Rush periods on transportation lines occur
when many passengers find it necessary
to use the service at the same time. To
avoid such periods, people who can do
so conveniently use the lines at other
times as much as possible.
There are rush periods in telephone
offices. They are not so evident to the
public because those supplying the
service work in central offices "behind
the scopes. " From 9 to 11 comes the
morning "peak" of the load which
follows the arrival of business men at
their offices. At the same time their
wives at home are shopping by tele
phone or making appointments. The
evening "peak," while variable, usually
comes between 7 and 8 in residence
Subscribers can assist greatly in making
telephone service satisfactory by making
calls whenever possible at other times
than during rush hours. This enables
the Telephone Company to handle the
l"peak" with the greatest possible
