WhMt the iJrguii Ujllur Uuei>, wetk'a shipments of gold to England are a recognition of the silver danger and the indication that shrewd capitalists have little hope that Congress will mend matters. The New York Tribune says that early last year, when trouble was feared from the eupeilluous silver dollar, "many bought sterling exchango, or sent gold abroad, and among them were some 01 toe most Minacious Democratic capitalists," one of those capitalists being no less a person than Air. Tilden, who sent over and afterwards brought back a round million. it is significant that the first effect of the new Congress on the finance is to drive gold out of the country, and while this is occurring we may be sure that more gold is being deposited in the stockings savings banks and other household depositories. The people have so soon reached the conclusion that Congress will do nothing about silver, that hope already borrows disappointment from the session, and gold ia leaving to the inferior dollar the field which they cannot both occupy on oven terms. Of the Congressmen who oppose suspension of the silver dollar coinage, tome have alrcady'dteiared through tho public prints ll-'fil tno mver uuiiur 10 mo man's dollar, ai.d that the effort to stop piling up that dollar id part of the relentless warfuro which the rich wage upon the poor. Half a century ago Daniel Webster said that the very man of all others who has the'deepest interest in a good currency, who suffers most by a depredated currency and cuddcn charges of prices, is the man who earns his daily bread by his daily toil. And Mr. Webster denounced as the enemy to his whole country, to be marked especially ns 4,ili9 poor man's curse," whoevc r sought to aray one class against another on the question of a sound and stable currency. The wage-earner may be sure that the further opart gold and silver go the more certainty theie is that he will be paid for hiB toil in the inferior medium. A Wliate of Good Thing*. Mr. James Kussell Lowell, in his address at tho opening of the now Chelsea Public Library, eaid that tho men of three centuries ago, whose scholarship wo are apt to wonder at, were blest with fewer' books than we, and what they read was Utf-best. "They lunched with Plutarch and supped with I'lato"?and, we may suppose, though Mr. Lowell does not offer himself as authority, were not tlaycd or liauged if they happened not to have read Mr. ileniy James's latest novel so cloeely as to bo able to analyze his most complex characters. I The too-muchness of our reading is one of tho ovil things of our time. Starting in the world with no "book learning" whatever, we aim to go back and catch up with all that is classic in all languages, to be familjhr with all that is cf later origin, and to keep up with the enormous growth of a publishers' reservoir fed by tliliientfl of every tongue. Wo expect of each other that what is old and what is now in art, ?cience, politics, religion and literature shall bu ever on tap, to be sorved in approved style when oidered. We have got as far &s posnible away from tho idea of a few good books well read. The man of one book, always to bo feared, is rarely found in these duys, unle*F8 ho be some monument of antiquity who finds the Bible good enough for him, and has never troubled himself to read bo much us one book proving his Book untrue. Those of us who read books at all read eo much that we .have little time to assimilato aud digest. Southoy had been giving "a cortain litorary Quaker lady" an idea of his daily routino of labor?how ho roee at five, from Bix to eight read Spanish, then French for an hour; two hours to poetry; two liourd to writing prcse; and more of the same kind till ho read and wrote himself into bed again. "And, pray, when dost thou think, friend?" aakud the Quaker ol the Laureate. To gut tho boat out o( reading theie ought to be a good system honestly pursued, which will bo no less a pleasure because it is also a protit. But if one aims to keep up with everything that is published on every topic and in every department of literature, he must understand that he can have no thorough acquaintance with anything, and is not likely to llnd increasing comfort in the companionship of his hooks. Jtead?think,?otherwise reading is almost iu vain, for nothing remains but acattcrod particles huving no relation to each other and rarely at command even when very little would be a Godsend. A WcitkosM for Ulftmond*. Tabor, who paid an onormous sum of money for a B&at iu the United States Senato for thirty days, that he might be marked for Ufo witu the, uranu 01 an exSenator, has abandoned his intellecutial struggle with $2o0 night shirts.and isdevoting his talents to the adorment of his person with diamonds. Tabor does not go it quite so strong as the late Mrs. Mary Jano Morgan, who had half a million in diamonds and fiomotimes were a hundred thousand dollars worth. Tabor wears thirty thousand dollars worth of diamonds, in his shirt front, in hiscufls, in his collar, on hisflngers, wherever a dinmond can be placed to pnblic advantage. Beforo he retires he unharnesses himself and hands over his precious jewels to be kept at tho risk of the hotel; and before he can see company in tho' morning he has to send for his diamonds and put himaolf to* gether. A newspaper recontly told of a woman who had her teeth filled with diamonds, gold being too common for her. Tabor has his head filled with diamonds. Men of the Tabor kind have their use in the world. Among other things they stimulate the diamond production; they eel an awful example; they show what fools some mortals be; they entertain, like the trirk mtilo in the circus. They have other uses, but the world is slow to find them out. Th?j Might Do WurMi Buckhannon Buty Hte. A VVAII INCIDENT. How Mark Twalu >uced Grant la tha Awful Day* of Ulood Hyllltnff. Tho Now York Sun calls attention to the curious fact that Mark Twain's article, in the December Century, entitled, "The Private History of a Campaign that Failed," is, by an odd coincidence, a contemporaneous supplement to chapter 18 in the first volume, just printed, of General Grant's memoirs. It appears that the only time that General Grant woe really scared was when he bad to meet the little army in which his future publisher was a private. At Palmyra, Grant, then a Colonel, was ordered to movti against Col. Thomas Harris, who was said to be encamped at the little town oi Florida, some twenty-five miles away. In his memoirs General Grant tells how his heart kept getting higher and higher as he approached the enemy, until ne felt it in his throat, but when ho reached a noint where ha exoerUul to me them and found they bad lied, bis heart resumed its place. Mark Twain wis one of tho "enemy," and that be and his follow-tol* diera were equally frightened appears in bis frank confession in the December Century. The difference between the two soldiers was that Mark Twain was thrown into such trepidation that he then and there abandoned forever the profession of arms, whereas General Grant made on that occasion the discovery that the t nemy was as mncb afraid of him as he had been of them. "This," says General Grant, "was a view of the question I had never taken before, but it was one I never forgot afterwards. From that event to the close of tho war, I never experienced trepidation upon confronting an enemy, though I always felt more or less anxiety." ChrUtmM Karaite. Tuv SiJUngi.
