nro long nnd
plnln with occasional narrow turned
back cuffs for n small pointed Hare,
and skirts are ankle length and only
moderately narrow, tho linbblo variety
never having achieved success among

Tho goddess of the looms must hnvo
lingered about American silk milts
when designers wcro planning this
season's ribbons. And who wns In n
hnppy nnd opulent mood, for tho ut
most In weaving hns blossomed In
ribbons that aro nil tho way from gay
to gorgeous. Tho richness of nu
tumn's colorful days, with sunshine
nnd moonshine, nil aro rcllcctcd In
hroended ribbons heavy with gold nnd
silver threads and very brilliant In
sheen nnd color. So much beauty
lures ono away from tho considera
tion of its price which Is vory high.
But only small quantities of tho
most gorgeous ribbons nppcnr In any
npparel or dress accessories, except
for evening dresses. In theso wldo
mctnl-hralded ribbons aro used with
somo generosity. Mostly tho wido and
brilliant ribbons nro used for ranking
shopping bags nnd purses, In tho
crowns of hats or in sashes on hats
nnd for Tests In dresses and suits. In
evening dresses of tullo or crepo or
lnco they innko brilliant panels or
girdles and occasionally n handsomo
afternoon frock looks to them for
a touch of splendor In tho girdle.
Hut bags nnd purses account for
moro yards of ningtiKlcent ribbon than
other accessories. Between now nnd
Christmas there will bo n lively busi
ness at tho ribbon counter whero
mountings for bags nro sold along
with tho ribbon to mnko them. In
tho picture above a purse and n bag
aro shown. The long purso Is n black
satin brocaded in silver. And tho bag
Is In brilliant colors striped with
black, mounted on a black celluloid
Tho story of plain satin ribbons, for
llttlo bngs and numberless other
trifles that women love, Is much long
er than thnt of tho splendid brocades.
Them aro Innumerable trinkets mado
of ribbon. A llttlo face powder bag
of satin ribbon Is shown In tho picture.
It has n smnll round mirror In tho bot
tom nnd narrow satin ribbon handles
thnt draw up nnd closo tho top. It
serves to carry n small box of powdor
and n convenient puff.
Hair ribbons for llttlo girls nro
shown In many pretty striped vari
eties nnd tnffetn remains tho favorlto
for hair bows, which with bags, keep
n gny stream of ribbons flowing over
tho ribbon counter.
