Williams and Guona, Just tried in the Liverpool Court of Aesly-e, haB resulted in judgment for the plaintiff, with damages assessed at ?13,000 sterling. This suit grew out or a nltro-glvcerlne explosion at Aspin wall on the 3d of April, 1808, by which the steamship European, belonging to the plaintiff, waa totally destroyed while lying at the above named port. The explosion resulted in the loss of 60 lives, including those of the captain and other officers. The steamer Carrib bea, of the same line, also sustained serious damages. The ahip was valued at from ?36.000 to ?40,000. The cargo was insured for about ?80,000, and the damages to the Carribean were nearly ?1000. The ownera of several buildings on shore which were demolished, put i their claims for damage to a consid erable amount additional. The under writers declined to make good the losses and threw the responsibility upon the owners of the European, on the ground that they were culpable In carrying explosive material on their ship and be low deck. The plaintiffs in turn brought suit against Williams and Quona as shippers of nitro-gl.vcerilie, claiming that they were guilty of shipping arti cles under the name of glorain oil, as substances unknown to chemists or commerce, and thus involved the plaintiffs in their greatloss. 'l'ho de fendants replied that they had acted In the matter only aB forwarders; that the explosive material came to them froutt Hamburg, with instructions to forward via the plaintiffs' line; they were de elded by the descriptive title of glorain oil in manifest, and they had no know). edge of the dangerous character of the freight. Thejudgment rendered is un derstood to definitely settle the fact of damages. London, Aug. 21?Evening.?Consols 04 7-10; 5-20S 735.; Illinois 77;i;Erio45!<; Atlantic A Great Western 21. Washington, Aug. 20. grant's victory over the president. The style in which General Grant got out the President's order relieving Sheridan, is very distasteful to Mr. Johnson's friends, and particularly to the Louisiana wiug, which has been clamoring for Sheridan's removal. The President lias made allusion to General Graut's written protest against it, and evidently the iutention is to suppress General Grant's letter on the subject. At any rate the President went ho far last night, as to intimate that no such document existed. It is, however, known, positively, that when the President announced his intention to suspend Secretary Stanton, General' Grant sent an earnest remonstrance to the President, lu writing, against the proposed actiou. This paper is now buried at the White House in some way. General Graut on receiving the President's order yesterday, at once ? ailed on him and earnestly protested against it, and afterwards sent a writ ten protest, couched in very strong and Coin ted language, which in all proba ility will be withheld. POPE AND HOWARD TO BE REMOVED. The evening Johnson journals say that Pope and Howard are to be de capitated next. The President has in timated an iutention of putting Colo nel Gordon Grauger at the head of the , Freedmen's Bureau. Grauger has been loafiutc arouud Washington ever since the Cleveland Convention, doing the President's work. General Graut has tried several times to have him sent to his regiment, but in each case the Pres ident has countermanded the order. A PETITION FOR THE REMOVAL OF STANTON. The contents and history of one of the first papers the President ever re ceived, concerning the removal of Se-' cretary Stanton, has come to light. It is a petition lor his Immediate re moval, dated about a year ago, aud , originated at the Philadelphia Conven tion. It was drawn up by John Hogan, of St. Louis, und first signed by the Wisconsin delegation, followed by the delegation of Ohio, aud part of the Illi nois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Min nesota delegations. After the fall electious, scores of office seekers who visited the capital attempted frequently to get their hands on this document, to erase their names, but found on inquiry at the White House that it bad been mislaid. Those most anxious to get possession of it were military gentle men seeking promotion or appoint ment. MARYLAND CONSTITUTION. The Constitution proposed by the late Maryland Convention has appeared. From the old bill of rights has been omitted Article 1: "We hold it to be self-evident that all men are created equally free; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain iualienable rights, among which are life, liberty, enjoyment oi the proceeds of their own labor and the pursuit of happiness." From the Constitution the following was struck out: "Every citizen owes paramount allegiance to the Constitu tion and Government of the United Slates." Several Stales ' rights doc trines are very clearly expressed in the document. _____ New York .Specials. New York, Aug. 21.?The Herald's special says: Gen. Sickles is likely to be the next victim of the President, ow ing to his interfering with the man dates of the Assize Court at Wilming ton, N. C., and ordering his subordi nates to give no heed to the order of the Attorney General to the United Stales Marshal to prosecute criminally all parties obstructing the execution of the process of the Supreme Court. Gen. Sickles, it is understood, takes the ground that if the Federal courts are permitted to enforce their di rections in his district, they may very soon deolare the reconstruction acts un constitutional and void. It is said that Gen. Sickles has writ leu a spirited letter to Gen. Grant on that subject. The Times' special says: If is ex tremely probable that General How ard will silortly be relieved from duly as Commissioner of the Freedmen's Bureau and mustered out of his volun teer rank, which will leave him a Brig adier General in the regular army. An officer not higher in rank than Col onel will probably be assigned to the Bureau. The name of Gordon Grauger is mentioned as his successor. He is Colonel of one of the new infantry reg iments, but has never yet joined his command. The Tribune's special says: At the meeting of the Soldiers and Sailors Un ion which adopted a resolution denoun cing the President's action in remov ing Stanton, the following resolution was rejected on the grouud lhat no one knew bow Grant stood aud it would not do to eudorse him: Resolved, That appreciating the su preme duty which rests upon a soldier of promptly obeying the lawful com mands of his superior officer, aud look ing to the assignment of General Grant as Secretary of War, ad interim, in the nature of a military order from the Commander-in-Chief of the Armv and Navy, not to be disregarded, although disapproved, without insub ordination ; we indorse Gen.
