FASHION POINTS.
WHAT THE LADIES WILL WEAR
THIS SUMMER.
New Shades of Colors—Styles in Head-
G-ear—The Latest in Waistcoats and
Other Articles of Apparel.
Potocki is a light Bordeaux red.
Condole is a heliotrope leaning toward
a plain lilac.
Saida is a green ranging between com
mon green and olive.
Sapphire, turquois, and bleu toile are
likely to be much worn.
Chimay is the name for a bluish gray
cloth with a greenish hue.
Blue colors will be in great favor next
winter, and it is said that they will be
leading.
Grand moyal, or fin dv sieele, as it is
called, is a reddish lilac, and indie a new
bluish green of an elegant hue.
The accordion-plaited peasant cloak is
new, the fullness being attached to a
cloth yoke, either plain or braided.
The latest blue shade in the market is
called Jeanne d'Arc. It is of a light
though intense hue, and very becom
ing.
Silk gloves fit almost as beautifully
as those of suede, and long-wristed mitts
are donned with evening toilets at sum
mer resorts.
Guerrita is the name for a green
yellow, much lighter than the lightest
olive. This shade will scarcely find fa
vor, as it is not pretty.
Ladies of mature years wear costumes
of gitana brown, combined with the
new blodine, which as nearly as possi
ble reproduces the tresses of a blonde
beauty.
Jackets of English hunting pink are
donned for coaching or hunting parties,
and, with their brilliantly polished gilt
buttons, are altogether smart and fetch
ing garments.
The top-coat may be worn with the
prevailing sailor hat of straw or light
felt, but a Marguerite gown should be
seen on the street with a picturesque
hat of mull or straw trimmed with Mar
guerites or daisies to complete the effect.
A very attractive hat in white fancy
straw braid, faced with shirred white
net, is trimmed with an imposing bow of
velvet ribbon, three inches wide, in moss
green, posed at the back of the crown,
and holding a full garland oi purple
heather, which is twined around the
■«rown.
Parisian women are seen at the races,
.in country houses, and at the seaside
i resorts attired in gowns of black Her
nani gros-grain gauze or Neapolitan
vorepeover slips of satin duchesse, taffeta
or surah —the lustrous sheen beneath
heightening the effect of the diaphan- >
©us fabric.
The gauntlet cuff has reappeared on 1
suede or dogskin gloves, and is much
liked, as it is so readily drawn over the
ifull sleeves of summer gowns. It is ad
mirably adapted for tennis, yachting
jtnd horseback-riding, and is often made
-oi wash leather, which does not shrink j
by.contact with soap and water.
.Single and double-breasted habit
basques, with pointed fronts and dress
backs, of becoming length, are among
the leading elegancies of the season.
Any of the pretty woolens suitable for
street wear, may be fashionably made
np in them, white serge, camel's hair,
etc.. being particularly dainty.
Another pleasing specialty of the sum
aser is the vest, a real waistcoat, with a
narrow rolling collar and little turning
lapels. It may be made of as rich ma
terials as the wearer desires, but the
most popular fabric just now for travel
ing and morning wear, is what is called
canvas gingham, or pique, showing a
small irregular or regular check.
Black lace hats are as much the vogue
us ever. Parisians are varying their ap
pearance by having them trimmed with
the particular blossoms which happen
at* be most common at the time. In
riQoM way lilies-of-the-valley and forget
me-nots were superseded by lilacs and
labarums, and these again by pansies
and iris, flowers which are reproduced
in a variety of delicate gray-blue, violets,
and mauves. Now the peonies and
guelder roses are coming forward, and
then these will be followed by the June
roses. Some of the prettiest of the
. black lace hats are made up of rows of
alternating with bands of
v black crinoline.
ADVERTISING THE STATE.
A Special Pamphlet to be Issued by the
State Board of Trade.
At a recent meeting of the state board
'Oi trade, an organization of which the
Los Angeles chamber of commerce is a
member, General Chipinan offered the
following resolutions:
Whereas, It is of great importance to
ascertain and make up at the earliest
practicable moment the statistics
gathered by the United States census
relative to the state of California during
the past decade, and that the secretary
he directed to communicate with W. H.
Mills, the vice-president of the state
board of trade, now in Washington, and
request him to wait upon Hon. Robert
C. Potter, superintendent of the census,
and obtain permission and arrange to
Jhave made copies of the official returns
-of such information as may concern the
welfare of this state, provided that such
copies or tabulated data cost not to ex
ceed $250.
Retolved, That the superintendent of
the census be, and is hereby requested
to afford to this board such aid as may
be consistent with his duty to the public,
with a view to promote the objects
.herein expressed.
TLeT were carried unanimously.
The'following was introduced:
Whereas, There is pressing need for
a pamphlet publication which shall in
compact form present the resources, in
dustries, general and special features of
California, and its desirableness for resi
dence, and as the home of the indus
trious of all classes, and that such pub
lication should embrace the whole state
by counties, giving the special industries
and aptitudes of counties and regions,
Resolved, That the committee on agri
culture and industrial resources be di
rected to enter upon the work of prepar
ing the material for such pamphlet as is
contemplated herein.
Mr. Boggs, of Colusa, spoke in favor
of the last resolution, characterizing it
as a most excellent suggestion. Most of
the pamphlets now in circulation re
garding California did not fill the bill.
A few of them were misleading, being
gotten up by real estate agents for the
purpose of booming. He would suggest
the addition of a map.
Colonel Irish, in the chair, stated that
Mr. Boggs's suggestion of a map was a
most excellent one, as he was informed
that many of the educational institu
tions of other states were using the map
issued by the board. The idea of getting
out this work was one to be commended.
There wae a work issued by the Morning
THE LOS ANGELES HERALD; MONDAY MORNING, JUNE 23, 1890.
Call some time ago which covered the
whole state and reflected credit on the
enterprise of that paper. In fact, all the
Sfln Francisco papers were lending their
aid to such a purpose.
E. W. Mashn supported the resolu
tion, saying that the trouble with the
counties was in their issuing separate
pamphlets, often, as Mr. Boggs said,
misleading. He hoped the resolution
would pass, as there was need of a
pamphlet giving succinct information
to those desiring it. While traveling in
Minnesota lately he looked in vain for
books giving information about Cali
fornia. He found out all he wanted
about Washington and Oregon.
The resolution was adopted.
An Unlucky Blunder.
One of the reminiscences which the
queen loves to recall is of the time when
! Louis Napoleon was her guest aboard
I the royal yacht Victoria and Albert. The
j French monarch praised the sumptuous
: furnishings of the vessel, and con
fessed that he had never felt able
to afford so great a luxury. "But for
you, madame," said he, gallantly, "you
are the queen of the seas!" This com
pliment tickled the queen mightily. The
title was a new one and it hit her fancy.
Victoria is a great stickler at formality ;
she will not tolerate anything like" a
breach of custom. The custom is that
whenever the queen visits a town she
shall, before leaving that town, knight the
i mayor thereof. The form of dubbing a
knight is exceedingly simple. The can
| didate kneels before her majesty; she
asks his name; he gives it simply
"Andrew Jones," or whatever it may
be; the queen touches him with a
sword and says: "Rise Sir Andrew-
Jones." On one occasion the queen
was about to knight the mayor
of one of the smallest cities she
had been visiting. The poor fellow was
scared almost out of his wits. He was
so nervous that when the queen asked
his name he answered: "Mr. Thomas
Hopkins." Whereupon her majesty,
incensed at this breach of custom, and
making no allowance for the poor man's
trepidation, exclaimed, "Rise, Mr.
Thomas Hopkins," and, throwing the
sword aside, sailed indignantly out of
the room.—[Chicago News, London Let

has written and is about to publish a
book of historical, political and personal
observations and reminiscences, under
the title, "Echoes from Niagara." Mrs.

American politics and had friendly rela
tions with the picturesque and "heroic
figures of that time. Her chronicle is
said to be "as good as a novel."
