Tub Wheeling llitigo Company* ye*(cr day shipped ten barrels of Tfln^ iFHW Orleans and five to Memphis, by mil. This, it is hoped, is tho beginning of a con siderable demand from the South novrthat the fever has abated. * The shook business is showingsome signs of revival ut Munnington, Thornton, Xow l?urg ami Cranberry .Summit. Orders are roming onre mnre from tho West Indies through Baltimore parties. This is owing to ihe suppression of the inutrroction in Cuba, and tho consequent revival of tho >.ugar trade of the Island. It will bo some, time before tho trade readies its old pro Portions. At one time a single house in t'altimoro exported 450,000 shook to the West Indies, and nearly all of this was Mipplied from the lino of the Baltimore & Ohio road in West Virginia. Ever, since the failure of Perry ?5c Co. and Sterling, Ahrcns <fc Co. the business has liiul a very Mark eye. Let us hope that better times have conle. O.ve ofour Wheeling travelers, during a call on us yesterday, said that his expor iencoon the road this XaJ! i* about this, i that country buyors who have kept theui-| selves in good shape by buying in small amounts during the decline in prices^ and j who havo watched their sales very care fully, thus avoiding embarrassment at' either end of their trade, generally report a satisfactory business this fall, while those who have not thus conducted their busi ness incline to a complaining mood about prospects for better times. A merchant who is behind hand to tho jobber, and. w ho has trusted out his pxxls to those | who are in arrears to him, is not naturally j in a i?ositiou to take a hopeful view of the) future. Thk late Allen*T. "Wilson, of Marion county, Col., left property worth-about ?86,000 ami a most rentoHcablc will. It provides that his only son ^hall.givo to his mother SoOOa year for her support, pro viding, however, that she shall not give any money to any Catholic Church, priest or society. If the attains the ago of ten years, and then uses tobacco, or drinks alcohol, wine, beer or cider, he shall for feit all rights under the will or live for a month upon nothing but bread and water, and each time he commits tho offence the penance must be repeated. Jf, after he is eighteen years old, heshall drink or smoke, he shall forfeit his heritage, or instead work steadily for a ycq^aa a common farm laborer and save one-half of his wages. If he becomes a Catholic, or if. after" he is eighteen years old, he shall give any money whatever to a Roman Catholic priest, or layman, he shall foj-feit his estate. Accobdcco to a New York Sttn detective, I who has l>een "shadowing" him, General Butler, after stealing a nomination for: Governor, is hard at work to steal an elec- j turn. At 4 o'clock in the afternoon he left j lio?ton to speak at Harwich, more than eighty miles distant, in the evening. The; next morning he drove, tan miles and ad* dressed a meeting at Orleans;' Thence, at ? 1 o'clock, he went by rail to Provincctown,1 on Cape Cod. where he spoke in the even* inc. At 4 o'clock the following morning he went to Well fleet, where a crowd listened to him. Returning to Boston in the after noon he went by another railroad line to Melrose, drove from there to Stoneham, speaking at both places and reached his home in Lowell at 3 o'clock the next morn ing. We may say of Butler as is sometimes said of othfrr persons engaged in doubtful pursuits: Half as mnch labor in a legiti mate calling would aeoura-hiin a comfort able living. * > The Wa.YUPHbiin; ?v Wa*hin|tlon Xnrrow fiance BMit. w J.blnjrton, Ts., Shorter; The present manager took possession of the road in January last, when" trains had been running only abont two months. In 1847 he was elected to the .State Sen- j ate of Virginia, nerving in that body until: 18-51... In 1850 he was elected to the Vir ginia Constitutional Convention, and iu 1S55 to n scat in Congress on the American or Know Nothing ticket, where he served one term. In 1801 he was elected to the Virginia .Secession Convention, his col league being Col. Wilson. In that body he became, with the exception of George W. Summers, the most prominent man from West Va., and he far outshone Sum mers nt the last inthequalityof his Union ism. So prominent did he become as the Unipn leader that on leaving the Conven tion, alter the passage of the Ordinance of Secession, he was received with open arms by Mr. Lincoln's administration, and for a long time was its most prominent and influential adviser iu all matters Mating to West Virginia. From 1601 to 1803 was the zenith of Mr. Carlile's fame and influence. He was elected to Congress in May, 1801, and in a few months thereafter to the United States Seriate. Previous to this he took a very active part iu organiringthe Union! element in West Virginia into govern: mental form, and st one time advocated a very abrupt movement in order to secure a new Stato. He was a member of the Convention that in August, 1801, submit ted the new State ordinance. He was the author of the first name??'Kanawha"? adopted for the State, and was in the fore front of tho contest until the question of admission came before the United States Senate, and especially before tho Commit tee on Territories, of which he was a mem; ber, when to the great surprise of every new state man in West Virginia he be came an opponent of the scheme as it then stood, basiug his opposition on the ground that the territory included was not large enough and should take in the \ alley of Virginia, and attaching such conditions to his amendment to the bill, in the way of a vote of the people oi the counties to bo added, as would havn made a new State forever possible. The defection of Mr. Carlile from the New State bill was the beginning of the end of his prestige at Washington and in West Virginia. He never regained to any satisfactory degree tho conlideuce of the Union ]>eople. The State was admitted over his opposition, and he, partly driven and partly going of his own accord, joined himself with Cowan, tho Republican Sena tor from Pennsylvania, as an ally of the Democracy, and advocated the election of McClellan in ISM against Mr. Lincoln. Four years afterwards, with that propen sity for change that characteriztnl his whole public life, he re-joined the Repub lican party, and advocated the election of General Grant, who in recognition of his services as a Union man, and especially as his advocate in the Presidential canvass, nominated him to the Senate as Minister to Sweden, but the Senate refused to con firm the nomination and the appointment fell through. Willi uus lauure -nr. uaruius puvuc life may be paid to have closed, althongh ho a ways afterward co-operatcd with the Republican party, and in 1872 took some jwirt in the canvass for General Grant's re election. His health had begun to break down about that time, and this fact, to gether with his pecuniary misfortunes, weighed on hia spirits and so impaired his natural buoyancy and force as to greatly embarrass his attempts to retrieve his fortune* In life by the practice of his pro fession. Gradually liis* disease (dropsy) gained upon him, and for a year past he has been almost a helpless invalid, depen dent to a large degree upon the kindness of his old friends 8ud neighbors. Thus has ended the carecr of one of the noted men of our State. He was a inau of very showy talents as a popular speaker. He possessed a warm and magnetic man ner, had a fine flow of language a nuig nitkent voice, and was very effective in all assemblies in which he api>eared as a speaker. Like most oraton*, he was a man of moods, very impressionable, easy to be elated or depressed, and hence apt to be modifying his views or changing them altogether. These were his drawbacks as a public man. And vetjJwpite of them he did great service for the Uuion cause in Virginia and West Virginia?a service that ontitles him to be held in grateful remembrance. He did ai much as any othcrjuan to .carry us over the dead point of danger, and y e "tust in charity assume that -when he changed lie did so for rea son* that to his peculiar disposition were of great weight. Let us honor him for all that he did on our behalf, and no man did more, and burr in oblivion all that we had cause to regret Thr Proflln of nn Applc-Srllrr** Exptrl* mm l. A year ago last winter L. J. Strout, of Liinington, while barrelling apples to be shipped to parts uukuown to him, con ceived the novel idea of ascertaining their destination by putting a letter enclosing money to pay the postage on a return letter in one of the barrels, kindly asking the purchaser to write him thculateof owning Jit, his name and residence, the price paid, the condition of the apples when opened, 'etc. In about three months Mr. Strout received a letter from a merchant in Lon don, England, saying one of his customers ? found the letter and passed it to him, and bv him it wan yen* neatly answered, giv ing all the deaireu information iu regard to apple*, etc. Last winter Mr. Strout re ceived a letter from the same merchant in relation to tilling an order for Maine apples, but the quality and scarceness of { the fruit last year prevented hi* tilling the1 order satisfactorily to himself. TMs week! Mr. Strout has received another order by ?cable for several hundred barrels as sam ples from the same persons. As Mr. Strout will undoubtedly fill the order, the Eng lish gentleman will no doubt be surprised at the sixe and quality of the fruit, which is this year probably a third larger than two years ago.?lft&tyW (Ye.) In a paper read at a domestic economy congress at Birmingham, England, not long ago, Dr. Wilson gave the following hints on the proinir times for eating for ditTerent classes of workers: Eor the ac tive outdoor laborer andartisan, an t?arly breakfast before work, a midday dinner, with an interval of rest, and supper after the day's work is over, have long been proved by experience to be most conducive to health". For the business man a later breakfast, a midday luncheon and a late dinner after the day's work is over, is the be^t arrangement. For literary men, who write more in the evening than during the dav, an early dinuer and a light supper will be found to. be tho most" advantageous for cteadv work. Idler?, to enjoy life, if they possibly can, should dine early if they intend t6 spend the evening at theatres and tho like, but if they accept dinner invitations freely they should be very careful not to eat too much at the midday meal. The breakfast hour shonld he determined in a irreat measure bv the hour of rising; but in any ease food should be partaken of be fore the material business of the day is commenced. Those who like to take a "constitutional" before breakfast would find their appetite whetted and their walk made all the more enjoyable if they took a little milkor?yV nu tail, with bread or bis cuit, before starting. Work done before breakfast is always irksome and fatiguing, and on that account it is very likely to be badly done. The last meal should be suf firientlv late for the whole not to be ab sorlMjdWore retiring to rest. To a person in health three meals a day ought to be quite sutllcient, and the practice of contin ually "taking something' is sure to bring on indigestion. the qrtxTiox or pkofith.
