Eleven thousand five hundred fire alarm calls, or
more than sixty-five percent of the total number
for 1018, nnd a still larger percent of the 185,000
police calls were made over the wires of the Chicago
The City of Chicago has its own system of wires but
oflicial announcement was recently made that it
is in bad condition and must be rebuilt and ex
tended at a cost of 2,500,000.
The further development of the Chicago Telephone
Company's service is therefore in effect an exten
sion of the Fire Alarm and Police Call system and
an additional protection against fire and crime.
Telephone Rates must be fair alike to the subscribers
and the Company.
They must be sufficient to maintain in good condi
tion, nnd operate the property, which incidentally,
is your Fire Alarm and Police Call system, and
pay the Wages of Capital dividends and interest
on securities given to investors who furnished the
money to build the plant.
More than fifty million dollars will be needed in the
next ten years for telephone growth in Chicago,
and it will be forthcoming from the people who
have money to invest only after they nre made
sure that their principal and interest will be safe
in our enterprise.
The Rates Must be Right
