Bailnit/ returned from a two weeks visit to tho Valley of Virginia on Saturday last, where be had been attending a Lutheran church gathering at Woodstock. Ho says that the Valley givos every evidence of reviving pros perity, especially in tho way of good crops. He .was charmed with tho country, as everybody is who visits it. Ho speaks in glowing terms of tho hospitality of the people. During his visit ho made an ox? cijrplon to the famous Cavo uearLuray? tho rival of tho Mammoth Cave?and explored its wonders for part of a day. It really ranka among the great natural wonders of the world. Mr. UarniU ro? turns from his trip much improved in health. Uootl and Ilnd TIiuca. Just at this time there is an apparenl suddenly developed demand for most articles of commerce, such as-did not exist six months ago. One can hardly understand how there could be such a change in a few months. To illustrate the change in the situation the better we may remark that if to-day there was not a strong ieei? ing upon the country that prices had touched bottom, and were really once more on the up turn, thero would be none ol the apparent scarcity of supply in merchandise'tha^C is now urgently felt. Takt pig iron, for instance. It has sold in this vicinity in the last few days at $23 CO pei ton. This time last year?yes, even sis months ago?it could havb been bought for $18, or less. There is at least an advance of $5 50 por ton, or .TO per cent, in a very short time. The supply is not by an j means 30 per cent less than it was sis months ago. The absolute amount of pif iron in the country is not very materially different from what it was sixmonthsago If the feeling of the country was the sam< now as then there would be a great abun daiide of it, and the price would be as lov or lower. A change in the feeling of thi country has made a vast difference in thi relation of supply anil demand, am whereas thero was six months ago ai abundance for all demauds there is nowi decided and growing scarcity. Not long since the London Tunn die cussed the lutureof tradoin England in aj elaborato article, and in the course of it remarks touched upon this very point. I asked the qfieution, What makes the differ onco botween good and bad times? Thi was asked with reference to what had beei Maid about England having *.over-burdene< her own and foreign markets with an ex cess of production. The Tima held thati was uot necessary that former condition should be again absolutely restored befon prosperity would come. On the contrary it held that a comparatively small change for the better in the foreign markets of th world might naturally tell with exaggerate) effect ou the situation in England. \V quote its remarks on this head, as follows "This can bo illustrated by referonce ti the well known facts observed with re spcct to the prices of corn in the Kingdon in the old days when wo depended for it ?npi)ly almost entirely upon ourselves If the harvest was a fifth below the aver age, the price went up out of all propor tion to this deficiency. In a converse way wo know that tho rise of the price of coa six years since was wholly disproportion ato to the increased demand for it. It wai impossible to add at once to the quantity of coal produced; and the efTect of a fa mino resulted, without any falling ofT it tho quantity brought to market. It is al most needless to add that the greater the habitual economy of life, the greater musi be the strain of any sudden variations in its circumstances. We know that th< actual amouut added to our production sia years sinco was but a sttall proportion o: the whole: and the experience of stagna h'An MIA i ?I "U" iuivuk" nuibu no I1UIU 01UV.0 uioooct has scarcely resulted from any reaf diminution in the quantities of commodities produced, ho much aa from the disappear' unco of the abnormal increaso that for a short time told so sharply upon our condition. It is thus that the effects of good harvests in America affect us so quicklj and so deeply. They put in the hands oi our customers the means of administering that stimulus to our industries to which our traders and manufacturers are so prompt to respond." The above references of tho Timu applies, by way of illustration, to what we have been saying about the apparent hhxvii uiui6tu uim dmiuua ucinccii uu ordinary aud an extraordinary demand for merchandise. "We had six months ago a very ordinary demand for most articles of trade, while to-day wo have a decidedly active demand. As confidence grows broader and deeper, tho demand becomes more urgent. Contrary to general expectation, we have passed almost at a bound from sluggishness and lethargy to activity and urgoncy. Thoro is at once, as it frere, a legitimate and speculative demand-for that which was only recently a drug on the market. It has suddenly been discovered that tho supply, which only a short while ago seemed excessive, is now far short of the wnais 01 ouyors. As long as' this feeling, now bo tally aroused, exists, the present urgency of demand will also exist. llEAVYttfllPMEXTS TO EUROPE. New York, as set. forth in the Bulletin review a few days since, we fludare fully reflected at all thp other business centres. From a "random reading of our latest received commercial exchanges, we have evidence of the fact which cannot be mistaken. What our Western contemporaries call the business "boom," would seem to have partly struck the Eastern States. The Boston commercial writers, in their reviews of the week's trade. at all events, are unanimous in saying that the autumn could not open inoro auspiciously. The Shipping Lut and Price* Current says: "All the leading branches of trade have sturted up. and in several instances the season is at least two weeks earlier than usual. The activity in the boot and shoe market is Bometniug phenomenal almost, and shipments the present week have been the 8 largest known in the history of the in* s dustry." X The Commercial Bulletin, writing in tlic same vein, adds: "Anything of the kind which has been available has been sought a aftor, and the result has boon a material reduction in stocks." The bard vara trade h opens likewise with marked activity, and tho upward tendency of goods is inducing buyers to anticipate their wants. "The 3 outlook now is better all around than foi t quite a number of years, with stocks remarkably short. Manufacturers are busy with orders and are refusing to take more at the old figures, especially in heavy iron 1 lines." At Philadelphia, all of the facto1 ries are running on full time, and manu_ facturers are straining every point to have . tho goods ready in time for delivery fron; 1 tho 1st to the 15th of .September" The s Shoe and Leather Rqwrlcr says: "The job e hers have all that they can possibly gel , through with. The greater part of the ' shipments now go to the near-by Statef 0 and up* through the mining districts oi b Pennsylvania, Tko daily reports from the X coal and iron centres are highly pleasing, q and speak volumes in favor of better times in those sections.-" : At Chicago "great activity" is reported o iu nearly all departments o! the jobbing i" trade. One of tfeo Tribunereporters has ^ oeen interviewing representatives ol varib oils wholesale branches of trade in that . city, nhd the result all around is highly - satisfactory. All lines of business report * increased demand and an improvement in . prices, while collections are good and fail1 urea, apparently, are events of the past. - The iron manufacturers and dealers were i probably more jubilant than members of ' other trades, some of them appearing to have been completely carried away by the i sudden upward movement in iron. One firm states its belief that there will not be > iron enough to meet the demand, which t is beyond the present capacity, and in rei ply to a question whether they regarded > this as permanent prosperity or spasmodic | activity, replied: "It is strong and permaf nent. Iron will not bo a fraction lower - between now and the 1st of January. It I may be higher. Wo have had customers begging for accommodations, but we are ' unable to furnish them the goods." The same firm considered there was no danger of the market being glutted with English goods, evon if prices advanced to points which enabled British manufacturers to ; compete. "Within the next live years 25,000 miles of railway would be built in : the Stato, and that alone would havo a great effect on the market." Other Arms were equally confident. The WestisfamouB lor its enthusiasm in trade matters as in other thinus. bat it is to bo hoped that events will demonstrate that mere is something - more sub* stantial than mere enthusiasm in these jubilations. The Minnesota papers all write in a jubilant vein. "The city is full of visitors," says the St. Paul PioneerPros of the 3d, "and business in ovory lino is booming. The warehouses are thronged with customers, and out-of-town dealers are selecting very large stocks.'' At Minneapolis, according to tiio same authority, "wholesale houses report a very largo trade during the week, with promise of a (all trade surpassing any former season." The Detroit Free Prw, with reforence to iron and hardware, remarks: "Casual observers have been astonished by tho improvements reported, but those directly interested anu fully posted as to the demand and supply have accepted the same as inevitable. A better feeling has prevailed among jobbors,.who are of the general belief that the era of depression that has prevailed for several years past has given way to a period of prosperity. Men of means, several whoso ' interests have .. i- T>~?J univwiuiD ugouvuuuuuu w juunru ui irauu and banking circles, have manifested their confidence man Improvement by purchasing large stocks to hold." The outlook throughout Canada has not been very cheering oflato, but the fog is beginning to lift, "There Is now no doubt," according to the Montreal Herald, "that there is more activity In trade than has been noticeablo for some time, and though the movement Is not on a large scale, yet there Is a turn ior the better in many lines both in the demand and in tho prices obtainable, which causes the mercantile community to look forward with greater confidence in the future.
