?kfc!irftU^gfttar. CAMPBELL, FBEW & CO.| EDITORS AXD PROPRIETORS. M05D.IT MOR5I5G, Jf5E Ift. The telegraph announces this morn- | ing a sad bat not anexpected event, the j death of Gen. Lewis Cav?, at his home in Detroit, Michigan. Like his illustri ons ootemporary, General Scott, who1 preceded him bat a few days. General Cass was in many respects a remarka ble man, and like him belonged to a past generation. His military title was acquired as Scott's first fame was In the war of 1812- He was known in every hamlet in the land as the unsuccessful opponent of General Taylor for the Presidency in l&ii In the course of a long pablic life he held many responsible and honorable positions, among them Secretary of State of the United States. One by one the giants of a past age have departed until all , the eloquent voices of the statesmen ootemporaneous with Clay and Webster and Calhoun are silenced in the grave. The amendment to the State Consti tution having been ratified, and **20,000 democrats driven from the State," it becomes an interesting question how our conservative friends are going to get votes* enough to carry the State this fall againt^he Union ticket, as they now declare they are going to do. Some one please enlighten us. A Stxbtuso rumor prevailed in Washington last Friday, in the public departments and in both Houses of Congress, that Judge Underwood had been assassinated in Alexandria, Vs., but a telegram from Alexandria receiv ed the same evening In reply to an inqui ry contradicted the report. It is not im possible, judging from the malignancy of Mr. U.'s enemies, that such a report may some day be true. Thb New York Evening Past has the following amusing arraignment of ren egade Whigs as the Jonahs who have swamped the Democratic party. Every new platform which the Democratic party has built since 1848 has been erected simultaneously with a new in fusion of the Whig element in it. Such men as William B. Reed, of Philadel phia; George Dnnt and Robert C. Win throp, of Boston; Washington Hunt, the Brookses and Ketcbnms, of New York: Senator Wright, of New Jersey; Pleasants and Stuart, of Virginia; Toombs, ot Georgia; Wickiiffe and Da vis, of Kentucky, who were first known as leaders of the Whig party, having helped to ruin that organization, songht refuge among the Democrats; and be ing suffered to become leaders there, brought upon their new associates also the ruin which they carry with them. These persons begin their career in politics as "national republicans;" they became whigs in ISM; democratic whigs in 1839; native Ameiicsns in 1811; na tional wbigs In lbSO; know nothings in 18S4; and then constitutional Union men and democrats in 1800. They beei n now to call themselved ''National Johnson men." They entered the whig party when it was powerful, and their coun sels snd policy destroyed it; they went over to the democratic party when that was powerful and triumphant, imposed themselves upon it as leaders, ana their counsel andnolicy bavenow ruined that party. Their experience has doubtless taught them that a name is nothing: but tbeir political history sbould warn all parties sgainst receiving them, for they are only Jonahs, whose presence brings destruction. It is a singular fact, that may be men tioned In connection with the forego ing, that nearly all the prominent managers of the democratic party in this State are old renegade Whigs. We might mention names, but we have no "intentions" (as Miss Miggs would aay,) of being personal. Our readers know who they are. Perhaps they are very appropriately called "Jonahs," j but we doubt tbey will be as lucky as Jonsb, when he embarked in i oil. Tbey will never set foot on dry land again* The Board of Directors of the Balti more and Ohio Railroad, at their meet ing the other day, in accepting the re signation of W. Preeoott Smith, Esq.. i the long and justly popular Master of Transportation of that road, adopted resolutions acknowledging the ability, fidelity and integrity with which, dur ing many years and in trying periods, he uniformly discharged the duties of his office. Tbis is a well merited tribute to a most faithful and efficient officer. To the ssgacity, energy, and untiring Industry of Mr. Smith the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad is indebted for much of Its success. During his administra tion of the duties of Master of Trans portation hs has earned a reputation unequalled as a practical and success lul railroad manager. Mr. Smith has aooepted the appointment aa Internal Revenue Collector of the Third District of Maryland, and will carry with him the cordial wishes of a host of warm Mends. Mr. Smith's connection with the road will cease on the 1st of July, when Mr. John Wilson will enter upon the dis charge of the duties of Master of Transportation. The Issues Raised toy the Amendment UUafl Halted BtatM Constitution. Says the Chicago Republican, by way of comment on the amendment to the Constitution of the United States pro posed by Congress to the State Legisla tures; The political issue before the country, from this time out, will be the ratifica tion or rejection of that amendment. In its support there will be no division among the Union men. It is unassaila ble. It furnishes a practical question upon which tha country will reoord its judgment. There can be no evading the issue. The Democracy, In opposing it, must place themselves as? ttJi.iiVIZ1?* dtixens of the whole United States the character of citizens tber may reside. 5. The carriage was about eight or nine feet in length, with iron wheels, and had two JS5fi?tDg^ffeL wittl comfortable cumhions and backs. It was occupied by half a dozen men, and was operated by one man, who acted both as engineer and guide. There was very lime noise, and nothing to denote it specially ei oept the absence of horse., and a small smoke-stack, about a foot high, at the forward end. This stack resembled an ordinary stove pipe. The carriage was turned into Grand street with apparent ease, and that street being iVss ob structed by vehicles than I)road way, it was dnven at the average speed of a norse car. ?Gen.
