The olive tree will not bear a tempe rature below 21 deg. or 22 defj. Fahren- I heit, and can not be grown in Europe [ above the latitude of 4o deg. There waa ian olive orchard in the vicinity of Mar seilles which had brought to the owner an income of 10,000 francs in a single year, and seemed likely to do so again in the autum of 1792, when one night the mercury went down to 10 deg below free zing, and in the morning all hope of a harvest was gone. The localities in Italy where the olive grows best are Sicily, Calabria, the Abruzzi, Puglia, Lucca and the Riviera. The best table oil exported to America is from the province of Lucca. The olives prepared for eating come from Spain, I those of Italy being inferior for this use, i although eaten by the lower classes. The olives of the plain yield more fruit than I those of the hills, but the oil is less de i licate. A gentle slope, well sheltered j from cold winds, is the most favorable j I situation. In moderate climates the ex- I posure should be to the east; in war i mer ones to the west and north, while ]on the utmost northern limit only a full I southern exposure will content the tree. It prefers a dry and rather stiff soil; the I fat plain makes it corpulent anil short I lived. One hundred kilograms of olives fresh ly picked from trees in good condition 1 ought to return a fifth of their weight in ! virgin oil. As an article of food, oil has a most i important place. The Italian workman : finds bread and oil and wine an ample mid-day meal: if he can add thereto a salad or an onion, it is a feast. In the cuisine of Southern Italy oil takes the place of butter, and is by many consid ered more healthful than any animal | grease. Odds and Ends. Erastrus Wiman, worth $2,000,000, be i gan work on a farm at 50 cents a week. The Crown Princes, of Denmark is the tallest Princes in the world. Her height j is announced to be (i feet 3 inches. Young Grant, Allan Arthur and one o | the Garfield boys met the other day in Philadelphia. Neither knew the other ; by sight. : The insanity which has clouded the ] intellect of John Ruskin is a sad ending to the life of one who has exercised such an influence on art and literature. Mrs. John G. Curtis, a well known i New York lady, has organized an orches tra among members of poor families and | gives entertainments for charitable pur ' poses. In a personal letter to a friend Arch | bishop Corrigan, says the New York j Sun, who is now in Europe, told recent ly of the great enjoyment with which jhe witnessed the performance of the Passion Play at Oberammergau. I Mrs. M . Edith Howcott of New Or , leans probably owns more real estate 1 than any other Southern woman. She has in her own right over 50,000 acres of selected timber lands in Louisiana and Mississippi, and is still buying. The young Countess de Biron, i«V Pc Lessens, drives about Paris in her $1,800 ; victoria, dressedin white paneled silk: with hand-painted flowers. The white para sol she carries in the Bois is white net gathered over a gilded frame and orna mented with a Dresden china handle, the cost of which would pay for a,.whole tea set. FIVE CENTS A LINE. By the employment of proper inhalations in the form of medicated vapor (not steam or spray) we are able to produce immediate and direct action upon the diseased surface in the pharynx and tlie nasal passages, for air will find its way into the remotest and intricate cavities, where it is utterly impossible to make fluid applications. By these means nearly every case of catarrh, throat diseases, bronchitis and the early stages of consumption can be permanently cured. Persons desiringtreatment by this system of practice can use the remedies at home as well as at our office, aud whioh will cause no incon venience or hindrance from business whatever. I have seen so many of these cases cured that I do not consider any case hopeless unless both lungs are seriously involved. Even then the Compound Oxygen aud other inhalations aid us in dissolving the mucus and in contracting and healing the cavities, which nothing else can do with tlie same success. The very best refereuces from those already cured. CONSULTATION FREE. Those who desire to consult with me in regard to their cases had better call at the office for an examination, but if impossible to visit the office personally can write for a copy of my medical treatise, containing a list of questions.
