The suit for $5,000 damages brought by Henrietta l'etlit against William Ulon, was on trial all day yesterday in I'art I of the Circuit Court, and attracted con siderable attention. In Police Court yesterday morning Thomas Collina-was fined $5 and costs for bohaving in a disorderly manner in the Bocond ward. About 3 o'clock yes terday morning ho, in company with somo other man, who is at present un known to the police, attempted to halter down the door of one of tbo dives of ill repnte in the Tenth street district. They mado enough nolso to rouse the neigh borhood and attracted quite a crowd of men, who were going to and from their work at that hour, but not one of the policemen in that precinct put in an ap pearance, although repeatedly callqd by tho blowing of a pollco whistle in tbo possession of ono of the crowd attracted by tho fracas. Tho whistle was finally blown from the Suspension bridge, and two of the Island officers promptly re sponded and took Collins in; bis com panion took alarm In time to escape. John McNamara, who liashoen wanted since April 20 last for wife'beating, and who was not arrested till Monday, would have been let oil by the tender-hearted Mayor with a fine of $1 and costs, bad not the other ofllcora of the court pro tested and called His Honor down by polntingout to him that a fino of $6 and costs was tho lowest that could bo im posed in a case-of this nature. Elwood Hughes, Secretary Lynch announced the plana laid out for the autumn and winter. There ia to be a course of seven entertainments, con sisting of lectures, instructive and amus ing, and musical concerts of a high or der, These entertainmenta will be free to full paid members. The course will be quite an expensive one, but it is expect ed that Ibis will be met by the sale of tickets to friends ol the Association who will be anxious to attend the lecture? and concerts. Monthly entertainments will be pro vided for the members and their IaJy friends as heretofore. A course of practi cal talks by business and professional men of Wheeling has also been arranged, almilar to those of previous years, which have proved so pleasant and profitable. These talka will be free to all young men, whether members of the Associa tion or not. The educational work about to be In stituted is a new feature. Classes have been arranged for Instruction in phono graphy, German, bookkeeping, penman shin and arithmetic. A literary society will be organised. Regular instruction in the gymnasium will be given on two evenings of the week and on Saturday afternoon. The religious work of the Association will bs vigorous and earnest. There will be a Bible training clsss, prayer meetings, and evangelistic meet ings weekly, also a Sunday school teaoh era meeting every Friday afternoon in charge of Hev. L, \V. Barr. After the announcements ofBecretary Lynch, encouraging and stimulating re marks were made by Itev. Dr. Gushing and Bev. Dr. Cooke. The remainder of the evening was spent in social inter course.
