Majority of Issues Settled Back
to Practically Same Levels
as Have Prevailed.
NEW YORK, Feb. 4. The stock mar
ket today is dull and Irregular. After
showing a tendency to advance at the
opening, tho majority of the Issues set
tled back to price levels that were prac
tically tho same as those which prevail
ed fet the closo yesterday. Several of
the International stocks were weak
under reported foreign selling, but a
few of tho specialties and Industrials
made good advances.
Ono of the notably weak stocks was
American Sugar Refining, for sovoral
days during the past. week a market
leader. Sugar dropped during the first
hour to 103, for a loss of 3 points,
but later recovered fractionally. The
weakness was attributed to tho liquida
tion or long accounts.
Canadian Pacific reflected the poor
showing embodied In the statement of
earnings Just issued by dropping to
154, a decline of 2 points. The
gross earnings In January decreased
$1,811,000. The decrease since July
totals $21,162,673.
United Btatcs Steel common, fnr v.
eral days a depressing factor, advanced
nearly a point by selling up to 41.
It later reacted slightly. With no news
to account for Its activity, except the
long talked of earnings of tho corpora
tion, Bethlehem Steel Jumped moro than
2 points to 58. Studebaker was
strong and active.
