But the *reat barrier to succeta is the avaricious desire of th?i iiepubiicaDf, in demanding every cilice that is worth baying. . The nomination of Maxwell by the BuckbnunoD Convention has proved a bone of contention among them, ami there iB a possibility that they will uot i ndoreo him on the 3U;h.?l'arkeriburg State Standard I Greenback.) If the Greenbackers at liuckhannon bad lived op (o the arrangement made at Grafton , there would have been nodifiiculty in making "a solid combination vote of all the opposing elementa to tho Democratic party now in power in this State." If the bead of the ticket bad been left for th$ Republicans to nominato on the 30th of July, as arranged, tbo prcE&nt confusion would have been avoided, a Republican would have been nominated from the lower eml of the State, thus obviating the geographical difficulty which we now have to encounter. That end of the State waa entitled to the candidate; aud it waa eo determined aud expressed, informally at tho MartinBburg conference. Had the Greenback Labor Convention nominated a candidate from the lower end of the State, we could have adjusted the matter without difficulty, as Republicans could have waived the irregularity, for the substantial thing could have been attained, and the present complications could have been avoided. As it is, we have got the four candidates nominated at Backhannon all huddled together in one part of the State. The obj act of the Republicans in insisting upon having a candidate in tho locality named was in deference to the large "Labor Reform" vote which we were to receive from that section. "We have faith that we shall, in come way, work out of the muddle. But to do so on the programme laid down by the Greenback Labor party, will require that that party heal up its divisions, rally to the support of Judge Maxwell, bo as to enable his friends to make a showing that his nomination by the Republican Convention will "bring fruit, and not ashes to "the lip." In the eame article from which we quote, the following strango language occurs: "Maxwell is credited with eaying that he will run aa the Greenback nominee whethur they do so or not. This we consider a redeeming feature in Maxwell's favor with the Greenback fusionists of the Slate. It implies a sentiment of honesty o( purpose, it least." What is the Stand* ard't authority for thia remarkable lac- i giage? We cannot believe that Judjie Maxwell baa placed himself on this ground. It having been intimated, however, that Hub is his position, he owea it to I himself, to the Republican party, and to ; the Greenback Labor party to elate un- j equivocally whero he does stand. Our article on Friday waB written in the inter- i eat of peace and harmony; and to bring ' about, if possible, unity among the appar- j ently coEiUcting interests involved. We j were, and are, willing for tho sakeot peaco e and unity, to forego something of the free- P dom of party action at our State Oonven- * tion, and nominate Judge Maxwell, pro- d Tided that oball seem beat and other substantial beneQls could be attained. We 8 cannot think that Judge Maxwell, for [ whom we have the highest political and v personal esteem, ia a party to any such tl euggestion aa ia contained in the above paragraph. We cannot afford to go into c convention on the SOtb, without some ex- e plicit statement on the a ... at con pntion *111 speak for nearly 60,000' Ue- C ubllcAnn. Do they propose to raise the old know-nothing issue??/? ilex oj June 2itlu We take pleasure in enlightening the Bourbon sheet as to whet this ay of Americanism, raised by the Blaine organp, means. It means that, with Blaine as 1 President, no foreign nation would dare in- 1 suit our glorious flag; that no foreign neiion 1 would dare arrest a man wearing tlie badge of American citizenship, except to punish ! him fur the commission of some heinous crimr; that no foreign nation would 1 date condemn an American citizen to a felon's cell er to an ignominious death, until he could nave had the , benefit of a full, free and impartial trial. It means that an Irishman, German, Ital- 1 ian, or any other foreign-born citizen, bear* , ing with him the honored credentials of American citizenship, shall have the right to visit his nativo land, without fear of in- 1 eult or arrest. It means that an American is an AMERICAN no matter whether nativo or foreign bom. It means that a foreign born citizen, no matter how hum ble, is entitled to tho ssme respect ai d Erotectirn at home and abroad as a native : orn. Doeo the Bourbon sheet nowcornprehend what our "American" cry meant? <lDo they propoEe to raise tho old knownething issue?" No, we do not. Toe 'know-nothing issue has been the main- 1 stay of tte Bourbon Democrats for yeais, j and it onlv commenced to nlav out when 1 the Republican party got an opportnnity to inaugurate the free school Bys:em. It ia ' because ihe people are beginning to read and think and vote for themselves; it is because the people "know something" ? now-adaye, that the liDurbons are be- E ginning to tremble in their boots at thoir threatened loea of power in this State. Whenever and wherover the olectrie light of knowledge has been cast upon ( the dark pai;e of J3ourbon history, so that t "he who riiua may read," the mult hao been the turning to the party oi progress, , tho party of liberty of thought, liberty of ; epeech and liberty of action.
