Consequently the Jlfyuter'a names of tho three who voted, that way are entitled to just uh much contldcnco as the rest of the para graph, which is ulljdeliberutely false. Lea liurrett, Held lor tho Crime, KxpresMC* IIU Hegret That Ho 1)1(1 Not Kill Manslluld?? l?x* citcmout on tho Island. Leu Barrett, a man who has figured somewhat in the courts, was arrested last evening in the little shoe shop at the uorth end of the upper market house, by OtHcers Lukens, Shorts and Cruice, on a charge of highway robbery. Tho war runt wus issued by Squire Davis, on com print of Ii. J. Manstleld, the well-known keeper of a saloon on Alain street, near Tenth. Barrett wus at ouce given a hearing before Soulre Duvis, and held in the sum of $2,000 for his anpearauce at court, and in default of bail was sent to jail. Mansfield was going to his home on the Island yesterday moruing about 2 o'clock, und as usual went through the alley leading oil' of Zuno street not far from Virginia, lie had gone only a few rods iu the alley when two men jumped upon him from the shadow, and while one seized him by the throat and choked him severely, the other nounded him with his lists, lie was thrown down, and his pocket book, containing $207 10 was taken. As the men left, Mansfield drew his re volver und fired several shots after them, but without avail, lie drooped his re volver and it could not he found again. The shooting creating a good deal of ex* citemeut and attracted a crowd. Tho iiwn wore something over tbeir faces, hut from tho size, build and voice uf one Mansfield recognized him us l.on liurrett, with whom he had hud trouble before, when Barrett fired a revolver through the plate glass windows of the suloon. He was indicted for this and it cost him a good deal to get out. It is likely that Barrett knew of Mans field's habit of going through the alloy, and partly for revenge and partly for rob bery. laid in wait for him. When arraigned, and Mansfield said ho had recognized Barrett, the latter said: "If I had known tliut I would have killed you." This is good evidence of his guilt, and in view of the earnest* ness with which it was said, Manstleld made another formal complaint, and Squire Davis added to the bond of $2,000 required in tho robbery case auothor of $1,000 to keep tho peace for ono year.
