There was a comparatively slow Increase by 1900 to 803 In the South, or at the rate of 1SJI per cent, and to 3,068 in the rest of the country, or at the rate of 7.2 per cent. There are now In the South 2,048, only forty-seven fewer than the number In the whole country in 1SS0. The Increase In number between 1900 and 1912 was at the rate of 155.4 per cent In the South and 75J per cent in the rest of the country. The greater rate of "increase in tho South reflects the wonderful develop ment of the past few years In agricul ture, mining, lumbering, manufacturing, and commerce in that section. Believing in the continued growth of traffic along its lines and to provide for its prompt and efficient handling, the Pennsylvania railroad system, compris ing all the line from New York at one end and Chicago and St. Louis at the other, has requested from freight car builders bids with a view to the pur chase of 12,300 new freight cars inviting a probable expenditure of some tlB, 000.000. Of the foregoing cars, 10,000 will be ad ditions to' the systems equipment, while 2.300 will represent replacements. As these replacements however, will In all cases be cars of 100,0000 pounds capacity, whereas the worn out cars had only an average pounds of 60,000 pounds, there will be a net addition to the carrying capacity oi tne company oi about 40, 0(i0 pounds per car. The replacements and addition will represent a net Increase in the carry ing capacity of the company of 546,000 tons. Although those cars will be purchased by the Pennsylvania system as a whole, the lines East will utilize 5,000 of the steel gondola cars, 1,300 wooden side gondola cars, and 1,000 refrigerator cars. The lines west of Pittsburgh will use 3.000 gondola, 1,000 wooden side gondola, (VX) refrigerator, and KO box cars. These purchases will be In addition to orders placed In 1912, for a total of about 120,000.000 worth of freight cars, comprising 9,875 additions to equipment and 8.000 replacements. During four years, 1909 to 1912 Inclusive, the" company added to Its freight equipment a net In crease In carrying capacity of 1.3S9, 370 tons. The purpose of the new equipment now to be ordered Is that shippers may have equipment available without delay for the normal Increase in traffic to be expected on the Pennsylvania. HEN the boat grated on the beach below the Cloch Ferry Inn, my mind was full of Bordeaux's story. Was there a word of truth in It? There was about it the same air of fantasy which was characteristic of Bordeaux him self. Yet, I knew Mariposa was the daughter of Don John, and he had been the first to utter the name. And had I not met the man on a barren Islet, and had he not spoken of La Trinidad, and of Mr. Macmurtrle, who had been our own family adviser for thirty years? I was glad that I had not spoken of our Intimacy with Macmurtrle, for there lay my chance to testing the truth of the strange 'narrative. If it should be true, and If Mariposa was Indeed a lady of high degree, would she forget Rorle of 'the kilt? Would sho forget the cows and the milk-paths and the bannocks under her plaid, and all that we suffered together? Something told me. no her cold, little fingers snuggling In the palm of my hand as I helped her to the lowland shore. It I wasn doubt, ui anyooay for I am come and the thought that I might have noth. lng to match with her station stirred a stupid feeling of Jealous resentment, But the Joy of being-free and having Mariposa safe once more soon chased away my gloom, although, from that w or the tale which he told In his strange Highland English. "Ta chief she was tnkkln' a. dram when ta regent's men purst In. Tav got pehlnd ta toor, which 1m always on ta sneck for ta honest peoples from ta Hielands, and tay shot ta polt. For If sne tied, ta Mac donald cry troo ta keyhole be. would stick his sklan dhu troo my powels.next time he haff ta pleasure to me meeting me." "The .merciless Macdonald." mur dered Bordeaux, passing another slice of bacon to Mariposa. ''And then, good host?" "Ann t'en." casneH Dalalelsh. wioing tho presplratlon from his fat face, "tay let me go, and she swear to herself she woot never again nar a fugitive peoples in my house any more. And py tiss time ta Macdonald's men haf ta boat out at ta pack door, ijulst as ta regent's men preak ta fine Ptlt for which my father. Tuncan Talgleish, paid more tan 'saxpence. And he kll't seven of ta re gent's men and trot away In ta smoke. And when ta regent's men wake up. ta Macdonalds was halt-way ofer ta firth to Pute." i "And did Pharoah not go after them V I asked, amused at tbe man's antics. Dalglelsh stopped as if ne naa oeen struck by the Macdonald's sklan dhu. "Who ta tevll , was Pharaoh?" he sputtered, very red in the face. Mariposa burst out In her old wild peal of rippling laughter, and I Joined in her merriment with many a childish roar, while Bordeaux and the host sol emnly stared from each other to us. "Ta peds will be ready," said the of fended Dalglelsh stiffly. So you can picture us presently all asleep, as only happy, tired people can sleep after a good meat. Mariposa was given the room ben the house, while bordeaux and I occupied the Dig Ded set back In the kitchen waU. It had not been our intention to re main long at the Ferry inn. The place was the inevitable landing place of pos sible pursuers, and our hope was to reach Glasgow that night. If the wind held out of tne nonn. uur oner stay was cut shorter, however, by my own uphappy notoriety. It will be remem bered that there had always been a fer ry between the Cloch and Kllellan. I was awakened by a voice saying, "Aye, that will be Borie Maclean," and a sense nf some one standing over me. I opened my eyes and looked up into the face of Roderick Dow. whom I had last seen after Mariposa procured bis safety from the rope and the rowan tree. "Hay, Rorle," said he. In a kindly way, "will it be yerself? And how did ye get away? And where will tho braw lass be?" I told him briefly. The open-mouthed silence with which he listened to my story was suddenly broken by a crash of a man's, fist on tbe kitchen table and the voice of Dalglelsh raised in a howl like that of a dog In pain. "I will not have it! she will not have It!' he bellowed. "Get awa' oot o' ma hoose every mon an wumman o ye!" I was out of bed by this time, but, at tho noise, Mariposa appeared, fresh from sleep. The Cloch Ferry, too, was doing a fine business with the western Highlands, although old Galglelsh, whose ancestors had run It for two centuries, declared that Scotland and all therein had been sold to the cursed Sassenach But this man was a gloomy coward, as we presently found. He helped us beach the argosy, with his dirty white apron tucked around his waist and hit face perspiring with excitement, de spite the cold. "It was a praw day, whatever!" he cried. "But ye hae cam nane ower soon, she'll be thlnkin. It's In for a fearfu' storrum. Ta snaw has been clootin' ower Penmore sin' yesterday an' to moon las' nlcht was gey un canny. As a lad I hnd oftn gazed across the firth at this "other side" and Imagined that It was that part of the world which was peopled with all the creatures that did not exist In Cowal. Mariposa and I hnd often fancied It as the land of milk and honey, and the firth as the Red sea which the Israelites crossed. Althnugh we hnd grown out of such childish hollefs. I am sure both of us felt a little of the old enchantment of vouth at finding ourselves there. I looked across the table at Mariposa, and by thr1 pleas'iro and excitement In her face. I am sure she thought with me that the food tasted better, and the milk had honev In It. and presently there would be a shower of magic manna. This Is a chlldlth thing to set down, nerhaps. but those who, as children, have gnzed nnd speculated on a dis tant shore and at Inst set foot on It, will enter into the stilrlt of It. The host helped enliven the nlace with a certain romance. There wns a great door between the kitchen and ben the house, nnd when he drew our attention to It we could see diwllcht through It In a donen place, where It wns bored with bullet. rr crocked with battering Here, old Dalclelsli told us Ronald Macdonald. chieftain of the Kvles. who wni afterward "fowi'l murthered by n heathen hlacknnioor" fought with six men at his back nnd only th door be tween him ami seventeen of Farl Mur ray's men. There was silence for a moment or two. xnen our strange champion looked quickly at me and said: "Let us go. I nodded my head. Even though we had some nours' start of tne Macaon olds, and making every allowance for the fumes of the chieftain's head. It would never do for us to be closely pur sued while we were still thirty miles from the comparative safety of the town of Glasgow, in a few minutes all was ready. Roderick walked to the boat with us. "It will snow," he whispered to me in Gaelic. "Where would ye be going?" I only half trusted the man. He saw It, I think, for he added: "Ye need not be swelrt to tell me. Te helped me. Rorle, an' I would help the lass. But If ye are not for Kllellan, what for, man? The clachan's turned In favor of ye. The women have suffered, and half of the place Is burned. Aundra's dead, and the laird, as ye would ken: and young Jamie will not have been seen since that night. He either ran away, or was killed In the fight, but his body was not found." "Then, who is the master of Kllellan?" I asked. "There It Is," said Roderick signifi cantly. "There Is no laird, the next of kin being absent." There was a mo ment's silence. Then he said sincerely: "Come back with me. Rorle. We are for no more fighting, but if the Macdon ald comes after ye and the lass, the clan will stand to your heel." "The Macdonald. and I will fight this alone." I said. "My hope. Roderick and if, indeed. I am now laird of Kllel lan. you can bear this word to my peo ple my hope Is. that there will be an end to this murder and fighting. Ye can sav I have gone to Glasgow to speak with Alexander Macmurtrle, our man of affairs In law, and that I shall act on his word thereafter, as I hope thereafter the Campbells will act on mine." I was rather proud of that speech, but the moment was a proud one. and I ob served that It had Its effect upon Roder ick Dow, for as I was speaking he took his bonnet from his head and stood lowly In the presence of the person whom he believed to be his chieftain.
