WEDXENDAY XOBXIXti, SOV. 29. Fire.?Yesterday morning the frame tenement house of Mr. Sweeney, in ?North Wheeling, accidentally' caught fire, but before the flames had made much headway they were subdued. It is very fortunate indeed that this build ing was not burned, as its destruction now would cause i;iuch inconvenience, if not actual suffering, to a large num ber of families who occupy the build ing* . We have fortunately recently been spared from mnch lire, and it is to be hoped that we inay continue to escape. At the present time of year, however, when fires indoors are ho much needed, old chimneys and pipes being brought into requisition, it behooves all to use care in making their winter fire ar rangement*. A little carelessness now may cost thousands of dollars and oeccasion much Inconvenience. In this connection we may remark that our new steam fire engine is now daily expected. Propyls are invited for building a house for it. This Is a move In the right direction, which we hope to see followed by many more. Many object to the designed location ?>f the new engine, and think it will be found U?o remote in case of lire in another part of the city. Others claim tluit the same objection would exist if It were located liny other place. It is tbpught l>y ail parties that the only way to obviate the difficulty will bo to get another engine or two. Thk Commission."?1There was a meeting yesterday afternoon, at the rooms of the Young Men's Christian Association#of the gentlemen who were appointed a committee to report on the organization of a branch of the "Union Commission" in this State. A partial list of names of gentlemen who will bo selected for officers of the commis sion was arranged; a committee ap pointed to draw up a constitution and by-laws for the commission; and a gen tleman selected to draft for publication an address to the public, wetting forth the objects of the proposed organiza tion. It was thought by those present at the meeting yesterday that no trouble will exist in the formation of commission. There will lie another meeting of this committee on Thursday evening next, at the office of Mr. J. C. Urr, when it is desired to have a full attendance. The object of this organization is by this time so well kuowu to our readers that we need not revert ill detail to_ it now. It certainly receives tl?e cordial support of every good man and woman. lliVKR Nkwh.?1The river was slowly rising yesterday, with sixfeetand three inches of water in the channel. The Jsc<c Qumb*, Henry Jjognn and %>incMvillc made their regular visits to our landing. The J'otomac left at 5oTclock p. m. for Cincinnati, with as much freight as slio wanted. Ity the way, she has secured a new perforiner.for her calliope who is considerable on that Instrument. The /'in'' drov^bnd Niwhvilleare both advertised for Cincinnati at 5 o'clock this p. m., in place of the Wild Waguner. They are both good boats. The new boat for the Northern Line Company will l>e launched this after noon from the bout yard of Messrs. Wil son, iMinlevy dr Co., this city. She will ?h? finished here, and willbe a credit to our city. Messrs. Unties A* Beam will build the cabin, and Messrs. Sweeney? .V < o. fiiruinh the machinery. The good reputation of these firms Tor turning out excellent Work is a sutlicicut guarantee that the new boat will lie well finished. The landing yesterday was remarka bly busy. Freight was very abundant, atid passengers tolerably plentiful. "Mininu, Grapk and Wink Associ ation."?Somo time since we made mention that stock was lielng subscrib ed in our city for the organization of a Company on a large scale for the pur pose of mining, raising grapes and making wine. A sufficiently large amoiiut of capital was subscribed and the Comjwiny was formed and a charter obtained from the State of Ohio. The name of the Company is the "Wheel-' inij and Belmont Mining, Grape and Wine Association?" A meeting of the stockholders was recently held in this citv, at which they elected the following"! named gentlemen to the offices d?*sig-! tinted: Joseph Seybold, President;' Hannibal Forbes, Secretary; Samuel llthlreth. Treasurer, and I.?cwis Jones. John Halm, John Heid, 1 >. K. Donnol and Thomas 11 Motllt, Directors. The Companv has purchased the farm over the river near Martinsville known as the "Zimmerman ftarm," It contains about 150 acres, and was bought at $35, 000. About 50 acres of the ground an? already in grapes; and there is on the place a fine vein of coal already open ed. The Company are going exten sively Into the manufacture of wine and taking out coal. For the latter pur pose tliey are going to ohtaiu a steam iHtat, and will bring their own products into market. The capital of the Com pany will bo 9150,000 wncn it is all taken, j WiiEKtlNO Work.?Wo have known1 all aloug that our city was famed j abroad in the excellency of some of her ! articles of manufacture, but were rather [ surprised yesterday to learn that our; enterprising friend, Mr. Henry C. Har bour, had received all the way from Chicago an order for two elegant mir rors. We Inspected them yesterday at Mr. Harbour's store, where they now are awaiting shipment, ami can only say that tlie'y are most elegant. One of th?\ glasses, designed for a mantle, is about seven foot by five?the other Is not so l>?rge. The'glMsscs were, of course, im \sorted, but were mounted by Mr. larbourin a style of finish that would do credit to the workmanship of any city. CorNTBunerr Fka<txosai. The words "United States" in the eounteifeit are not quite as clearly defined as in the genuine,? The sword held by the female in the vignette appears as a white streak in the genuine. In the counterfeit it is mora heavily engraved. Under the word "and" in the right upper Corner there Is a flourish' in the genuine which iscntirelv absent in the counterfeit.? This last* defect is one of the simplest means of dctering the bogus notes. Fkvkr.?The present season seems to, bo productive of a great deal of sickness ?f the lever type, and we learh that the typhoid, intermittent and billious fev ers prevail to an alarming extent in. some particular localities. All should be particularly careful In the clothing they wear, as it should be of the warm est material, in order to counteract the sudden change of the atmosphere. Bv all means keep the feet dry, as much disease can be traced to the evil etl'ect of wearing thin soled, or leaky boots and shoes. --- ^ A Goon Pi.ack to Buy,?The enter prising firm of Stein Bra's.?one of the largest dealers In our city?advertise in our paper to-day a superior lot of goods. Market Yebtbbday Evening.? There was a lair attendance of both sellers and buyers at market yesterday e.vening. Cold weather has about done for stragglers what the whole body of market buyers could not do, viz; kept them away from the market. Butter was (we very nearly said worth) selling for 3oa45c; chickens 35a40c; turkeys, 9l?>a$175; potatoes 35a40c. Articles were tolerably abundant.
