The District Health Department ia
planning- a house-to-house canvass of
certain sections of the city, where
whooping' cough cases are said to
exist in large numbers. In one par
ticular neighborhood, near Tenth and
K streets northwest, the Health De
partment discovered eight cases.
Health Inspectors found on differ
ent occasions there were several chil
dren suffering with whooping cough,
who were allowed to play on tue
streets with other children. The in
spectors immediately put a stop to
Health Department officials be
lieve many cases exist which have
not been reported to the department,

URGED BY PEYTON
Emphasizing- the need for a speedy
settlement of the controversy now
rasing over the case of Rosecoe C.
Bruce, assistant superintendent of
schools. Fountain Peyton, colored
member of the Board of Education,
came out today in favor of a hearing
to adjust the matter.
The Board of Education because
of the attitude of a majority of the
members has been steadily Ignoring
the appeals of the anti-Bruce and
pro-Bruce factions for a hearing.
Mr. Peyton believes, however, that
the colored schools will continue to
be disturbed by the Bruce contro
versy until a hearing is held, and def
initely expresses his belief that such
a hearing will be best for all con
cerned. "As a member of the Board of Edu
cation, I have no opinion to express
as to the Justice or the injustice of
the flght against Mr. Bruce," said
Mr. Peyton. "My attitude In regard
to the quarrel, at this time, is one of

hearing practically hopeless, has al
ready gone to several members of

Members of the executive commit
tee of the Parents' League met at
the home of ours. F. S. Tanner, presi
dent, 1444 Q street northwest, last
night, and laid plans for the further
ance of the campaign against Assist
ant Superintendent Bruce.
Another mass meeting and over
flow meetings of the 20,000 members
of the Parents' League will be held
at the Metropolitan A. M. E. Church
Tuesday night to protest against the
action of the board in ignoring gen
erals demands for a hearing on the

THE HAGUE, June 6. A Berlin
correspondent of the Philadelphia Pub
lic Ledger says the Berlin corporation
has caused a hundred portraits and
busts of the former Kaiser to be re
moved from municipal offices and
schools to the attics. The same has
been done with portraits of other
members of the Imperial family.

It Is estimated that more than 15,000
Jacklcs from the Atlantic fleet at An
napolis yesterday took advantage of
twenty-four hours' liberty to vlslfthls
city. It was their first chance since
their return from the war zone.
All the various community organi
zations combined to mako the boys'
visit a pleasant one, and many facili
ties were placed at their disposal for
the day. The sightseeing buses
seemed to be the most popular during
the daytime, and many trips were ar
ranged about the city by recreation
Tea dances and afternoon receptions
wcro 'held In practically every club
house and hut of the War Camp Com
munity Service, and big dances were
conducted by the service at several
places. Many young women from the
departments contributed to the recep
tions to the men at the dances.
Many of the sailors, were Interested
in attending the sessions of both
House and Senate, and most of the
Government buildings were crowded
during the day.
Dances In the evening were ten
dered the boys at the Naval Battalion
Armory, Trinity Parish Hall, the
Thomson School, and other places.
It is expected that tut many mn

Israel Goldstein and his son, Ber
nard Goldstein, have filed a petition
In the District Supreme Court to be,
permitted to change their names and
that of the members of their respec
tive families to "Mereltnan."
It Is claimed by the petitioners
that "Merolman" was the name of
Goldstein's father and that It is their
desire to resume the old family name.
They changed their names to Gold
stein, they said, when they came t
this country from Russia and took
up their home In New York with an
aunt named Goldstein.
