12 THE SPIRIT OF UNREST. IT SEEMS AT PRESENT TO PERVADE THE RELIGIOUS WORLD. Ihe Attack of Father Ignatius on lt«T. Heber Newton—Controversy Between Two Catholic Bishops—Why T»r. Bridg man Resigned His Charge. A strange spirit of unrest seems to have taken possession of tbe religious world of late. Eminent pastors are questioning the Inspiration of Holy Writ, denying the doc trine of eternal punishment and casting doubt upon the resurrection of Christ. Professors of theology are giving the broad est constrnction to creeds; church dissen sions are rife over foundational truths, and a veritable battle of beliefs is in progress. Foremost in the strife for the old faith and customs is Father Ignatius, the Prot estant monk of Wales. This gentleman claims to preach the gospel pure and un defiled, and it shocked him to find men of other ideas in charge of Episco pal churches in America. Certain utterances of the Key. Dr. Heber Newton, one of the most eloquent divines of New York, aroused the indignation of Fa ther Ignatius, whose coifed fol lowers in Wales recently went over In a body to tho Roman Catholic church. The monk saw danger to the church at large should Dr. Newton remain a promiment member. He publicly denounced the "hypocrisy" of the preacher and called upon Bishop Potter to discipline him. Dr. Newton's offense, as formulated by Father Ignatius, consists in his alleged denial of the incarnation and resurrection of Christ. He is also said to have expressed the opinion that there is no need for the miraculous conception of the divine word. Dr. William R. Huntington, rector of Grace church, who questioned the accu racy of the monk's statement of Dr. New ton's position, and appealed for tolerance HEBER NEWTON. 1 to a large extent, views religion as a system of economical insurance, a 'cheap defense for the nation,' and regards the priest sim ply as a member of the moral police." * * * Dr. Newton has conducted himself with dignity during the hubbub. In a sermon he said the massacre of St. Bartholomew was one of the atrocities committed through faith, which "has also burned 11- braries, closed schools, anathe matized science, martyred philos ophers, w hi te washed the walls on which art has ■drawn her glori ous visions, staid the progress of the human race through centu ries, nnd wrought incalculable evil to civilization." He pleaded for a wider charity, "the corner stone of true Christianity," and said the chief regard of organized Protestantism, equally with Romanism, was not truth in itself, but truth as held by the fathers, and delivered by them to their children—that Is, "truth arrested, fixed, stereotyped, final." There is also warfare in a certain section of the Catholic church. This, however, is not a dispute as to doctrine, but what ap pears to be a personal quarrel between two bishops openly carried on by the Rochester BISHOP RYAN. Bought to create division among the priests and people in a malicious, unchristian spirit. To prevent serious injury to the faith and morals of the young he protested against the circulation of The Catholic Union in the diocese, as it was "not fit reading for decent and pure minded chil dren," and was "a constantly recurring source of scandal to many, running into sin and shame." Bishop Ryan, of Buffalo, refused to make any answer to this pastor al. "The Bishop of Rochester," be said, "undoubtedly felt justified in writing the letter, and with his action this diocese has .nothing to do. I have no quarrel with Bishop McQuaid." Baptist circles have been stirred to their depths by the defection of ons of their leading pastors on tbe all absorbing topic of eternal punish ment for sinners. The Rev. Dr. C. DeW. Bridgman recently resigned the pastorate of the Madison Ave nue Baptist church, New York, because his views thereon were in conflict with the general belief of the church. In a re cent sermon he expressed his firm conviction that the doctrine of hell is directly opposed to Christ's teaching; that the hell against which tbe Lord warned mankind is just tbe Inward depravity which selfishness and unbelief and unfaithfulness are certain to breed. Dr. Da Cos ta, in upholding Father Ignatius, declared that "the church today is badly entangled in the toils of Satan. "What pair do yon want, Joslah?" in quired Mrs. Chugwater. "Any pair, if they are only mates. Here's an odd gray sock and an odd black one, and down here in the corner is an old pair of last summer's socks, with holes in the toes. I don't see why my things can't be kept iv order, the same as other men's." "If you had only told me" "Told you! Have I got to run to you, Mrs. Chugwater, for every little thing I want? Is that your idea about the way to carry on the household business? If you'd just take trouble enough to pile things in here so I can ii ml 'em when I want 'em it would save me lots of bother." "Josiah, if you will let me" "Now, there's no use of your getting ex cited about this thing. If you know where I can get a pair of halfway decent socks just say so, nnd I'll hunt 'em up, and if you don't know and will have the kindness to put the fact in plain English I'll go out and buy a pair. That's aIL" "If you hadn't tumbled these things all out of shape, Jcsiah" "Tumbled them out of shape, have I? What's a bureau drawer for, anyway? Is it to hide things in, madam? If I don't find what I want on top haven't I got to look down under, I'd like to know? Any woman that will -pack and jam a bureau drawer full of things, and arrange them so you've got to dig and claw all through the whole business to get what you're after and then don't get it, hasn't got the right idea about arranging a man's haberdashery. If you know where my socks are, Mrs. Chugwater, why don't you say so, instead of standing around like a stoughton bottle and doing nothing?" "I could have found them for you in a minute and saved you all this trouble if you had given me a chance," said Mrs. Chugwater, as she straightened out the taugle in the drawer and brought to view from one of the bottom corners five pairs of clean socks. "When you want anything of this kind hereafter, Josiah, if you'll just let me know" "The trouble with you, Samantha," growled Mr. Chugwater, as he jerked a pair from the top of the pile and went off to one corner to put them on, "is that you talk too much."—Chicago Tribune. "He'll ask you up to the barn to talk it over." "I see." "But don't you go. Instead of that make a bee line for your buggy, climb in and scoot your hoss as fast as 'he kiu go for the next six miles." Bronchitis is a disease of the mucous mem brane of the air passage, and la one ol the most common of the pulmonary affections. Cbronle bronchitis more often appears later lv life. When a cold settles on the lungs the disease either ends lv bronchitis or pneumonia. If it ends ln bronchitis It usually passes off as a cold on the chest, and still the patient does not feel entirely well. He feels tired and languid, and is Incapable of taking his usual amount of exercise, and experiences a shortness of breath with more or less warmth ln the palms of the hands. Soon after this a cough appears, ac companied by an expectoration of thick mu cous, followed by a hectic flush, loss of flesh and strength, and night sweats continue, when tbe patient assumes all the appearance of hav ing a genuine case of consumption. But this is simply catarrh of the lungsor chronic bron chitis. The patient usually dies from exhaustion and suffocation, being unable to expectorate the mucous which accumulates in the passage leading to the lungs, which ln some cases is •tlcky and small ln quantity, but more com monly copious, of a light straw or yellowish gieen. Dry Bronchitis—This disease, the very oppo site of tbe above, is a very common affection. Very many people, who regard themselves as quite healthy, are today under its influence, and are slowly but surely becoming the vic tims of this treacherous complaint. This Is the most insidious of all pulmonary diseases. There may at first be a slight, hacking cough and an expectoration of a bluish white mu cous. And herein lies the danger. This mu oous, inhabiting the air cells of the lungs, be ing difficult to raise, after a time becomes solidified, permanently obstructing portions of the lungs, causing ihortness of breath and m * feeling of oppression on the chest, particularly after meals or ou slight exertion. After a time the cough becomes more severe and comes on in paroxysms, and as the shortness of breath in creases it almost assumes the character of asthma The mucous membrane also be comes more and more thickened, which arises from the frequent fresh colds, and the patient at last becomes fully aware of tbe terrible changes that have taken place and the inevit able results that are to follow. Without courage and perseverance nothing is curable, but with these, aided with our Medi cated Inhalations and Compound Oxvgna Treatment, Bronchitis can be cured even after the lungs are extensively diseased.
