Iris reported from Washington that tho friends of Commissioner of Internal Itsvenuo John \V. The President could make no appointment that would be more popular. It would not only bo the selection of a wise and competent judge, but would be very gratifying to the people of West Virginia, regurdlcss of party, who hold Mr. Mason in high estoem. < The appointment of Senator N. 13. Coat of Now*. I Few daily newspaper readers have any idea of the amount of money it costs i the publishers of the United States to i lurniBh them with the news every morn 1 ing. Eugene M. Camp, in an interesting i article in the Century, givessorno figures ' "which show the average cost per year to I the newspapers for threo classes of news, j Ho estimates that tlio total amount ex- i pended cach year in the United States j for telegraphic and local news is $10,570,- ' 000 00. Of this EUin $12,500,000 00 is for local news, $2,850,000 00 for special tele- I grams and $1,820,000 00 for press dis- ( patches. This immense cost is borne \ solely by tho daily papers, the cost of ^ tlio country preas not being included in i tho estimate, and when tho salaries of g the army of men required to haudlo this j news, tho expenses of putting it into type, tho item of blank paper, tho cost I of press work, &c., are all added, tho t reader may arrive at a faint idea that the i eost of conducting a daily newspaper is not insignificant, and that tho publishing business is not tho least important of \ American enterprises. ? ? , Summer Storms. t Tho perils of summer storms is a [ fruitful topic for discussion aB well as a ( 1 seasonable one. Country buildings ofteu bristle with j lightning-rods which aro not only no protection to the building,'" but which c increase tho danger of injury or destruc* j tion from lightuiug. Tho peripatetic lightning-rod vender, as a rulo, is a ^ scourge to tho community in which lie operates, lie uses cheap and imperfect j conductors, useless points and attaches tho rods in a manner that makes thorn incapable of conducting a chargo of electricity. L'ho plain truth about Mr. Wilson is that tinco ho has been in Congress ho has mcceeded in w iping out a Democratic Majority of more than thirty-llvo bunked. When ho started in tho Second district ivus good for a Democratic majority of roni three to four thousand; at tho last taction It was only 01, aud only once in Mr. Wilson's career in Congress has the nnjoiity approximated half what it was jeforu ho became "ono of tho great tarilT reform leaders." Let us exumino the ligures, beginning as far back as 1874, nrlien tho Democracy of West Virginia tvaa in tho heighth of its glory: In 1871 the district, as above intimatid, was between three and four thousand Democratic tho lato Charles J. Faulkuer, sr., carrying it that year by a majority of 3,130. Two years later 11. F. Martin (Democrat) was electod by a majority of 3,873. In 1878 Mr. Martin was re-elected over Col. Frank Eurr, the Republican candidate, aud Mr. Thompson (Greenbacker) by a majority of 3,098. In 1880 Judge Uoge, at present District Attorney for the District of Columbia, waa elected on tho Democratic ticket by a plurality of 2,081. Up to this time the Democratic majority waa not only largo and substantial but was reasonably safe and sure. But about this time tho career of tho "popular Second district Congressman" began, and hero it is: In 1S82 there was a split in the Democratic ranks and Mr. AVilson, whose record, according to Democratic papers, is "endorsed by his constituents," was selected as a cotnpromiso candidate. Tho feeling was very bad between the factions, and Mr. "Wilson's maj->?iiy"over lion. John W. Mason was only ten votes oa tho face of the returns, but Mr. Mason and Air. Kitchen (Greenbacker) together had 010 more votes than Mr. Wilson, so that tho latter really lacked G4G more votes of carrying tho district. Mr. Wilson was renominated in 1SS-1. It was a Presidential year, and tho result of the October election discouraged tho liepulicans so that they made practically no light for Congressmen and electors. Notwithstanding this, Mr. Wilson's majority over Hon. F. M.Reynolds wasonly 1,529, less than half of the largest majority polled by any of his predecessors. In 1SS0 the licpublicans made an aggressive fight on tarill lines, with lion. W. H. II. Flick as their candidate. This time Mr. Wilson got but 90 plurali ty over Judge Flick, but Flick and Siler (Prohibitionist) together got 01 more votes than Wilson, and tho latter again failed to obtain a majority of the votes )f his district. By this time matters were growing close enough to become nteresting, and, despite Mr. Wilson's 'great popularity," tho Reppublicans nad hopes. In 1SSS Mr. Wilson's plurality over Judgo Flick was 378, and his majority over all was but 92, and in a presidential year, too, when a full vote tvas out and party lines were drawn. So itEeems'that West Virginia's great Freo Trade leader has not been bo corlially endorsed as Democratic papers vould have ua believe. The ligures ;iven above are anything but an argunent in favor of the idea that Mr. Wilon's course in Congress has had the apiroval of tho people of his district. In commenting upon theso facts and Mr. Wilson's lato interview regarding he probability that Mr. Elkins would un against him next fall, the Fairmont Virginian recently said: Tho man who hassuccecdcd in eight yours in , cduclus the Democratic majority in his din- ' riot from 2,000 to nothing should not be couriered n very lormldable antagonist for any- . tody to defeat. It is fair to Mr. Wilson to say, io\*ever, that his unpopularity in ills party Is lot on aecouutof any personal objections, but lecaUMi ho is not politically in sympathy with he people of his district. a very lur^e majority >i thepeup:e of the .Second Congressional disrlct are protectionists. Without protection ;ii? uuurici would uo bankrupt in sixty iJujjs it 1h because Mr. w ilsou is ill heart a free trader, itid has voted for every free trade project tliut ins been brought before Congress since he Ins aeeu a member vi the House, that lie has twice ost his district, and has been elected each time jy a very slim margin. Mr. Wilson lias always ulsrepreiuntcd his district In that which a fleets ,ts jjreatCht material Interest, and we do not betevohowlll bu permitted to do it again, no 1 natter who may bo a candidate Against him. 1 What is the Matter? ' What lias become of the Democratic hroat to carry to the Supremo Court tho 1 pieation ol Speaker -Reed's right to louut a quorum ? Is it possible that the )emocratic side has been advised by its ittorneys not to "monkey "with that mzz-saw?"
